Is carpooling an option in Muscat to reduce traffic, parking woes?

Muscat: Muscat Municipality is encouraging travellers in Oman to consider carpooling as a sustainable and economically efficient solution in the field of mobility. The civic body claims that carpooling will contribute to reducing the environmental impact and decongesting traffic, while also promoting solidarity and interaction between people who opt for this type of transport. While carpooling in itself is not a trend in Muscat among road users, the concept of shared taxis was quite popular in the country till a few years ago, particularly among the lowly-paid expatriates who could not afford to engage a taxi for daily commuting to offices and home. The shared taxi concept has seen a decline in recent times, with the growing popularity of app-based ride services and the development of the bus network in the capital and across the country. Other benefits of carpooling include pollution reduction as sharing vehicles reduces the number of cars on the road, which reduces emissions, contributing to the improvement of air quality and reducing the carbon footprint. By reducing the number of cars on the road, traffic congestion is also reduced, resulting in faster journeys and less stress for drivers Co-passengers can share transport costs, which allows them to reduce their expenses, and most importantly, carpooling will help to alleviate the demand for parking spaces in urban areas. Meanwhile, public transport has been gaining acceptance in the Sultanate as Mwasalat carried more than 4,750,000 (4.7 million) passengers in 2024 at the rate of 12,000 daily passengers. The Ferries carried 244,862 passengers and 60,000 vehicles at a rate of 671 daily passengers. The percentage of Omani passengers in intercity buses was 26.89% and 75% for Ferries. The percentage of Omanisation in the company is 94.85 percent. It may be noted that the first phase of public transport in Oman was between 2015-2018, which saw the introduction of bus services on main and secondary routes, streamlining of taxis, and improvement of the walkways. The second phase, which started in 2019 and will end this year, includes the expansion of bus services with new routes, dedicated bus lines, and the provision of new bus stations. The third phase (2026-2040) will witness the progress on the development of the Muscat metro and the introduction of water taxis. According to Market Research Future, the growing popularity of ridesharing platforms and specific carpooling applications can be attributed to their cost-effectiveness, affordability, and ecological advantages. Furthermore, government programs and rewards are contributing to the market expansion for carpooling. The market for carpooling offers opportunities for integrating technology, such as smooth payments, real-time ride matching, and dynamic route optimization.

Omani airspace sees 5% increase in aircraft movement: CAA

Muscat: Aircraft movements across Omani airspace increased by 18 percent to 50,101 in June 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, according to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which also reported number of passengers traveling through Muscat International Airport increased by 5 percent to 636,090 in June 2025, compared to the same period a year ago. It may be noted that the Middle East airspace was disrupted in the middle of June 2025 when Israeli attacks on Iran led to major airspace closures and flight cancellations across the region. Airlines rushed to reroute planes, and several airports temporarily halted flights. The disruptions had an impact on the thousands of air travellers. Air safety in Oman The Sultanate of Oman was ranked fifth in the compliance index for effective implementation of air safety control in the Sultanate of Oman after scoring 95.95 per cent in 2024, compared to 60.47 per cent and 133rd rank in 2020. The Sultanate of Oman was ranked fourth globally in the aviation incidents and accident investigation index and second in the Middle East and North Africa, while it is ranked first regionally in the areas of airworthiness and air navigation safety. The International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) Global Air Safety Oversight Audit Programme aims to assess the extent to which ICAO member states comply with the air safety standards and recommendations, done through regular inspections and analysis of safety data to improve global air safety. In the field of air navigation safety, the compliance rate increased from 50 per cent to 97.27 per cent as a result of improvements in control and follow-up procedures to ensure air navigation safety and its adherence to international standards.

Dhofar blooms as khareef season brings new charm

Muscat: While much of the Gulf is engulfed in the peak of summer heat, southern Oman quietly welcomes its most beautiful guest: Khareef. But Dhofar's monsoon is unlike any other. It doesn't bring parched leaves or arid winds — instead, it arrives as a gentle whisper of mist and drizzle, waking the land into vibrant life, according to visitors. 'This is something out of a fairytale,' says Elise Kramer, a tourist from Germany visiting Dhofar for the first time. 'I read about khareef, but nothing prepared me for the serenity and surreal beauty I'm witnessing here.' According to the National Centre for Statistics and Information, over 820,000 tourists visited Dhofar during the 2024 khareef season — a 15% increase from the previous year. Of those, GCC nationals made up more than 65%, while international interest from Europe and Asia continues to rise. The temperate climate, lush hills and soft monsoon rains attract families, nature lovers and photographers alike, all eager to escape the searing summer elsewhere in the region. Fog-draped hills and softly gushing waterfalls are among Dhofar's most iconic scenes. Locations such as Wadi Darbat and Ayn Athum offer breathtaking experiences. Hala Morsi, a visitor from Cairo, said: 'The moment I stepped out of the airport and felt the cool breeze, I knew this place was special. I've never seen such rich greenery in the Gulf. It's peaceful, pure and soul-refreshing.' Data from the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism confirms that Salalah's sites are among the most visited during khareef, consistently drawing record numbers each year. No trip to Dhofar is complete without experiencing its ancient gift to the world: frankincense. This aromatic resin, harvested from native Boswellia trees, has been traded for millennia across the Middle East, Africa and Europe. At Salalah's traditional souqs, tourists can witness frankincense being burned, smell its earthy arom, and purchase raw resin or fragrant oils. Maria Lopez, a tourist from Spain, describes it as magical: 'It's like stepping back in time. The scent is powerful, sacred even. I bought several packs and oils to take back to Madrid. This isn't just a souvenir — it's history in a jar.' Tourism-linked sales of frankincense products saw a 30% increase in the last khareef season, reflecting its cultural significance and growing international demand. Khareef isn't only about misty mountains — it's also a celebration of Dhofari heritage. At Al Haffa Market, visitors are drawn to local handicrafts, spices and traditional clothing, all offered with a generous dose of Omani hospitality. Amani al Zubaidi from Saudi Arabia said: 'I loved the souqs — the colours, the people, the scents. You don't feel like a tourist here, you feel like a welcomed guest.' Cafés, boutique stays and seasonal festivals help bring Dhofar's cultural spirit to life during khareef, turning tourism into a truly immersive experience.
