Zamalek appoint Belgian Yannick Ferrera as new coach - Egyptian Football
The 44-year-old Ferrera arrived in Cairo late on Thursday to finalize the deal and begin preparations for the upcoming Egyptian Premier League season, which kicks off on 8 August.
Ferrera, who has previously managed Standard Liege and Sint-Truiden in Belgium, brings valuable experience to the Cairo-based club.
He won the Belgian Cup with Standard Liege in 2015-16 and led Sint-Truiden to promotion by claiming the Belgian Second Division title in 2014.
Managerial career highlights
His coaching career began in 2004 with Anderlecht's youth team, where he worked alongside future stars Romelu Lukaku and Adnan Januzaj.
He later served as assistant coach to Michel Preud'homme at AA Gent and followed him to Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab.
Ferrera took charge of Sint-Truiden in 2013, guiding them to top-flight promotion.
He then managed Standard Liege starting in September 2015.
More recently, he gained experience in the Saudi Professional League, leading Al-Fateh in 2019 and Al-Riyadh in 2023.
In 2024, he joined Belgian side RWD Molenbeek in a relegation battle, but the club was ultimately demoted.
Zamalek's search for a new coach
Zamalek have been searching for a permanent coach since the departure of Portuguese manager José Peseiro last season.
Peseiro was hired in February to replace Swiss coach Christian Gross, becoming the club's third coach that season.
Under interim coach Ayman El-Ramady, Zamalek won the Egypt Cup but finished third in the Egyptian Premier League with 47 points, eleven behind champions Ahly.
They have qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup for the upcoming season.
The Egyptian Premier League is scheduled to run from 8 August through late May next year.

Both Luis Enrique's PSG and Kompany's Bayern, champions of the French and German leagues respectively, like to dominate the ball, press high and play attacking football. "You have teams who are able to make a lot of good use of the ball in nearly every game, against deep blocks, high presses, everything," Kompany told a news conference Friday. "That creates a sort of, what we've seen here a lot, thunderstorm, right? It's a perfect storm. These games are always interesting, and... I would pay to watch it." Bayern and PSG can rest easy on Saturday because of the roof at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta which means there will be no storm disruption, and Kompany said the match would be one to savour. "If I was a neutral, I would come to see this game, for sure," he said. "Both teams have quite 'extreme' principles, which is why it's usually an interesting game." Despite the obvious strength of the Champions League winners, Kompany said there was no side he would rather face than the Parisians. "There's no reason to think that they're not going to be absolutely at their best tomorrow, but I think it's the type of challenge you like," he explained. "If I could pick one team to face, as a professional athlete, as a competitor, it's always the winners, and they are the winners, so we get a chance to play against them. "It's tough, it's the toughest game, maybe, but that's why we're here, so I wouldn't have it any other way." 'Completely over the top' The Belgian coach also hailed his PSG counterpart Luis Enrique, who won the treble with the French side. In November PSG lost 1-0 against Bayern but Kompany said criticism of the Spaniard at the time was greatly overblown. "I could follow (his press conference) on one of the big screens and all the questions that were asked to him were completely over the top," said Kompany. "Really tough questions, big statements, everything is over, you failed in your job, you can do nothing -- all these big statements. "But I remember watching his team before we played them, most games they should have won 5-0 but somehow it was 1-1 or they lost, so it wasn't reflective of the spirit of the team... (or) of the dominance they had in every game." Kompany said he was happy to see Luis Enrique's determination rewarded. "It's nice to see that in those moments consistency paid off for him, but most importantly that he was strong enough to continue," said the coach. "It's not a compliment I'm giving, it's just a fact... it's just interesting to do this (rematch) six months fast forward, and to see how much things can change." Athletics: US sprinter Richardson seeks to kickstart season after February injury - Omni sports
Sha'Carri Richardson is looking to ignite her World Championships season at the Eugene Diamond League meeting on Saturday, revealing an injury in February set back her 2025 campaign. "I was injured this year in February, that completely set me back for the season -- my start of the season and just how I would normally execute," the 25-year-old US sprint star said at a pre-meet press conference on Friday. Richardson didn't elaborate on the nature of the injury, but she has raced just one 100m this season, posting a lackluster 11.47sec at Tokyo in May. The reigning 100m world champion says the most important thing now is to get races under her belt and stay healthy as she looks toward her title defence in Tokyo. "My biggest thing is having a healthy race (Saturday)," she said. "With a healthy race, me being confident in me, just knowing what I know and being capable of doing, I know that I will produce what it is that I want." Richardson called it a "blessing in disguise" that the World Championships date of September 13-21 stretches the season out. Also, as the reigning title holder, she has a bye in the 100m, but she said she "definitely plans" to bid for a 200m place at the US trials in Eugene later this month. "The only thing that matters is world championships," she said. On Saturday, Richardson will be facing an elite field in the 100m led by Saint Lucia's Julien Alfred, who beat Richardson for Paris Olympics gold last year. Paris bronze medallist Melissa Jefferson-Wooden -- who clocked a world-leading 10.73sec at a Grand Slam Track meeting in June -- is also entered. Alfred, a convincing winner in Stockholm three weeks ago in 10.75, said she's hoping to build on that performance -- which surprised her at the time. "The day before, I had a mental breakdown because my coach and I had been working on a few things," she confided. "I was a bit hard on myself going into the race, but the time really shocked me just on my execution."
