Popular motorcyclist lost leg after crash on Anglesey

A popular motorcyclist is recovering after losing part of his leg following a crash. Chris Newman's family have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and affection for the 53-year-old.
He was in a collision between his Honda motorbike and a Seat Ibiza car near Trearddur Bay on Anglesey at 9.30pm on May 1. It is understood an investigation is ongoing about the incident in Lon Isallt.
Mr Newman suffered 15 major injuries and was airlifted to the Royal Stoke University Hospital. He had to have part of his right leg amputated but his family said medics are keeping his spirits up. Get the best island stories from our Anglesey newsletter - sent every Friday
Relatives have set up a Gofundme appeal to help fund Chris's rehabilitation which quickly smashed through its £5,000 target. It currently stands at £6,915.
Son Michael, 28, told North Wales Live that a campsite worker heard the collision, came rushing out and contacted the relevant people. Michael, who is an architectural assistant in Leeds, found out about the accident the following morning from his family.
"It was a bit scary trying to find out what had happened." He said unfortunately the injuries meant part of his dad's right leg was "irrecoverable".
While in hospital in Stoke he is being well cared for by staff. "Nurses come to check on him every 15 to 20 minutes, keeping him perked up. He's very much a bubbly person so he likes that."
"We had £5,000 yesterday which was insane (and now it's over £6,000). It's brilliant."
He said his parents used to run a shop in Trearddur Bay and helped other people. "They would deliver milk to care homes free of charge," said Michael.
Later Chris was a gas engineer and would go out of his way to help people. Now it seems that goodwill is being reciprocated.
Michael said: "So many people have contributed to the appeal to support him. It's really nice. He said he finds it a bit overwhelming."
The donations are expected to go towards Chris's rehabilitation costs. He lives in a static caravan in the Trearddur Bay area which may be adapted for his needs and a prosthetic limb may be an option.
As for Michael, he is due to marry his fiancee Marged Enlli Huws in June and is desperately hoping his dad will be well enough to attend the ceremony.
On their on Gofundme page called "Chris's amputation recovery", Michael wrote: "He suffered 15 major injures from the collision which left him going through weeks of operations within the ICU of Stoke hospital. Despite the doctors best efforts he unfortunately had to have a leg amputation.
"These injuries will not only affect his day to day life but also affect his ability to work. Many of you will know my dad from Trearddur Bay, where he's been a familiar and friendly face for years.
"As a dedicated gas engineer, he's always been someone people could rely on - whether it was fixing a boiler in the middle of winter or lending a helping hand in the community.
"He's poured his heart and soul into supporting others, and now we're hoping others will do the same for him. Unfortunately, doctors have confirmed that he will no longer be able to return to work.
"This has put a significant financial strain on him and our family. We are raising £5,000 to help ease the immediate financial pressure - covering essential living costs, amend his living arrangements to accommodate his disability, therapy, and travel expenses for hospital visits.
"Any amount, no matter how little, would mean the world to us. If you're unable to donate, sharing this page would be just as appreciated. We're grateful for the love and kindness shown to him already, and we know he'll be deeply touched by the support of the community he's been proud to serve." Stop driving NOW: Urgent warning issued to Aussie motorists over deadly fault in popular car

Thousands of Australian drivers are being urged to stop driving immediately following a compulsory recall of vehicles fitted with faulty Takata airbags, which have been linked to injuries and deaths. BMW Australia has recalled 2,947 2010-2012 BMW 3 Series vehicles. The affected vehicles were manufactured between March 18, 2010, and May 24, 2012, although some may have been sold after this date. 'As the airbag gets older, a combination of high temperatures and humidity can cause the airbag inflator propellant to degrade,' a Product Safety recall said. 'Do not drive your vehicle under any circumstances if your vehicle is affected,' the recall said. 'There have been serious injuries and deaths.' Since the national recall campaign started in 2018, Australia has recorded one fatality and three serious injuries related to defective Takata airbags; however, none of these incidents involve the 2010-2012 BMW 3 Series mentioned in the recent safety alert. Since 2018, the compulsory recall has impacted 2.3million vehicels in Australia The order affects vehicles made by BMW, Ford, GM Holden, Mercedes Benz, Tesla, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, BMW, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Ferrari, GMC, Honda, Jeep, Lexus, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Toyota, Volvo and Hino Trucks. Everything you need to know about the Takata airbag recall WHAT'S THE PROBLEM? High levels of moisture penetrating the airbag can alight the propelling mechanism too quickly, causing metal fragments to explode outwards. There has been one death and one case of serious injury in Australia as a result of the faulty deployment of the airbags. Worldwide, there have been at least 23 deaths and more than 230 serious injuries reported associated with the airbags. Victims include Stephanie Erdman of Florida who said her life 'changed forever' when she lost part of her vision after a minor accident in her 2002 model Honda. In Minnesota in 2013 Shashi Chopra was left completely blind when the passenger-side airbag in her 2002 BMW deployed. In 2017 a Sydney man, 58, was the first Australian killed by the airbags after he collided with another car in Cabramatta. Other high-risk airbags will be determined by three factors: age, the location of the vehicle (in areas of high heat or humidity), and the location of the airbag in the vehicle. WHO PAYS? Vehicle manufacturers will be required to cover the full cost of replacement.

Michael Dunlop extends his Isle of Man TT record to 30 wins: ‘I just got my s**t together and got on with it'

The Ballymoney man had won the last six Supersport TT races on Yamaha R6 machinery, but he acquired a World Supersport Panigale V2 machine for 2025 and delivered the Italian manufacturer's first win at the TT since 1995, when Robert Holden won the Singles race. Dunlop, who was a Supersport winner on the Milwaukee Ducati at last month's North West 200, found himself over seven seconds down after the first lap of the three-lap race. However, he gradually reeled in leader Dean Harrison (Honda Racing UK) and went close to breaking his lap record for the class, recording a blistering speed of 130.313mph on the final lap. In the end, Dunlop was a dominant winner, pulling a gap of 10.229s over Englishman Harrison to open his account at TT 2025. It was a confidence-boosting end to the day for Dunlop, who had earlier missed out on a Superbike win by only 1.296s to Davey Todd. 'I think more importantly it's another manufacturer,' said Dunlop of his 30th win around the Mountain Course, where he holds the record for the most victories with different manufacturers – now seven in total after adding Ducati to his past wins for BMW, Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Paton. 'Obviously, the Milwaukee guys really wanted to make an effort with the Ducati and they wanted to win around the TT, and they had all faith in me to have a go. 'The boys have built a lovely wee bike. It was just hard to get used to the bike because it's a V-twin, but obviously the main thing for me is to win for all the boys and especially for Ducati. It's nice to get them back to the top.' Dunlop was left stung by his narrow defeat in the Superbike opener and was determined to come out with all guns blazing in the first of two Supersport races scheduled this week. 'I got my s**t together and got on with it. I just knew it kept coming,' he said. 'It was a bit like the big bike, we haven't had a lot of laps, especially here with a brand new motorbike. 'And obviously to win on a new motorbike I knew it was going to be hard with the little laps we've had in practice and the characteristics of the bike, but just big hats off to the lads. 'The wee bike is dinging away nicely – it just took me a lap to dial into it.' Harrison was 7.48s clear of Dunlop after the first lap but he was unable to match his rival's pace and says there is nothing more to come from his CBR600RR Honda. 'That's all it's got,' he said. 'We can't improve what we have. This is all we have here with us. 'That [Ducati] is a new-generation bike, we're 6mph down through the speed trap. We're not going to find any more power through the week, so we'll just do the same again in race two.' The duo were well clear of James Hillier on the Bournemouth Kawasaki, who was back on the TT podium for the first time since 2019. Hillier was more than 55 seconds down on race winner Dunlop, while Todd (Milenco by Padgett's Honda) claimed fourth. Josh Brookes (Jackson Racing Honda by Prosper2) and Rob Hodson (SMT Racing Yamaha) rounded out the top six ahead of James Hind (North Lincs Components Suzuki) and Dominic Herbertson (HRRC Gilbert Brown & Son Ducati). Paul Jordan from Magherafelt retired on the Jackson Racing Honda. The top ten was completed by 16-time TT winner Ian Hutchinson (MLav Racing Yamaha) and Conor Cummins (Burrows/RK Racing Ducati). Racing is set to continue today with the first Superstock race (10:45am) and the opening Supertwin race (2pm).
