Bhubaneswar: Family members of the 15-year-old Puri girl, who succumbed to her burn injuries at AIIMS Delhi on Saturday, said persistent stress had forced her to end her life even as opposition BJD and Congress claimed the police and govt were trying to hush up the probe, a charge denied by the BJP and the security establishment.
"My daughter ended her life due to family-related stress. We do not hold anyone responsible for her death. Govt and doctors tried their best to save her," her father said on Sunday after receiving his daughter's body. The 15-year-old was airlifted to Delhi on July 20 from AIIMS Bhubaneswar where she was admitted on July 19, the day of the incident.
Initially, she had claimed three unknown men had set her on fire, but subsequently withdrew her statement before a magistrate.
Unfazed by the bereaved family's appeal to keep her death away from politics, opposition parties trained guns at the police and govt.
BJD, which claimed the girl was murdered, said the manner in which the Odisha govt and police were trying to hush up the matter was shocking. "Though she was murdered after being doused with kerosene by three men as per her statement, Odisha police, through an X post claimed no one was involved in the incident," Sasmit Patra, BJD Rajya Sabha member, said.

Congress member Sonali Sahoo claimed the girl's family was pressurised by the govt and police not to speak the truth. "Police have manipulated the investigation and turned the murder case into a suicide to protect the govt," Sahoo alleged.
Denying the charges, a police officer said, "We accorded top priority to the case and probed her charges with all seriousness. However, there was no evidence to corroborate her allegations.
She told a magistrate at AIIMS Delhi that she had set herself on fire, though she had previously spoken about three unknown men out of trauma."
Deputy chief minister K V Singh Deo hit back at the opposition criticism. "The opposition parties should stay away from politicising such tragic matters. The govt took all necessary steps, but unfortunately, her life could not be saved," Singh Deo said, adding that the girl's family has no complaints against the govt or police.
"Normally, in such cases, the victim's family doesn't stand with the govt. But here, the family is with the govt. Family members are saying the govt has done its best," Singh Deo pointed out.
The girl's body reached the Bhubaneswar airport around 11:10pm. There was massive security presence at the airport to prevent any untoward incident given that members of all parties had gathered.

Trump signals support for Israeli PM Netanyahu's Gaza takeover amid global criticism

US President Donald Trump has signalled tacit approval for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plan to take over the Gaza Strip, framing it as an Israeli decision amid growing international criticism, The Hill reported. While committing the US to lead humanitarian aid efforts amid Gaza's dire crisis, Trump refrained from opposing Israel's military expansion in the region. "As far as the rest of it, I really can't say. That's going to be pretty much up to Israel," he said earlier this week, The Hill added. Netanyahu dismissed international criticism, stating, "We are not going to occupy Gaza - we are going to free Gaza from Hamas." He vowed to establish a peaceful civilian administration independent of Hamas or the Palestinian Authority to secure hostages' release and prevent future threats. Live Events Israeli military chief Eyal Zamir warned the Cabinet the occupation could endanger hostages and entrap the military but committed to executing the plan "in the best possible way." The Israeli public remains divided, with many doubting the operation will end Hamas's rule or secure hostages. Opposition leader Yair Lapid called the Cabinet's decision a "total disaster." In Washington, bipartisan support for Israel persists, but Netanyahu's war strategy and the humanitarian toll have eroded some public opinion, with voices like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene calling the conflict a "genocide." Sen. Bernie Sanders gained increased support for blocking arms sales to Israel. Mediators from Egypt and Qatar, collaborating with the US, are reportedly drafting a ceasefire framework involving the release of hostages in exchange for ending the war and Israeli withdrawal, The Associated Press reported. Will Todman of the Center for Strategic and International Studies warned of the risks of a prolonged Israeli occupation without a clear exit plan, saying, "Unless the United States changes its stance, I think ultimately, Israel will continue with this plan."

Modi's initiative sped up metro yellow line: Vijayendra

Bengaluru, Aug 10 (UNI) Karnataka BJP President Vijayendra Yediyurappa today credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi's personal initiative and interest for the rapid progress of the metro yellow line project, which will benefit over eight lakh residents in Bengaluru's southern districts, while accusing the Congress of trying to claim credit despite poor infrastructure under its watch. Speaking to reporters here, he said the project gathered pace when the BJP was in power in the state, adding that it is the duty of every state government to execute such works, and 'nobody can claim exclusive credit.' 'At the end of the day, people are happy,' he remarked. Vijayendra alleged that the Congress is 'always in the forefront to take credit' even as Bengaluru struggles with pothole-ridden roads. 'The inauguration of the yellow line will greatly benefit commuters, especially the IT corridor, which is very important,' he said. The long-awaited yellow line will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister later today, along with the flagging off of the Vande Bharat Express between Bengaluru and Belagavi. Vijayendra said not only Bengaluru but the entire state was eagerly awaiting Modi's visit, calling it a 'dream come true' for lakhs of residents. UNI BDN AAB
