Bursa Malaysia opens slightly lower

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia opened slightly lower today due to mild profit taking in selected heavyweights after recent gains, amid weaker sentiments on the global economic outlook, a dealer said.
At 9.10am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) slipped 1.16 points to 1,589.08 from yesterday's close of 1,590.24.
The benchmark index opened 2.21 points lower at 1,588.03.
Market breadth was negative with decliners leading advancers 166 to 145, while 264 counters were unchanged, 2,019 untraded and 16 suspended.
Turnover stood at 123.43 million shares worth RM75.37 million.
In a note, Malacca Securities Sdn Bhd expects the FBMKLCI to trade in a lacklustre tone today, tracking Wall Street's weaker overnight performance.
"However, buying interest might emerge in domestic-driven consumer-related counters, such as 99SMART and MRDIY, which are expected to benefit from government cash aid and handouts," it said in a note.
The brokerage firm said the Wall Street closed mostly lower as investors shifted out of significantly overstretched large-cap tech stocks and moved into small caps and value stocks ahead of the Jackson Hole meeting this Friday.
"Traders' focus this week will be on Jerome Powell's speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium, where the market is speculating the United States Federal Reserve to adopt a more dovish tone and potential rate cut in September, with the probability currently at 86.1 per cent," it said.
Among heavyweights, Maybank was 3.0 sen higher at RM9.83 and IHH Healthcare added 2.0 sen to RM6.87, while Public Bank slipped 1.0 sen to RM4.45, and both Tenaga Nasional and CIMB fell 2.0 sen each to RM13.70 and RM7.37, respectively.
On the actively traded list, Vantris Energy eased half-a-sen to 3.5 sen, Pestec and Magma trimmed 1.0 sen each to 11.5 sen and 37 sen, respectively, while Tanco was flat at 73 sen.
On the broader market, the FBM Emas Index shed 9.48 points to 11,802.93, the FBMT 100 Index declined 9.93 points to 11,587.72, the FBM Emas Shariah Index gave up 13.14 points to 11,718.26, and the FBM Mid 70 Index went down 20.95 points to 16,689.02, while the FBM ACE Index earned 0.05 of a point to 4,709.74.
By sector, the Financial Services Index reduced 11.09 points to 18,174.41, the Plantation Index improved 3.59 points to 7,550.07, the Energy Index edged down 0.44 of a point to 749.78, and the Industrial Products and Services Index eased 0.12 of a point to 159.

FBM KLCI traders take to the sidelines in lead up to corporate earnings, Fed summit

KUALA LUMPUR: The FBM KLCI shed some weight as investors pressed pause on a rally following Wall Street's overnight decline in the lead up to a Federal Reserve summit this week. At 12.30pm, the benchmark index was down five points to 1,585.24, erasing the previous day's gains as investors turned to a wait-and-see approach. The caution on the market was demonstrated by a pullback in all 13 trading sectors, with declining issues dwarfing advancing by a ratio of 2.2-to-1. Trading volume was 1.42 billion shares changing hands for RM1.03bil. Observers are holding their breath for more evidence the Fed was poised to deliver an interest rate cut at next month's policy meeting, which would add fuel to the stock rally. Casting some light on the matter, Fed chair Jerome Powell is expected to make some comments at the Jackson Hole symposium over the next few days. On Bursa Malaysia, there is also growing anticipation over the raft of corporate results that are due to be released this week and next. Stocks on the backfoot included energy and plantation-related plays; PETRONAS Dagangan fell 34 sen to RM22.60, Kuala Lumpur Kepong shed 34 sen to RM19.28 and Gas Malaysia slid 14 sen to RM4.32. Of actives, Vantris Energy dropped 0.5 sen to 3.5 sen, Zetrix slid two sen to RM84.5 sen and Tanco was flat at 73 sen.

US dollar strengthens ahead of Jackson Hole meet

The US dollar index added 0.1% to 98.438, its highest since Aug 12. (Reuters pic) TOKYO : The US dollar gained for a third straight session today as traders awaited the Federal Reserve's annual Jackson Hole symposium this week for clues on the path of monetary policy. The New Zealand dollar tumbled after the Reserve Bank said its board also considered a half-point cut in deciding to reduce the cash rate by a quarter point. The kiwi slumped as much as 0.9% to US$0.5841, its lowest since April 14. The US dollar index, which measures the currency against six major counterparts, added 0.1% to 98.438, its highest since Aug 12. In the first two days of this week, it gained about 0.4%. Friday's speech by Fed chair Jerome Powell is the market's main focus, as traders watch for any pushback against market pricing of a rate reduction next month. Traders now place odds of 84% on such a cut, and expect about 54 basis points of reduction by year-end. 'Given the relatively high bar for Powell to meet, there's a bit of risk being baked into the markets that he leans to the hawkish side and the proverbial rug gets pulled from beneath investors,' said Kyle Rodda, an analyst at Traders, who ramped up bets for a Fed cut on Sept 17 after a surprisingly weak payrolls report at the start of this month, were further encouraged after consumer price data showed limited upward pressure from tariffs. However, a hotter-than-expected producer price reading last week complicated the policy picture. Powell has said he is reluctant to cut rates because of expected tariff-driven price pressures this summer. Later today, the Fed will issue the minutes of its meeting on July 29 and 30, when it held rates steady, although they may offer limited insight as the meeting came before the weak jobs numbers. The US dollar advanced 0.1% to CHF0.80885, though it edged slightly lower to Japanese yen at ¥147.56. The euro eased 0.2% to US$1.1626, and sterling slipped 0.2% to US$1.3463. Australia's dollar declined 0.3% to US$0.6435, its weakest since Aug 1.
