
The US is right to warn Britain about its free speech record
Unsurprisingly, the State Department was unhappy about the Online Safety Act's long-arm provisions affecting US websites, our abortion protest laws and our strict contempt rules (which last year forced the New Yorker to take the drastic step of geoblocking an important and informative article about the Lucy Letby case). It was particularly caustic about the fallout from Southport, where it did not mince its words. It stated, citing widespread arrests and prosecutions for online comments, that 'censorship of ordinary Britons was increasingly routine, often targeted at political speech'. Ouch.
Admittedly this appraisal bears strong marks of a Trump administration finger discreetly placed on the scale. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has long seen State Department bureaucracy as too woke and progressive in its approach to human rights abroad: reportedly the order has gone out to backpedal equality and diversity issues and emphasise traditional freedoms instead. Furthermore, the Trump government's own free speech record at home is far from spotless: witness its fairly heavy-handed attempts to browbeat universities, broadcasters and others to toe its line.
Nevertheless, this is something we'd be very foolish to ignore. The first point is that, biased or not, the State Department is correct. Britain, or at least the establishment in charge of it, shows worrying signs of seeing free speech as a distraction to be sidelined rather than a value to be pursued. True, the whirlwind state descent on social media following Southport, and the stern warnings from police and others to avoid controversial comment, may not have been secretly ordered from Downing Street in the manner of some Central American dictatorship. But an unprecedented and vicious clampdown it still was, even if it reflected no more than tacit agreement among the great, the good and the courts that something drastic had to be done to stop people speaking out of turn.
There were plenty of other things that could have been highlighted in the report, and which would have been an entirely fair cop. Even if the total suppression by injunction of discussion over the Afghan refugee crisis came too late, there were always the 30-plus people a day arrested for social media posts, regular police interventions to silence speakers who might cause offence, and so on.
Secondly, it's important that we should take note of how others see us. The slow but steady erosion since about 1990 of our right to speak our mind without state interference has passed many by in the UK who are not free speech enthusiasts. And not entirely surprisingly: gradual political change often presents itself as a fait accompli to a population when it is too late to do much about it.
But all this has not escaped foreigners. We should be worried that this country, once seen as a beacon of free speech in an increasingly authoritarian Europe, should now be seen as a serious backslider. Particularly so where this is by the US, a country which retains an instinctive affection for us arising out of shared history and culture. No doubt Uncle Sam would, in its own interests, like to discreetly detach us diplomatically from Europe; nevertheless, we ignore this at our peril.
Thirdly, all this should remind us that it is in our interest to keep the free speech issue from hurting our international reputation further. At the moment we are not doing this. We do not endear ourselves to an increasingly online world community when we place large swathes of the internet off-limits to those without VPNs as a result of the Online Safety Act. The government's stern orders earlier this week to websites to preserve online free speech or else will deceive no one and will be seen as the reputation management measure it is.
Still less will we win friends when Ofcom, a UK government agency, writes threatening letters on official notepaper to US websites with no connection with the UK at all such as 4Chan, gab.ai and Kiwifarms. Earlier this year it did just this, demanding promises to comply with UK law and to fill in all sorts of Ofcom paperwork, and menacing them with enormous fines if they did not. (They politely told it to go fish, but by then the damage was done.)
Every instinct of this government will be to face down the State Department and carry on referring to keeping the UK internet safe. But it would do well to bear in mind that foreigners can sometimes be right and that taking steps to keep them onside, even at the cost of a little pride, can reap big dividends. This is one such occasion.

In a joint briefing in Berlin with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Zelensky said: "I told the US president and all our European colleagues that Putin is bluffing. He is trying to apply pressure before the meeting in Alaska along all parts of the Ukrainian front. Russia is trying to show that it can occupy all of Ukraine." After the talks, Zelensky said Trump supports providing security guarantees for Ukraine if there is a peace agreement. He said: "There should be security guarantees. President Trump said that he supports this and about America's readiness to take part." The Ukrainian President said he hoped the primary focus of the Alaska talks would be an immediate ceasefire, with any discussions on territorial issues to be addressed at a meeting involving all three leaders. Trump warned there will be "very severe consequences" if Putin refuses to stop the killing. When pushed on what these consequences would be, he said: "I don't have to say." Ukraine war briefing: Germany to fund $500m in arms for Kyiv as Zelenskyy says Putin ‘bluffing' about peace
Germany plans to fund a $500m package of military equipment and munitions for Ukraine sourced from the US, Nato said on Wednesday. Alliance chief Mark Rutte commended Germany for the decision, saying: 'This delivery will help Ukraine defend itself against Russian aggression.' Germany's foreign and defence ministries said the support was focused on equipment such as 'critical air defence capabilities' against Russian airstrikes that were 'killing more and more civilians throughout Ukraine'. The Netherlands and Sweden have also pledged major contributions. Germany's move came as Donald Trump said there would be 'very severe consequences' if Vladimir Putin did not agree to stop his war in Ukraine after the summit between the US and Russian presidents in Alaska this Friday. The US president's comment came after a virtual meeting with European leaders including Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who told the group that Putin 'is bluffing' about seeking peace. 'He is trying to apply pressure before the meeting in Alaska along all parts of the Ukrainian front,' Zelenskyy said, amid a sharp thrust from Russian forces into eastern Ukraine in recent days. 'Russia is trying to show that it can occupy all of Ukraine,' he said. German chancellor Friedrich Merz said the leaders had a 'constructive and good' discussion with Trump. Keir Starmer is to welcome Zelenskyy to London on Thursday, the British prime minister's office has said. On Wednesday, the prime minister said there was now a 'viable' chance for a Ukraine ceasefire, and that Ukraine's military backers – the so-called coalition of the willing – had drawn up workable military plans in case of a ceasefire, but were also ready to add pressure on Russia through sanctions. 'For three and a bit years this conflict has been going, we haven't got anywhere near ... a viable way of bringing it to a ceasefire,' Starmer told the European meeting. 'Now we do have that chance, because of the work that the [US] president has put in.' Trump suggested he would push for a second summit if his meeting with Putin went well – this time including Zelenskyy, reports Patrick Wintour. 'If the first one goes OK, we'll have a quick second one,' Trump told reporters in Washington. 'I would like to do it almost immediately, and we'll have a quick second meeting between President Putin and President Zelenskyy and myself, if they'd like to have me there.' Trump's remarks followed what he described as a very good call with the European leaders in which he consulted about the goal and strategy for his summit. He pleased Europe's leadership by giving reassurances that a ceasefire was his priority and he would not make any territorial concessions without Kyiv's full involvement. Russia wants to include the topic of a reduction in Nato troops' presence in any conversations about the future of Ukraine, the Polish prime minister said. Donald Tusk told reporters on Wednesday: 'That is why it is so important that we build such a strong and united group of states, both in relation to Russia but also in relation to other allies, like the United States.' Fallen debris from Ukrainian drones caused a fire at an oil refinery in the Russian city of Volgograd, the governor said on Thursday. 'Firefighters quickly began extinguishing the fire,' Andrey Bocharov, the governor, said on Telegram. 'According to preliminary data, there were no casualties.' Russia's defence ministry said air defence systems had intercepted and destroyed 44 Ukrainian drones overnight, including nine over the Volgograd region. Russian hackers briefly took control of a dam in Norway earlier this year, the country's counter-intelligence agency chief said on Wednesday, the first time Oslo has officially attributed the cyberattack to its neighbour. While in command of the dam in Bremanger, western Norway, on 7 April, the hackers opened a flood gate and released 500 litres (132 gallons) of water a second for four hours before the attack was detected and stopped, authorities previously said. No one was injured. The UK's spy chief accused Russia in September last year of waging a 'staggeringly reckless campaign' of sabotage in Europe, partly to scare European countries from helping Ukraine. Moscow denies the allegation.

Melania Trump threatens to sue Hunter Biden for $1bn over Jeffrey Epstein claim
While Donald Trump has admitted to being friends with Jeffrey Epstein at one time, he claims the pair fell out after the billionaire paedo financier poached employees from his Florida golf club Melania Trump has threatened to sue Joe Biden's son Hunter after he claimed billionaire paedophile Jeffrey Epstein introduced her to t he president. The First Lady's legal team described the comments as "false, disparaging, defamatory and inflammatory" as they warned if he did not retract the claim, they would launch a $1bn lawsuit against him. Biden made the comments earlier this month during an interview. He also criticised her husband's former ties to the monster financier, who took his own life while awaiting trial over sex offences in 2019. While Trump and Epstein were friends at one point, the president has claimed they fell out after the paedophile poached employees that worked at his golf club in Florida. In a letter addressed to Biden's lawyers, Melania's legal team demands he retracts the claim and apologise or face the crippling lawsuit. The First Lady has suffered "overwhelming financial and reputational harm" due to the claim that he repeated, the letter states. The letter also gets a little more personal as the youngest Biden son is accused of having a "vast history of trading on the names of others", adding that the recent comments were a way of him "draw[ing] attention to yourself". Earlier this month, Biden told filmmaker Andrew Callaghan that unreleased documents would "implicate" President Trump. He said: "Epstein introduced Melania to Trump - the connections are so wide and deep." The claim first emerged in a critical biography of the president penned by journalist Michael Wolff. In a Daily Beast interview, Wolff claimed the first lady was an associate of the sex offender when she met Trump. The outlet later retracted the story after receiving a similar letter. The first lady accused Biden of relying on the contents of a since-removed article for his claims. The legal team describe the article as "false and defamatory". The archived version of the Daily Beast article reads: "After this story was published, The Beast received a letter from First Lady Melania Trump's attorney challenging the headline and framing of the article. "After reviewing the matter, the Beast has taken down the article and apologizes for any confusion or misunderstanding." It comes ahead of the release of an explosive book about Prince Andrew, which could potentially have implications reaching as far as the White House. Andrew Lownie's latest work, The Rise and Fall of the House of York, dedicates a whole chapter to the paedophile billionaire Jeffrey Epstein. Lownie suggests that Andrew's connection with Epstein was the royal's downfall. In 2022, the Duke of York - the youngest son of the late Queen Elizabeth - faced US civil proceedings over sexual assault allegations. While he paid a settlement, Andrew has always denied any wrongdoing. He subsequently agreed to stop using his Royal Highness title and ceased all public duties and saw his military honours and Royal patronages "returned to the monarch".
