Muharraq Snatch Khalifa Bin Salman Cup in Electric Final
TDT | Manama
Muharraq fought back to beat Manama 89-86 in an explosive final on Wednesday night, lifting the Khalifa Bin Salman Basketball Cup at Khalifa Sports City Arena.
Trailing by seven at halftime (41-48), Muharraq stormed back in front of a deafening crowd, with American guard Myron Gordon dropping 30 points in a performance that defined the comeback. Mohammed Nasser (13 points), Mohammed Ameer (12), Tony Mitchell (11), and Ali Husain Ali all hit double digits in scoring to seal the deal.
Manama's Tony Carr led all scorers with 28 points but couldn't drag his side over the finish line.
A Crown in Front of Kings of the Court
The final unfolded in a jubilant atmosphere, as fans packed the venue, waving club scarves and erupting with every big play. Adding to the spectacle was the high-profile guest list, which included FIBA president Shaikh Saud bin Ali Al Thani, Arab Basketball Federation president Major General Ismail Al Gergawi, and Saudi Olympic Committee vice president Prince Fahad bin Jalawi.
The final also coincided with the FIBA Congress and the Hall of Fame ceremony, further boosting Bahrain's growing status as a regional sporting powerhouse. BOC secretary general Faris Al Kooheji personally welcomed the global basketball delegation at Bahrain International Airport, conveying greetings from Supreme Council for Youth and Sport first deputy chairman and BOC president HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
Glory Lifted, Respect Shared
At the post-match ceremony, Bahrain Olympic Committee vice president Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa presented the trophy to Muharraq Club and praised both teams for their elite-level basketball and sportsmanship. He hailed Muharraq's win as a reward for the club's season-long commitment and also lauded Manama for their high standard of play and professionalism.
A Night That Meant More
"This win reflects the hard work of Muharraq's management and technical staff this season," said Shaikh Isa, adding that the packed arena and seamless organisation "show how far Bahraini basketball has come in terms of performance and event hosting." With the world watching and the stakes sky-high, Bahrain delivered a final for the ages, and Muharraq stood tallest when it mattered most.

Egypt Dominate Bahrain in Opening Friendly
TDT | Manama Mixed Signals in Cairo Bahrain's men's volleyball team opened their training camp in Egypt with a 4–0 defeat to the hosts in a friendly match at the Dr Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall in Cairo. The straight-sets loss (25–23, 25–20, 25–18, 25–23) was a challenging start to the side's preparations for the upcoming Asian Men's Volleyball Championship. Though Egypt took control of most sets, Bahrain showed signs of resistance, particularly in the tightly contested first and fourth. Ultimately, the home side's match fitness and home advantage gave them the edge. Setbacks Serve a Purpose The match was the first in a series of tune-ups during Bahrain's training camp, which runs through 12 June. The trip forms a key part of the team's lead-up to the continental tournament, set to be hosted in Bahrain from 17 to 24 June. For Bahrain's coaching staff, this early test provides a reference point. Serve reception, defensive transitions, and match tempo are areas likely to receive focus in the days ahead. Egypt's Edge With their domestic season recently concluded, Egypt looked more polished across key phases. Their consistency and physical presence were evident, especially in the middle sets where they pulled away with minimal resistance. Still, Bahrain's competitiveness in the tighter sets showed the potential for progress. A handful of errors late in the opening and closing sets proved decisive. Focus on Asian Cup More friendlies are expected in the coming days, offering Bahrain a chance to recalibrate. These matches will help fine-tune combinations and build cohesion before the squad returns home for the final phase of preparations. While the result in Cairo wasn't ideal, it came with timing that allows for correction. With the Asian Championship on home soil just weeks away, Bahrain now has a clearer sense of the standard required, and time to meet it.

‘Sky's the limit' for Tiafoe at French Open
AFP | Paris Frances Tiafoe believes the 'sky's the limit' for him after reaching the French Open quarter-finals for the first time on Sunday. The American downed German world number 66 Daniel Altmaier 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) in the last 16 to set up a match with Lorenzo Musetti for a semi-final place. It will be Tiafoe's first ATP quarter-final since finishing runner-up at a low-key event in Houston in March. 'It's been horrible. I've been travelling around, and it hasn't been fun at all,' he said. 'Kind of faced it. After that it gave me space to just play. You know, when I can play, I can play. This is not really something that's like a shock. 'When I'm playing well, I'm there and present and having fun, I think the sky's the limit for me.' The 27-year-old, who has reached at least the quarters at the last three US Opens, is yet to drop a set in Paris and is confident he can go even further. 'I've been the super dark horse. I don't think anyone is really thinking that I was going to even be in this position,' added Tiafoe. 'But at the same time, I don't really look at it like house money. 'Now that I'm here, I'm like, 'Let 's win'. I was having dinner yesterday. I'm like, ' Yeah, feeling great, butlet's keep winning ' . There 's no thing more fun than winning. 'Once I get my feet going and matches under me, I'm dangerous. Then I'm feeling really good, and I'll play anybody.'
