The great Villeneuve would have loved the nail-biting action at Canadian GP

Straits Times9 hours ago

What on earth, I found myself wondering on June 15 night as we waited and waited for the outcome of what had seemed like a gripping Canadian Grand Prix to be decided by the stewards. What would the great Gilles Villeneuve have made of the race held at the circuit named in his honour?
Well, just like us, he would have relished the five-way contest between George Russell, Max Verstappen, Kimi Antonelli, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris. The prospect of so many of the top cars battling it out in the final laps was simply nail-biting, especially as you sometimes get follow-my-leader races in which a DRS train develops. That might have been the case further back in a closely matched midfield, but you sensed here that anything might happen at the sharp end.

Dear ST reader, There is a realistic prospect of more record-breaking feats at the July 11-Aug 3 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore, as the swimming pool at the purpose-built facility is deeper than the temporary pool for the Paris Olympics, which means less water turbulence. Meanwhile, Welsh footballer Kai Whitmore, whose grandfather was born in Singapore, has expressed interest to play for the Republic. The 24-year-old midfielder, who plies his trade with English League Two side Newport County, was in town recently to find out more about the process. In other news, the Kallang Basin Swimming Complex and St Wilfred Sport Centre will close in the second half of 2025, with both sites possibly used for public housing. Powerboat racing-DJ Aoki's team wins in Dubrovnik as Lebron claims first E1 podium

DJ Steve Aoki's electric raceboat team surged to victory in the Adriatic over the weekend, claiming their second win of the season and leapfrogging Rafa Nadal's outfit in the E1 championship standings. Former Formula 1 test driver Dani Clos, a new addition to Aoki Racing Team for 2025, took the chequered flag in a tight finish at the E1 Dubrovnik Grand Prix, with Team Brady securing second place and NBA superstar LeBron James celebrating his first podium finish with Team AlUla in third. The victory unfolded against the backdrop of Dubrovnik's historic walls, where thousands gathered for Croatia's debut on the UIM E1 World Championship calendar, the series dedicated to all-electric powerboat racing. The result intensified the rivalry between Aoki's team and Nadal's, which could only manage fourth place despite qualifying strongly. Both teams have emerged as the dominant forces in the 2025 season as they vie for the "Champions of the Water" title, to be decided in Miami in November. The championship, which features teams owned by global celebrities including actor Will Smith and former footballer Didier Drogba, now heads to Italy's Lake Maggiore in late June for the midpoint of the season. The E1 World Championship is the first all-electric raceboat series sanctioned by powerboating's global governing body, the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM), and is designed to accelerate innovation in sustainable marine technology and coastal conservation. Alcaraz still in disbelief after Roland Garros triumph

FILE PHOTO: Spain's Carlos Alcaraz celebrates with the trophy after winning the men's singles final against Italy's Jannik Sinner in the French Open final, in Paris, June 8. REUTERS/Lisi Niesner/File Photo Carlos Alcaraz says he still looks back on his extraordinary French Open triumph over world number one Jannik Sinner with a sense of disbelief, as the Spaniard prepares to shift focus to his bid for a hat-trick of Wimbledon titles. The 22-year-old fought back from two sets down and saved three successive match points in an unlikely 4-6 6-7(4) 6-4 7-6(3) 7-6(10-2) victory against the Italian in a match that mesmerised the Paris crowd. "(There are) a lot of videos from that match, from that moment, match point down and I still watch it sometimes, and I still don't believe that I come back from that moment," Alcaraz told reporters on Sunday. "So sometimes it's difficult to realise that I'm in this position, that I won the French Open, watching the videos from 40-love, in that moment. So I'm still watching those videos." The five-times Grand Slam champion recharged his batteries with a short trip to Ibiza but is back in harness ahead of his campaign at Queen's Club, where he faces countryman Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in his opener on Tuesday. Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the season, runs from June 30 to July 13. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
