AMMAN — Ayla Oasis in Aqaba has emerged as a leading destination for birdwatching and biodiversity conservation, with a recent survey revealing the presence of 106 bird species recorded in the area in 2024.
Conducted by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) through the Aqaba Bird Observatory, the survey underscores Ayla's growing significance as a hub for sustainable ecotourism and wildlife conservation in Jordan, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra.
Over the past decade, Ayla Oasis has recorded a total of 134 bird species, representing 31 per cent of all bird species documented in Jordan.
The survey also highlighted the area's strategic location as a vital stopover for migratory birds, with 73 species observed during the spring migration and 92 species recorded in the autumn.
These findings reflect the area's rich and diverse environment, which provides a safe haven for both migratory and resident birds.
The survey revealed that Ayla's diverse habitats play a crucial role in supporting birdlife. It found that 46 per cent of the species were spotted in green areas and golf courses, 43 per cent in artificial lakes, and 11 per cent in desert regions.
Of the species recorded, 71 per cent were migratory, while 29 per cent were resident.
The survey also identified several globally threatened species, including the lesser white-fronted goose, ferruginous duck, spur-winged lapwing, and stone curlew.
CEO of Ayla Oasis Development Company Sahl Dudin stressed the oasis's critical role in advancing biodiversity conservation.
"Ayla has become a vital habitat for numerous bird species, positioning the project as a model for sustainable development and further solidifying its reputation as a leader in eco-tourism," Dudin said.
He also highlighted the longstanding partnership between Ayla Oasis and the RSCN, which has flourished over the past decade.
This cooperation led to the creation of the "Ayla Feather Trail," a bird-watching trail that has become an integral part of Jordan's ecotourism offerings.
It serves as a successful example of cooperation between Ayla Oasis and national institutions dedicated to sustainability and conservation, he added.
Director of the Aqaba Bird Observatory Firas Rahahleh underscored the significance of the "Ayla Feather Trail," the first bird-watching trail developed within a private project in Jordan.
"The trail highlights the environmental value of the project while providing visitors with a unique and enriching experience," Rahahleh said.

Azraq Entrepreneurial Ideas Competition launched in Azraq Amman- Leaders International Foundation for Economic Development partnered with the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature to launch the "Azraq Entrepreneurial Ideas Competition" under the "Nature Work" project. اضافة اعلان In a statement issued Sunday, the Foundation said the competition aims to support innovation and empower local entrepreneurs in Azraq, connecting them to the "Shumari Wildlife Reserve" and "Al-Dahek Nature Reserve." The initiative provides financial support and capacity-building opportunities to help develop innovative projects within the tourism sector, the statement reads. Over two days, 20 participants out of 41 applicants presented their ideas to a jury composed of representatives from the Leaders Foundation, the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature, Azraq District, the New Azraq Municipality and a technical expert. The jury selected 10 finalists to receive comprehensive support to develop and implement their projects. The proposed projects focused on ecotourism, cultural tourism and wellness tourism, aiming to promote biodiversity, support sustainable economic growth and empower women and youth. Ideas included activities such as yoga and meditation sessions in the tranquil Azraq desert, stargazing experiences, camel trails and initiatives celebrating Bedouin, Druze, and Chechen traditions through food, arts and cultural performances. The competition seeks to achieve meaningful outcomes, including strengthening local communities, promoting sustainable tourism practices and enhancing local capacities by equipping participants with the tools to improve Azraq's tourism sector and integrate it into the regional tourism network. Leaders Foundation Project Manager of the "Nature Work" project Nadine Salameh said the organisation is committed to fostering alternative and sustainable tourism in Jordan. She highlighted the Azraq region's potential for developing eco-friendly tourism that drives economic growth while preserving its natural and cultural heritage. Project Manager at the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature Hazem Harisha said the "Nature Work" project showcases the power of community initiatives in promoting sustainable tourism and preserving biodiversity. Harisha praised the support for projects that empower youth and women and acknowledged the innovative ideas contributing to sustainable tourism in nature reserves. Ayla's Chef Completes Historic Swim Along Aqaba Coastline - Jordan News
Thomas Brosnan, Executive Chef at Ayla, swam the entire Jordanian coast of the Red Sea in a groundbreaking initiative aimed at promoting Aqaba as a leading tourist destination and raising awareness about the importance of preserving natural resources, biodiversity, and coral reefs. اضافة اعلان On Wednesday, November 6, 2024, Brosnan swam approximately 27 kilometers along the shores of Aqaba, completing the journey in nine hours. He was accompanied in relay by a select group of elite athletes from the Jordanian Finswimming National Team, who supported him throughout the challenge. The event, launched in the early morning under the patronage of Ramzi Al-Kabariti, Commissioner of Youth and Entrepreneurship at the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, began at Ayla's lagoons and concluded at the Jordan-Saudi border, marking the first time anyone has undertaken such a feat in Aqaba. Sahl Dudin, Managing Director of Ayla Oasis Development Company, expressed pride in the accomplishment, noting that it highlights the importance of preserving Aqaba's stunning natural environment and resources, while also supporting efforts to promote the city's unique tourist destinations. Ramzi Al-Kabariti emphasized the importance of such distinctive initiatives for raising awareness on natural resource preservation, particularly Aqaba's coral reefs, and promoting both tourism and sports in a way that benefits the local community. Mohammad Abdel-Maghribi, President of the Royal Jordanian Marine Sports Federation, praised the initiative as an inspiring event for athletes, underscoring Aqaba's potential as a marine sports hub and the opportunity to utilize its facilities in support of national tourism efforts. Reflecting on his accomplishment, Brosnan expressed gratitude and joy, saying: 'I've always had a strong connection to the sea. Growing up on the Irish coast, the water has been a huge part of my life. Now, at 50, I'm pushing my limits again. But this swim is more than an endurance challenge; it's about promoting Aqaba and the Red Sea as a premier marine destination and raising awareness about the need to protect coral reefs and beautiful marine life.'
