KK–Labuan ferry service resumes, boosting connectivity and tourism
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, accompanied by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories), Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, signs a plaque at the launch ceremony of the jetty and the inauguration of the Kota Kinabalu–Labuan Ferry Service at Kota Kinabalu Port on Tuesday.
KOTA KINABALU (May 27): The passenger ferry service between Kota Kinabalu and the Federal Territory of Labuan has resumed after several years of suspension, strengthening maritime transport links and reopening a vital route for public mobility and cross-regional economic development.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor said the resumption of this route is more than just a logistical move, it is a clear signal of the government's concern for the well-being of the people in Sabah and Labuan.
'This service is crucial for the people. It is not just a means of transportation, but a connector of families, education, tourism and business that have long been intertwined,' he said during the launch ceremony of the jetty and the Kota Kinabalu–Labuan Passenger Ferry at Kota Kinabalu Port on Tuesday.
He explained that the previous service disruptions were caused by several factors, including unsafe jetty structures, the withdrawal of fuel subsidies for operators, and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, all of which affected the continuity of mobility for the people.
As an immediate solution, the ferry terminal was relocated from Jesselton Point to Kota Kinabalu Port, with operational management now fully under the Kota Kinabalu Port authority.
'This project also received an allocation of RM1.3 million from the Ministry of Federal Territories for improvement works,' he said.
'I would like to express my appreciation to all agencies involved, including the Department of Internal Affairs and Research (PHEDNP), Sabah Ports Authority (LPPS), the Ministry of Works, the Ministry of Federal Territories, and Suria Group for their joint efforts in realizing this initiative,' he added.
Hajiji said the ferry service is expected to have a positive impact on the state's tourism sector, especially in the lead-up to Visit Sabah Year 2026.
'It also opens new opportunities in trade and investment between Sabah and Labuan,' he said.
He emphasized that the ties between Sabah and Labuan go beyond geography, they encompass deep-rooted historical, cultural and social connections, making this route highly significant to the people of both regions.
According to him, many Sabahans work and reside in Labuan, and vice versa. Therefore, the reconnection of this route is highly meaningful to many.
He said that with the resumption of this service, the public now has more transportation options, whether by air, by road to Menumbok, or directly via express ferry from Kota Kinabalu to Labuan as in the past.
Hajiji stated that the launch marks the beginning of a stronger, more efficient and sustainable maritime transportation framework, in line with the state's aspiration to provide people-friendly and environmentally friendly facilities for future generations.
He assured that the State Government is committed to ensuring that no citizen is left behind due to logistical limitations, and infrastructure development will continue to be driven for inclusive progress.
'May this jetty and ferry service become a bridge that connects not only regions but also relationships, economic opportunities, and the future hopes of the people,' he said.

'Opportune time to accumulate quality stocks'
AmEquities CEO Ng said three conditions are needed to revive market activity. KUALA LUMPUR: AmInvestment Bank Bhd has a cautiously optimistic view on market outlook, citing stable fundamentals but acknowledged ongoing headwinds that suppress market sentiment. 'Deals are in the pipeline, but the problem is uncertainty,' the bank's newly-appointed chief executive officer Christopher Ng Kok Wai told StarBiz at the launching of the AmEquities trading platform and media briefing here, yesterday. Many investment opportunities are available but companies are not able to continue without improved market clarity, he added. According to Ng, three conditions are needed to revive market activity namely a strong economic impetus, US interest rate cuts and clarity on tariffs as well as global trade. 'Fund managers are still holding elevated levels of cash relative to pre-Covid-19 norms. Once a catalyst emerges, we expect those funds to be deployed,' he noted. He said last year's positive market performance was supported by the strengthening ringgit, strong inflows into the data centre segment and political stability. Ng described the current market environment as being on 'auto cruise', where it is steady but lacks momentum. 'It's not bad, but it's not good either. We need an impetus,' he said, adding that global uncertainties, particularly around tariffs and the US rate cycle, continued to weigh on sentiment. While the broader market outlook remained mixed, Ng said fundamentals remained sound. 'From a domestic standpoint, consumption is still strong,' he said. He stated that crude oil prices of between US$70 and US$80 per barrel would be sufficient for the oil and gas sector to remain viable. 'The industry isn't asking for a boom, just stability,' he added. On the retail front, Ng acknowledged that most investors had remained cautious and on the sidelines. 'Retail investors are understandably hesitant, especially with the external environment. But there are still opportunities,' he said. With the FBM KLCI trading below its historical average, it could be an opportune time to accumulate quality stocks. 'It may not feel like the perfect time, but valuations are reasonable. Caution is warranted, but not paralysis. 'We are cautiously optimistic. As a focused, Malaysian-centric player, we see this market environment as a window to create opportunities, even when sentiment is soft,' he added. The AmEquities trading platform is offering a host of advanced features including customisable dashboards, access to live market data in real time with multilingual support. It aims to provide investors with a seamless and informed trading experience, reflecting the bank's commitment to innovation amid a challenging market environment.

Bung the last person to talk about loyalty
KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Information Chief Datuk Joniston Bangkuai has responded to Sabah Umno chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin's latest remarks, labelling them arrogant and disconnected from Sabah's political landscape. "Bung is the last person who should talk about loyalty or sincerity. He tried to bring down the very government he was part of, just to serve his own ambition. That speaks volumes," he said. He rejected Bung's claim that GRS betrayed Barisan Nasional (BN), calling it a clear attempt to distort the facts and shift blame. "It's Bung who conspired with Warisan and Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (PKDM) in January 2023 to topple the government led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. "He wasn't betrayed, he was the one doing the betraying. Even while sitting in the state Cabinet,he had no respect for his colleagues in the state government led by Hajiji as Chief Minister." Joniston added that GRS was never reliant on Umno. "If anyone needs to reflect, it's Bung. Why did even your own colleagues abandon your 'Langkah Kinabalu'? Why did PH support Hajiji, not you? The answer is obvious because the trust wasn't with you," he said. "Sabah isn't your political lifeline. Don't treat this state like your fallback plan," he said. Earlier today, Bung had said Sabah Umno will not cooperate with GRS for the 17th state election. He stressed that the party will only consider any form of cooperation with GRS after the election. Bung claimed that the bitter experience of working with GRS in the past has made Sabah Umno more cautious in forming political alliances, especially with the Sabah-based coalition, in orderto avoid being betrayed again. He had earlier announced BN's cooperation with Sabah Pakatan Harapan (PH), even before any formal decision was made by the top leadership of both coalitions. The collaboration was later formalised through a joint statement by leaders from both BN and PH at the federal level.

Italy struggles to revive lagging fibre rollout plan
FILE PHOTO: Reels of optical fiber cables are seen in a storage area in Perugia, Italy, June 23, 2017. Picture taken June 23, 2017. REUTERS/Alessandro Bianchi/File Photo MILAN (Reuters) -A push by Italy's government for state-backed telecoms firms Open Fiber and FiberCop to accelerate work on a European Union-funded network plan has hit a snag as the companies are struggling to agree terms of a potential deal, three sources said. FiberCop and its smaller rival Open Fiber were entrusted with cabling more than 3 million buildings across Italy by the end of June 2026 under a 3.4 billion euro ($3.9 billion)programme aimed at rolling out ultra-fast broadband networks. Only around half of the targeted 3.4 million buildings have been upgraded, latest government data showed, with Open Fiber, which was awarded 2.2 million buildings, lagging behind FiberCop in its work. Italy has said it was considering handing KKR-backed FiberCop some of the work assigned to rival Open Fiber to speed up the rollout as it tries to meet the deadline agreed as part of a COVID-19 recovery plan. FiberCop had said it was ready to take over in full the work assigned to its rival. But government-sponsored talks between the two companies proved difficult, with FiberCop offering to take over the work at cost price by the end of this month, the sources say. Open Fiber is pushing back on such terms, arguing it would be hard to complete a potential spin-off of its areas swiftly and agreeing a fair valuation for them would take some months, the people said. Open Fiber's board of directors will discuss the situation at a board meeting on Tuesday but the chances of an agreement to hand FiberCop some of the areas are seen as low at this stage, the people said. Open Fiber and FiberCop declined to comment. Italy lags European peers in high-speed fixed-line internet coverage, with some 60% of households having access to ultrafast broadband against an EU average of 79%, according to EU data. A senior official from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's office said it is up to the companies to take the steps needed for an agreement and that time is running short. Open Fiber is 60% owned by state lender CDP with the remainder in the hands of Australian fund Macquarie. FiberCop was spun off last year from former state telco Telecom Italia (TIM) and sold to a KKR-led consortium, including Italy's economy ministry, under a deal worth up to 22 billion euros. Italy's conservative government is also keen to combine Open Fiber assets with those of FiberCop to create a wholesale-only telecommunications network provider under state control.
