Haunting faces of teens who'd still be alive if it wasn't 'for female migrant who crossed border illegally'
Noelia Saray Martinez-Avila, a 30-year-old illegal immigrant from Honduras, was arrested after she allegedly drove on the wrong side of a Wisconsin highway and killed the young couple on July 20.
Hallie Helgeson, 18, died at the scene, and her boyfriend, 19-year-old Brady Heiling succumbed to his injuries a few days later, reported the West Central Tribune.
On Sunday, DHS announced they lodged an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainer against Martinez-Avila for her arrest and removal from the country.
'Hallie Helgeson and Brady Heiling had their whole lives ahead of them—and they would still be alive today if it weren't for Noelia Saray Martinez-Avila—a criminal illegal alien from Honduras,' said Assistant DHS Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
'Martinez-Avila recklessly drove the wrong way on a highway while intoxicated and killed these two teens.'
Martinez-Avila has been charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, homicide by the use of a vehicle, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and causing injury, knowingly operating a vehicle with a revoked license while causing death, knowingly operating a vehicle with a revoked license while causing bodily harm and failing to install an ignition interlock device and violating a court order.
According to the court documents, when police arrived on scene they discovered the teens' damaged Volkswagen SUV and Martinez-Avila's Chevy SUV engulfed in flames, reported The Minnesota Star Tribune.
The illegal migrant denied she had been drinking, but police reported seeing unopen cans of beer in her car and said she smelled of alcohol.
A preliminary breath test measured her blood alcohol content at .208 percent, over two and half times the legal limit in Wisconsin.
Court records shoe Martinez-Avila has a November 2020 conviction for drunk driving, and was supposed to have a device installed in her car that prevents it from starting if the driver has been drinking.
However, she did not have that device installed when the crash occurred, according to the Wisconsin State Journal of Madison.
After DHS announced their ICE detainer for Martinez-Avila, they accused Dane County officials of having a history of not honoring immigration detainers due to sanctuary polices.
'ICE has lodged an arrest detainer to remove this public safety threat from the U.S.,' McLaughlin said.
'Unfortunately, this sanctuary jurisdiction has a history of not honoring ICE arrest detainers often leading to the release of murderers and other heinous criminals Under Secretary Noem, these precious victims will not be forgotten, and we will fight for justice.'
As of Monday, Martinez-Avila is being held in the Dane County jail in lieu of $250,000 bail for each count. Her next court appearance is scheduled for August 28.
The Dane County Sheriff's Office told DailyMail.com they are aware of the ICE detainer and said it is DHS's responsibility to obtain and present an arrest warrant signed by a judge so they can lawfully take custody of someone.
'Supporting crime victims remains one of our highest priorities. They deserve their opportunity for justice, and if an individual is found guilty, they should be held accountable through our court system,' said Sheriff Kalvin Barrett.
'Deporting someone before they face trial allows them to evade that accountability—it's essentially a "get out of jail free" card.'

Helgeson graduated from Montevideo High School in May and had recently started working at an assisted living facility, according to her obituary.
'A dedicated and spirited student, she was involved in numerous activities and excelled both academically and athletically. She was a proud three-sport athlete, participating in tennis, basketball, and softball,' her obituary said.
'Hallie will be deeply missed by all who knew her, remembered for her warmth, kindness, big smile, and the light she brought into every space she entered.'
Heiling had been airlifted to the University of Wisconsin Hospital, Madison, where he went through multiple surgeries before he passed away.
'We are weak, weary and heart broken and need to rest,' his mother, Jen Heiling, said on the family's CaringBridge site.
He graduated from MACCRAY High School in 2024 and had been a three-sport athlete.

Diddy's ex Cassie Ventura returns to social media for first time since giving birth... after painful testimony
Cassie Ventura made her return to social media on Thursday after giving birth in May. The 38-year-old singer reposted a humorous video to her Instagram Stories after sharing her last Instagram post on April 19 of this year and welcoming her third child with her husband Alex Fine on May 27. The post, which included a comment from Ventura, appeared to also be her first Instagram activity since her emotional testimony against her abusive ex-boyfriend Sean 'Diddy' Combs, 55, just weeks before she gave birth. Diddy has denied her claims and has maintained his innocence. The jury ultimately acquitted the rap mogul of the most serious charges, but did convict him in July of two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, relating to Ventura and an anonymous woman referred to as 'Jane' at trial. The charges carry a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for each count, though prosecutors have indicated that sentencing guidelines suggest a little over 5 years maximum. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jen Kearney • Newborn, Baby & Toddler Sleep Consultant 💤 (@momswithplans) Diddy's request for bail was once again denied earlier this week, meaning he will have to wait in jail until his sentencing, which is scheduled for October 3. Ventura made her return to Instagram by reposting a video originally shared by Jen Kearney, who bills herself as a baby and toddler sleep consultant. The video, which was soundtracked with DJKhaled and Rihanna's song Wild Thoughts, featured a group of people standing outdoors for a gathering. Suddenly a man dressed in a white button-up shirt stars dancing, even as the rest of the people around him stand perfectly still. 'When your old self slowly starts coming out postpartum,' read the caption on the original clip. Ventura weighed in with her own comment to her Insta Stories repost: 'Factual. Little by little lol.' She appeared to be thinking about getting back into the swing of things after giving birth to her two-month-old son, whose name has not yet been reported. She and Fine share two other children, daughters Frankie, five, and Sunny, four. Ventura and Fine, a personal trainer, got engaged in August 2019 and tied the knot the following month with a ceremony held in Malibu, California. The two began dating sometime after the end of Ventura's on–off relationship with Diddy in 2018, which wasn't announced until October of that year. Ventura and Diddy began dating back in 2007, though they reportedly broke up in late 2015 and again in the summer of 2016, before their final split. During Diddy's trial on charges of racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking, Ventura testified that the rapper had subjected her to beatings and deviant sexual manipulation during the course of their relationship. During her tearful testimony, she accused Diddy of forcing her to masturbate while looking at a male prostitute and describing what she saw to Diddy, who would watch the encounters. 'It was always awkward… sitting describing someone's penis to another male was pretty awkward and humiliating but eventually it became normal. It would lead to intercourse,' she claimed. Ventura said Combs and the male escort would sometimes both have sex with her, while at other times only the escort would while her boyfriend instead watched. Shockingly, Ventura alleged that the escorts could only ejaculate when given the OK by Diddy, and afterward he had her go into a separate room with her to 'put the semen on his body… usually on his chest, on his nipples.' Ventura also gave a dramatic account of the infamous 2016 hotel hallway surveillance video that shows her trying to leave a freak off in the now-closed InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles' Century City neighborhood. The video shows Combs — who is wearing only a white towel — punching and kicking Ventura before she is able to get on the elevator to safety, then dragging her back to the hotel room where the freak off party was held.

Pennsylvania shooting: man kills neighbour, ambushes and wounds two state troopers
A 61-year-old man shot and killed his neighbor in rural Pennsylvania on Thursday and then ambushed responding state troopers, wounding two and shooting down a drone while firing dozens of rounds from a semiautomatic weapon, police said. The attacker was killed by police. The boyfriend of the woman who was killed, Lori Wasko, called 911 from their home near Thompson, in Susquehanna county, to report that shots had been fired, state police Col. Christopher Paris told reporters. Police did not say why Carmine Faino decided to kill 57-year-old Wasko outside her home and then fire at responding troopers Joseph Perechinsky and William Jenkins. Faino also fired at police vehicles and at an SUV operated by a responding emergency worker, Paris said. The EMT was injured when his vehicle veered off the roadway. 'I don't want to speak to his motive leading up to this. I would say you can draw certain conclusions from the standpoint that we believe Faino shot our victim prior to our arrival and then from a position of tactical advantage fired dozens and dozens of rounds', Paris said. Investigators are looking into Faino's past. Both troopers were in stable condition with serious injuries Thursday night, he said. Paris said the troopers 'were dispatched to check the welfare of an individual. And there was additional information about shots being fired. But upon their arrival, they were immediately fired upon and ambushed. They are very lucky to be alive'. Perechinsky applied a tourniquet to Jenkins, and two other troopers were able to help rescue them, Paris said. He praised Perechinsky for providing first aid to his colleague after they were shot and for working while wounded to prevent further injuries or death. 'Perechinsky was able to commandeer a tractor-trailer that was driving by, and he ordered the driver of that tractor-trailer to pull his semi rig across the roadway so that more people would not drive down that roadway and potentially be subjected to the fire', the police spokesperson said. Perechinsky was 'still thinking at that point in time, after being shot twice in the chest, what can I do to secure this location? What can I do to make sure nobody else gets hurt?' Paris added. The troopers were flown to hospitals for medical care. Pennsylvania's governor, Josh Shapiro, called the two troopers heroes and said Perechinsky 'saved lives'. 'He acted decisively. He acted thoughtfully. And the work he did today exemplifies the absolute best of the Pennsylvania state police', Shapiro said. Faino had a rifle and did not comply with demands, a state police statement said. He was 'ultimately shot and killed during the incident', police said. The shooting happened about 5 miles north of the borough of Thompson, 163 miles north of Philadelphia. Erika Mills, who lives less than a mile from where the shootings took place, said it made for a terrifying day in a community that is usefully peaceful. 'This is a very very quiet town. There has never been anything comparable', she said.

Virginia youth pastor sent disgusting texts to young girls while posing as a teen
A Virginia youth pastor posed as a teenager to groom underage girls on social media apps - exchanging appalling messages while luring them into sex chats. The 34-year-old, known to his church as 'Pastor Jake' is now behind bars, accused of posing as a boy to coax sexually explicit photos and videos from the girls. At one point the perv pastor told an underage girl that it was 'time for her to see her first d***.' Jacob Ryan Barnett, Associate Pastor at Catawba Valley Baptist Church, was arrested on Wednesday in North Carolina following a months-long FBI investigation that uncovered a disturbing digital trail of exploitation and manipulation. According to a federal affidavit, Barnett used TikTok, Snapchat, and Discord to pose as a 17-year-old named 'Jodie Johnson,' messaging teen girls across the country and pressuring them into sending him explicit material. The videos included footage they had recorded of themselves at the ages of 14 and 15. One of the victims, identified in court documents as 'M.V.,' told investigators she believed she really was communicating with a teenage boy from Virginia. But in reality, the number belonged to Barnett - a father, a pastor, and a man who just 11 days ago delivered a sermon titled 'The Story of Salvation.' 'While the charges against Mr. Barnett are just allegations at this point, the facts presented do serve as a reminder for all parents to be aware of what their children are doing online,' said U.S. Attorney C. Todd Gilbert. 'Our kids occupy a world where those seeking to harm them have countless avenues, like TikTok, Discord, Snapchat and others, to reach across vast distances directly into their bedrooms.' The details in the affidavit are stomach-churning. According to federal investigators, Barnett - as 'Jodie Johnson' - messaged M.V. in May via TikTok and quickly moved the conversation to text. He repeatedly asked for pictures of her genitals and at one point told her it was 'time for her to see her first d**k.' 'I don't know if im readyyyy im only 15 and I barely know anything abt that whole topiccc,' the girl replied, according to the FBI affidavit. Despite her hesitation, Barnett is accused of continuing to pressure her for material and eventually received a sexually explicit video that the girl admitted was filmed when she was just 14. Investigators say Barnett was simultaneously on the phone with his wife during some of these exchanges. On May 19, phone records showed that Barnett messaged the girl at 4:30pm, answered a call from his wife at 4:32pm, received a batch of photos from the teen at 4:33pm, and replied to her again at 4:34pm. 'In other words, within less than five minutes, Barnett messaged M.V., talked to his wife for a minute, and messaged M.V. again,' the affidavit notes. Barnett also reportedly sent M.V. a photo of himself in boxers with the outline of his genitalia visible and asked when she last shaved her vagina. She responded with another video, filmed at age 14, depicting herself masturbating. On May 20, the FBI National Threat Operations Center received an online tip from a concerned mother in Michigan who had discovered the texts on her daughter's phone. After subpoenas to Verizon and Google, investigators linked the number behind the 'Jodie Johnson' alias to Jacob Barnett using his official Bethel Baptist Church email and tied to other accounts. Barnett previously served five years at Bethel Baptist Church in Yorktown, Virginia, where he was head of the children's ministry. He later moved to Catawba Valley Baptist Church, where he routinely interacted with youth and students. A second victim has now also come forward. According to the affidavit, Barnett communicated with another 15-year-old girl on Snapchat using the usernames 'duh_jodie' and 'jodie_j1234.' Like the first alleged victim he again told her it was 'time to see her first d**k' and encouraged her to send sexually explicit images. He reportedly described in graphic terms how he would have sex with her and instructed her on how to masturbate. Though many of the files the girl sent were encrypted or deleted, the FBI concluded based on context that they were explicit in nature. Barnett's TikTok account reportedly followed 'thousands of minor girls,' investigators said. The case has stunned the conservative church community in southwest Virginia, where Barnett served as the Associate Pastor of Students & Mobilization. The church's granite monument bearing the Ten Commandments still stands outside its Troutville building, but Pastor Jake's name has vanished from its website. Barnett is currently pursuing a master's degree at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary and previously graduated from The College at Southeastern in 2018. His wife, Cayla Barnett, is a graduate of Liberty University, which has faced its own scandals related to sex abuse in recent years. The couple's church bio says they enjoy 'visiting historical places such as the Battlefields of Yorktown and Colonial Williamsburg,' and that Barnett 'loves teaching the next generation about the truths of the Bible.' 'Together, [Jake and his wife] enjoy visiting historical places such as the Battlefields of Yorktown and Colonial Williamsburg… and spending time with family.' Less than two weeks ago on Sunday July 27, Barnett delivered a sermon in which he reportedly referenced the importance of 'settling with your accuser.' He was arrested three days later. Before his arrest, Barnett briefly answered a phone call from The Independent and claimed to be 'totally confused' about the allegations and refusing to elaborate. Barnett faces federal charges of attempted coercion and enticement of a minor, which carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and a maximum of life in prison. He is scheduled to appear in US District Court in Roanoke early next week. 'The heinous crimes Barnett is charged with are what keep parents up at night,' said Ann Busby, Acting Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's Richmond Division. 'Educating our kids and communities about the threats posed by faceless, online personas is crucial to maintaining their safety. Working with our partners, FBI Richmond will bring the full weight of the justice system on anyone who attempts to harm our children.
