Boxer Chavez Jr jailed in Mexico after US deportation
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum in her daily press conference said the 39-year-old been deported. She previously said there was a warrant for his arrest for charges of arms trafficking and organized crime, and that prosecutors were working on the case.
The Mexican attorney general's office declined to comment.
Chavez Jr, the son of a legendary former world champion boxer Julio Cesar Chavez, was detained by U.S. immigration authorities shortly after losing in a sold-out match to American influencer-turned-boxer Jake Paul.
Mexican prosecutors allege he acted as a henchman for the powerful Sinaloa Cartel, which Washington designated a foreign terrorist organization earlier this year.
Chavez Jr's lawyer and family have rejected the accusations.
Mexico's national arrest registry showed that the boxer was arrested at a checkpoint in the Mexican border city of Nogales at 11:53 a.m. local time, and transferred to a federal institution in Sonora's capital of Hermosillo. Chavez Jr was wearing a black hoodie and red sneakers, it said.
Chavez Jr won the WBC middleweight championship in 2011, but lost the title the following year.
His career has been overshadowed by controversies including a suspension after testing positive for a banned substance in 2009, and a fine and suspension after testing positive for marijuana in 2013.

From top to bottom, the SEC is arguably the most talent-rich league across several sports. With the start of the college football season right around the corner, the conference has released its 2025 Preseason Coaches All-SEC Football Team selections. The list is packed with household names in the college football world. Some of the more notable national standouts include Anthony (Texas), Ryan Williams (Alabama), and DJ Lagway (Florida). Names familiar to Aggie fans—despite now playing outside of Aggieland- include former Aggies Eli Stowers (Vanderbilt) and LT Overton (Alabama), along with high-profile flips Cam Coleman (Auburn) and Harold Perkins (LSU). As usual, Texas A&M remains one of the more perplexing programs in college football. Routinely ranked in the top ten in recruiting, the Aggies often find themselves in the Top 20 preseason rankings, only to finish 8–4 after dropping games they were favored to win. However, expectations feel more grounded this year, thanks to the foundation Coach Mike Elko has built in his short time in Bryan–College Station. In an era when players can transfer for any reason at nearly any time, Coach Elko has earned enough trust to retain several NFL-graded talents and maintain the core of his roster, an increasingly rare feat. He enters the season with a veteran squad at key positions like offensive line, running back, and linebacker. And where there are question marks, there's depth. That's reflected in the preseason All-SEC selections, with six Aggies earning honors: First Team The lone first-team Aggie, Moss, earned this recognition. The senior was well on pace for a 1,000-yard, 12–15 touchdown season before suffering a season-ending injury after nine games. He landed on the 2024 All-SEC Second Team and earned Offensive MVP honors at the team's awards banquet. Moss finished with 765 yards on 121 carries and 10 touchdowns. Second Team A transfer from Kansas, Reed-Adams started every game at right guard. He helped power an offense that averaged 195.5 rushing yards per game—second-best in the SEC. Though he received a solid draft grade, the graduate student chose to return for one final season and will serve as a team captain. Trey Zuhn III - Offensive Line Zuhn has demonstrated year-over-year growth since he arrived in 2021. As another veteran leader up front, he played a key role in A&M's top-30 rushing attack. In 2024, he earned SEC Offensive Lineman of the Week, landed on the All-SEC Third Team, and took home the Offensive Trenches Award at the team banquet. He'll also captain the 2025 squad. Chase Bisontis - Offensive Line Bisontis likely could've landed on the second team had he not missed three games due to injury. Like Zuhn and Reed-Adams, he played a key role in anchoring the ground game while helping protect the quarterback amid instability at the position. In 2023, he earned ESPN All-American and All-SEC Freshman honors. Will Lee III - Defensive Back Lee transferred in and immediately made his presence felt, starting all 12 regular-season games. At 6'3" with rangy arms, he posed a tough matchup for opposing receivers and ranked fifth in the SEC with 10 pass breakups. He finished with 39 tackles, 12 passes defended, and two interceptions—one returned for a touchdown. He earned a 2024 All-SEC Second Team spot and won the Defensive Skill award at the banquet. Third Team Taurean York - Linebacker What York lacks in size and speed, he more than makes up for with instincts and football IQ. A relative unknown heading into his freshman season, York grabbed the starting role and thrived. He earned spots on the ESPN and All-SEC Freshman teams and was named a Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Semifinalist. The team captain led A&M with 82 tackles—12th-best in the SEC—and finished with 83 tackles, 9.5 TFLs, 2.5 sacks, and an interception. Truck driver facing deportation after crash kills 3 on Florida Turnpike
A truck driver is facing homicide charges, as well as deportation, after state officials in Florida accused him of causing a multi-vehicle crash and killing three people, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced on Monday, Aug. 18. The deadly wreck took place on Tuesday, Aug. 12, in St. Lucie County, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles said in a news release. The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the two-vehicle crash along Florida's Turnpike, according to the release. The two-vehicle crash involved a minivan and a commercial semi-truck and trailer, officials said. A preliminary investigation revealed the driver of the commercial semi-truck recklessly and "without regard for the safety of others," attempted to make a U-Turn in an unauthorized location, the agency wrote, leading to the death of all three people in the minivan. USA TODAY reached out to state troopers for more information on Tuesday, Aug. 19, but has not received a response. It was not immediately known whether Singh had obtained an attorney for the criminal charges he faces. Truck driver involved in fatal crash 'crossed Mexico border in 2018' During the criminal investigation, and with the assistance of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the agency said troopers learned Singh entered the US illegally, "having crossed the Mexico border in 2018." Singh then obtained a commercial driver's license in California, the release continues. Under the federal authority delegated by ICE to troopers, the state police issued an ICE detainer, the agency said. Dave Kerner, the agency's executive director, released a statement following Singh's arrest, calling the crime while operating a commercial tractor-trailer "both shocking and criminal." "He will no longer be able to damage and destroy the lives of Floridians and visitors," Kerner said. "At the conclusion of his state charges, he will be deported." In a statement from the office of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin, she blamed the incident on California Gov. Gavin Newsom and his state's Department of Motor Vehicles for issuing Singh a license. 'This state of governance is asinine,' the statement reads.
