India's star all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who has often performed for the tricolour at the biggest stages with both bat and ball alike and is a vital part of ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and Champions Trophy 2025 winning set-ups, also posted, "Happy Independence Day, India."
The 22-year-old Tilak Varma, who has represented India in four ODIs and 25 T20Is, also posted on X that playing for India for him is the "biggest motivation" and "greatest honour". With 749 runs in 24 T20I innings at an average of 49.93, strike rate of over 155, two centuries and three fifties, he is India's newest rock-solid number three in the T20I set-up, leading up to the ICC T20 World Cup to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka next year.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted the tricolor at Red Fort,as the nation marked the celebration of the 79th Independence Day.Flying Officer Rashika Sharma assisted the Prime Minister in hoisting the flag, after which flower petals were showered from two Mi-17 helicopters of the Indian Air Force - one carrying the national flag and the other 'Operation Sindoor' flag. Wing Commander Vinay Poonia and Wing Commander Aditya Jaiswal piloted the aircraft.
This year's celebrations carry the theme 'Naya Bharat,' reflecting the government's vision of achieving 'Viksit Bharat' by 2047.

'In the next 8 weeks, we will reach out to all 90 assembly constituencies of Jammu and Kashmir, gathering signatures from the people in support of the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. We will not rest until our rights are restored. We cannot be denied equality,' Omar Abdullah said while two former CMs Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti were in audience along with over a dozen legislators. The PDP criticised Omar Abdullah's signature campaign. 'Omar Abdullah owes an apology not a signature campaign for normalising 5th August. With 50 MLAs behind him, he has reduced the fight for J&K's statehood to token gestures, after seeking votes door-to-door on the promise of restoring pre–5th August status. This is not just retreat, it is betrayal. The people gave him a historic mandate to fight for Article 370 and statehood, not to stage political theatre. If he has already surrendered, he must admit it and apologise to every citizen of J&K for selling promises he never intended to keep,' PDP legislative party leader Waheed ur Rehman Para wrote on X. People's Conference chairman Sajjad Lone said he supports statehood but the said signature campaign has no legal value. 'I beg you. Please stop this childish and immature attitude. Instead of pursuing these goals with conviction, NC has chosen the path of surrender and soft obedience towards the BJP. This signature campaign is nothing but a diversion from their betrayal,' he said. He termed Omar's statement a classic case of 'political theatre', noting that the NC's past performance in power and their silence during the critical years post-August 5, 2019, speaks volumes about their priorities. 'If Omar truly had the will, he would have mobilised legislators including that of oppositions , taken legal and constitutional routes and built a national-level consensus for the restoration of rights. Instead, he's now going door-to-door collecting signatures, as if Kashmir's dignity can be traded with a petition paper,' he said.

Punjab CM: Cops to get ₹1.2 lakh for 1-kg heroin seizure from next year
The cops performing well in the 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' (anti-drug war) campaign will receive monetary reward, chief minister Bhagwant Mann has said while claiming that the narcotics supply network has been on its last legs. During his Independence Day speech in Faridkot, he said, 'It has been decided that from March 1, 2026, the police personnel recovering 1-kg heroin will get a cash reward of ₹1.2 lakh.' Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann (PTI file) Asserting that Pakistan has been the source of the drugs reaching the state, he said the government has demolished houses built using drug money, jailed smugglers and curbed the open sale of drugs. 'Punjab is the first state in the country to have its own anti-drone system which will destroy any flying object coming from the other side of the border. For the first time, an anti-drug syllabus has been introduced in the schools of the state to make students aware of the scourge of drugs,' he added. The CM offered prayers at Tilla Baba Sheikh Farid. Mann highlighted that Punjab has topped the National Achievement Survey 2025 in all subjects for the first time since 2017. 'The government school students are clearing JEE and NEET, and Punjab-origin players captain the national football, basketball, women's cricket and men's hockey teams,' he said. He lauded the academic achievements of girls, pointing out that the Class 8 and Class 10 toppers — Navjot Kaur and Akshnoor Kaur — of 2025 hailed from Faridkot.

Sikh family attacked in MP's Bhind, protesters seek action against cops
A non-resident Indian (NRI) family from the United Kingdom was pelted with stones following a dispute with police in Bhind in Madhya Pradesh, leaving two children injured and their car damaged, an official said on Saturday. The incident took place on Thursday on the Station Road near Fatehpur village in Gohad tehsil, following which the Sikh community, to which the family belongs, held protests, including near the Gohad Chauraha police station, seeking stringent action against those involved. Local Congress MLA Keshav Desai joins the protest in Gohad, about 40 km from the district headquarters, says he will ensure the constable is booked and the SHO is transferred. The protesters, who wanted an FIR against constable Kuldeep Kushwaha and transfer of the station house officer, called off the stir after superintendent of police Asit Yadav assured them of strict action following a fair probe, local Sikh community leader Karan Singh said. Kushwaha was sent to police lines, SP Yadav said while denying that the constable was taken off field duty on Friday after the NRI family contacted embassy authorities in Delhi. 'The two children sustained only bruises. The constable was not directly involved in the incident. First, we will register an FIR against unidentified people who indulged in the act. Action will be taken on the basis of further investigation. This is a rash and negligent act. They threw stones to stop the vehicle, which resulted in its windows getting damaged, as well as injuries to those inside,' the SP said. 'The attackers are being identified. It was not an attack. It was a miscommunication between the two (NRI and policeman). Both had a heated argument. The two sides did not know each other. I have spoken to the NRI family,' the SP added. Local Congress MLA Keshav Desai, who joined the protest in Gohad, about 40 km from the district headquarters, said he would ensure the constable is booked and the SHO is transferred. 'Dr Vikramjeet Singh, his wife Rajveer Kaur, daughter Ravneet Kaur and son Rohanpreet Singh came to Fatehpur village on August 14. Fatehpur is Rajveer Kaur's native village. Kushwaha, dressed in civil clothes, argued with them while their car was parked on Station Road to buy fruits and sweets,' Desai said. 'Kushwaha recorded a video of the vehicle, to which Dr Singh objected. Kushwaha threatened Dr Singh, who, possibly out of fear, tried to speed away. His vehicle was stopped by unidentified persons and his family attacked with sticks and stones near a dhaba. The children were injured and the vehicles windows were damaged,' Desai added.
