Govt prepares blueprint to construct 100 footbridges annually

Time of India30-05-2025
Chikkamagaluru: The govt has prepared a blueprint to construct 100 footbridges annually in the state. Work has begun to construct 20 of these with a grant of Rs 20 crore, according to Public Works minister Satish Jarkiholi.
A grant of Rs 1 crore was earlier allocated to construct footbridges in the 36 assembly segments in the state, the minister told reporters in Halase village of Mudigere taluk on Friday.
Surveys are currently on to assess the extent of damage to roads, bridges, crops, and other properties and infrastructure due to pre-monsoon rains in the Malnad region. Relief efforts will be initiated as soon as the survey report is in, he said.
Chief minister Siddaramaiah will hold a meeting with all deputy commissioners and zilla panchayat CEOs to discuss rain damage and initiate necessary action. Since 2019, this region has suffered damages to its infrastructure due to heavy rain. Some areas have also experienced landslides.
Most of the damage has been rectified, with bridge construction underway in some places, the minister said.
The 40 km road between Mudigere and Sakleshpur was damaged due to rain.

An action plan will be prepared for its repair. Necessary funding will also be provided.
In 2014, construction of 40 bridges in various parts of the state were approved. Out of these, 20 have been completed, while work is in progress on the rest. Among those is the bridge on Hemavati river, at Bettadmane village, work on which is stuck for the last 11 years owing to technical bottlenecks.
Meanwhile, in view of increased human-animal run-ins, a fencing will be erected over a 100 km stretch around forested land in the region.
Barricade construction is already underway in Gundlupete, Hassan, and other places.
A blueprint was prepared for the construction of barricades in forested areas – particularly those inhabited by wild elephants. An elephant corridor will be created, providing food and water to the jumbos, the minister said.
Hassan MP Shreyas Patel, MLAs T D Rajegowda, H D Thammaiah, Nayana Motamma, former minister B B Ningaiah, and superintendent of police Vikram Amte were present.

Who is Rajesh Sakariya, the man from Rajkot who attacked Delhi CM Rekha Gupta? Why he did it and what happened

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was attacked by a man during her weekly Jan Sunwai (public hearing) at her official residence in Civil Lines on Wednesday morning, police said. The incident has caused shock across the capital, raising questions about security arrangements during public interactions with the Chief Minister. Initial reports suggested that Gupta had been slapped, but Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva later clarified that the man tried to pull her by the hand during the hearing, leading to a scuffle. He added that the Chief Minister may have suffered a light head injury during the incident but was stable. Who Was the Attacker? According to preliminary interrogation reported by multiple TV channels, the attacker has been identified as Rajesh Bhai Khimji Bhai Sakariya, a resident of Rajkot, Gujarat. Police said he remains in custody and will face further questioning to determine his exact motive. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like A Tree Blocked This Garage for Years - See What's Inside! Tips and Tricks Undo Media reports suggest that one of Sakariya's relatives is currently in jail and that he had come to the hearing with a petition seeking their release, a matter still pending before the courts. Delhi Police have contacted Gujarat Police to verify his name, address, and background. — ANI (@ANI) How the Incident Happened According to officials cited in media reports, the man, believed to be in his mid-30s to early 40s, first handed some papers to the Chief Minister before suddenly shouting and attacking her. Eyewitness accounts vary, with some claiming he pulled her hand and others alleging he struck her. Live Events Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar told the media that while the man's political affiliations were not confirmed, his remarks before the assault suggested frustration with a political party's position in Delhi. Virendra Sachdeva explained the sequence of events, saying: 'The attacker tried to pull the Chief Minister by the hand during the hearing, leading to a scuffle in which her head may have hit a corner. Doctors have confirmed she is stable but in shock. She is a strong woman with a clear commitment to Delhi and remains determined to continue her work.' Sachdeva dismissed speculation about stone-throwing or slapping, calling such claims 'incorrect and exaggerated.' Political Condemnations The attack has triggered sharp political reactions across parties. Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa described it as a 'political conspiracy by rivals,' claiming: 'She worries for Delhi day and night. They cannot tolerate that a CM remains amid the public for hours. So, there seems to be a conspiracy behind this. Delhi Police is investigating, and all facts will come out.' Another Delhi Minister, Kapil Mishra, called the incident an 'unforgivable crime.' He said: 'A woman, a daughter, who is dedicated day and night to the service of Delhi – those who attack her and those who orchestrate it are both cowards and criminals.' From the Opposition, Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav said the incident exposed larger questions of women's safety: 'If the CM of Delhi is not safe, how can a common man or woman be safe?' Former Delhi CM and AAP leader Atishi also condemned the assault, saying: 'Democracy allows space for disagreement and protest, but there is no place for violence. I hope Delhi Police takes the strictest action against the culprit.' 'The attack on Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is highly condemnable. In a democratic system, differences of opinion and opposition are acceptable, but there can be no place for violence. I am confident that the Delhi Police will take appropriate action. I hope the Chief Minister remains completely safe and healthy,' said former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal. Police Action and Security Review Police confirmed that the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) reached the CM's residence soon after the incident. An inquiry is underway, and additional security has been deployed around the Civil Lines residence. Officials described the incident as a 'serious lapse in security' and said protocols for Jan Sunwai events will now be reviewed. Doctors have confirmed that Chief Minister Gupta is stable but recovering from shock. Despite the attack, Sachdeva said she has resolved not to cancel her daily schedule or her weekly Jan Sunwai programmes. The investigation into Rajesh Sakariya's background and motive is ongoing, with further details expected once police complete their questioning. Inputs from agencies

Government bringing bills to 'topple' state governments, TMC alleges

Trinamool Congress MPs on Wednesday accused the government of bringing new bills to allow the CBI and ED to "directly topple" state governments . The remarks came as the government is planning to introduce three bills in Parliament on Wednesday for the removal of a Prime Minister, a Union Minister, a Chief Minister or a Minister of a State or Union Territory when arrested or detained on serious criminal charges for 30 days in a row. If any one of them is arrested and detained in custody for consecutive 30 days for offences that attract a jail term of at least five years, they will lose their job on the 31st day. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Tiger reunites with the zookeeper after 5 years. Story To Hear Undo These bills are the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill 2025; the Constitution (One Hundred And Thirtieth Amendment) Bill 2025; and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025. Flaying the bills, TMC Rajya Sabha MP Saket Gokhale charged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are looking for "new tricks" to topple state governments. Live Events In a post on X, Gokhale charged, "When vote-chori is exposed, Modi-Shah looking for new tricks. New Bill being brought today to allow CBI-ED to directly topple state govts for the BJP". "A person is a criminal only when convicted by a court of law. Until then, they're an "accused". You can't remove a CM/Minister on mere accusation. Arrest by Modi-Shah's Central Agencies is not proof of guilt," he said. "Interesting fact: In the last 11 years, zero arrests of any Union/State ministers of BJP. All arrests only of Opposition leaders," he added. TMC Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra said the bill bypasses both federal structure and judiciary. "Opposition predictions come true- Constitution being changed by BJP with only 240 MPs. New bill bypasses both federal structure & judiciary - Union govt can use ED CBI to arrest elected opposition CM on fake charges and sack them without proven guilty by a court," she said in a post on X. In a post on X late on Tuesday night, TMC Rajya Sabha Leader Derek O'Brien said, "In the dead of night, more stunts from the shaky 239 seat Modi coalition as they look for more ways to mock and disrupt parliament". Union Home Minister Amit Shah will also move a motion in the Lok Sabha to refer these three bills to a Joint Committee of Parliament.
