Bihar Assembly uproar continues on 4th day over voter list revision issue

Hans India24-07-2025
Patna: The fourth day of the Monsoon Session of the Bihar Assembly began with continued uproar by opposition MLAs, who are demanding a special discussion in the House on the ongoing voter list revision (SIR) in the state.
Mahagathbandhan MLAs arrived wearing black clothes, raising slogans inside and outside the Assembly, protesting alleged irregularities in the voter list revision.
The opposition alleges that the Election Commission of India, in collusion with the government, is conspiring to remove the names of the poor and disadvantaged voters from the voter list, impacting the upcoming elections. The issue has now escalated to the High Court and the Supreme Court.
The opposition leaders reiterated that the House proceedings will not continue until there is a dedicated discussion on SIR, demanding the withdrawal of the current voter list revision campaign.
Due to the continuous ruckus, question hour and member queries have not been addressed for the last two days, preventing public issues from being raised.
If protests continue for the day inside the House, questions from various departments listed for discussion may also remain unanswered.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister cum Finance Minister Samrat Chaudhary, who had presented the supplementary budget on July 21, said it will be discussed on the day. The Social Welfare Department's budget -- which has received the highest allocation in the supplementary budget -- is scheduled for detailed discussion.
On July 21, Samrat Choudhary had presented a supplementary budget exceeding Rs 57,946 crore in the Assembly. The state government will also present the CAG report in the House.
The voter list revision ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections has become a flashpoint between the ruling NDA and the opposition Mahagathbandhan.
While the government maintains that the revision process is necessary for fair elections, the opposition claims that the process is flawed, poorly timed during the rainy and farming season, and threatens to disenfranchise the poor and migrant voters.

"Reviewed, Removed": China's AliExpress Takes Down Lord Jagannath Doormat

Chinese e-commerce platform AliExpress has removed a controversial doormat featuring the image of Lord Jagannath from its website, following a wave of backlash. The item, titled "Lord Jagannath Mandala Art Mat Doorway Non-Slip Soft Water Uptake Carpet Krishna Jaganath Hindu Go," was priced at approximately Rs 787. Images showed a person standing on the mat with the deity's face printed on it. This was widely criticised as offensive and deeply disrespectful, especially in Odisha, where Lord Jagannath holds immense religious and cultural significance. "The item has been reviewed and removed," AliExpress said in a statement, "Community input helps us improve our platform and strengthen our content checks. Thank you for helping us create a safe and friendly online shopping experience." "We appreciate your report," they said. We appreciate your report. The item has been reviewed and removed. Community input helps us improve our platform and strengthen our content checks. Thank you for helping us create a safe and friendly online shopping experience. — AliExpress (@AliExpress_EN) July 31, 2025 The platform responded directly to a tweet by Congress MLA Sofia Firdous, who demanded immediate corrective action. The Barabati-Cuttack legislator wrote, "Strongly condemn the blasphemous act of selling doormats with the sacred image of Lord Jagannath on [AliExpress]. This is a grave insult to millions of devotees and a serious attack on cultural and religious sentiments. Immediate action must be taken to remove the listing and issue a public apology." The internet was not convinced. A user commented, "Why was it even there in the first place?" Another wrote, "Where is your public apology?" Someone said, "Don't play with the emotions of crores Odia's. Mahaprabhu is our heart and soul. So be careful for the future action." The incident also drew strong condemnation from other political leaders. Amar Patnaik, senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader and former MP, called the listing "shameless profanity" and "egregious". "I vehemently condemn the egregious act of selling doormats with the sacred image of Lord Jagannath on AliExpress. It is a desecration of the highest order, and those responsible must be held accountable." BJP leader Baijayant Jay Panda called the incident "unacceptable" and accused the platform of a "deeper conspiracy." "It is just the latest in a long line of foreign entities who have kept trying over centuries to belittle Sanatan Dharma & demean its followers," he said.

CM Kumar lays foundation stones for Rs 570 cr development projects in Muzaffarpur

Patna: With an eye on the upcoming Assembly elections in the state, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday laid the foundation stone for a series of development schemes worth approximately Rs 570 crore during his visit to Muzaffarpur district. The major projects include the construction of a rail overbridge and an RCC bridge, both expected to significantly improve connectivity and public safety in the region. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who arrived in Muzaffarpur by road, first inaugurated the work on a rail overbridge near Madipur Power House, to be constructed at a cost of Rs 167 crore. The bridge aims to alleviate perennial traffic congestion problems being faced by people and provide much-needed relief to commuters and ease access across the area. Following this, Nitish Kumar laid the foundation stone for an RCC bridge in the Madhurpatti area of Gaighat, to be built at a cost of Rs 24 crore. This location gained attention recently due to a tragic boat accident that claimed around a dozen lives. The new bridge is expected to offer a safe and permanent mode of crossing, reducing reliance on unsafe boat transport. In addition to these two high-impact projects, the Chief Minister also inaugurated five other development schemes, all focussed on enhancing infrastructure and civic amenities across Muzaffarpur district in years to come. Locals have welcomed the move, especially the RCC bridge in Gaighat, calling it a long-overdue solution to a persistent and deadly problem. The state government reiterated its commitment to the speedy implementation and completion of these projects, ensuring that they bring tangible benefits to the people. 'Our focus is on improving infrastructure, safety, and ease of movement for the people. These projects will contribute to the long-term development of Muzaffarpur,' CM Kumar stated during the event. Earlier on Wednesday, CM Kumar visited the Wanavar block in Jehanabad district and inspected several developmental projects. He also instructed the officials to expedite the ongoing projects to relieve people in the district.
