Arunachal Pradesh to shut 386 govt schools with zero enrolment
Itanagar: To ensure optimal utilisation of resources, the Arunachal Pradesh government has ordered the immediate closure of 386 government schools having zero enrollment, officials said on Tuesday.
Last year also, the Education Department of the Arunachal Pradesh government had also closed 600 schools, which were either non-functional or had zero enrolment.
Commissioner (Education) Amjad Tak in a notification said that in order to ensure optimal utilisation of resources, the Governor of Arunachal Pradesh ordered for immediate closure of 386 government schools having zero enrollment.
The teachers currently posted in these 386 schools are to be withdrawn and re-posted to other government schools where there is shortage of teaching staff, as per the Teacher Transfer and Posting Policy through the concerned Deputy Director of School Education.
"All the concerned Deputy Directors of School Education shall ensure timely issuance of posting/redeployment orders and updating the same in official records and UDISE (Unified District Information System for Education) Portal, accordingly," the notification said.
Another senior official of the School Education Department said that the 386 schools comprises primary, upper primary, middle, and secondary schools which have had no student enrolment this year.
Of the 386 schools, the highest number of 73 schools would be closed in West Kameng district, bordering Bhutan and Nagaland, followed by 50 schools in Papum Pare, 31 in West Siang, 28 each in Upper Subansiri and Siang, 23 in East Kameng, 22 in Kurung Kumey, 16 in Changlang, 15 in Upper Siang, 12 each in Pakke Kessang and Leparada and 11 in Tawang district, the official said.
Districts with fewer closures of schools include Kra Daadi (8), Shi-Yomi (7), Lower Siang, Tirap, Kamle and Anjaw (5 each), Capital Complex (4), East Siang (2) and one each in Namsai and Dibang Valley. Arunachal Pradesh, which shares international borders with China, Myanmar and Bhutan, has 26 districts.
According to the official, the decision was taken in line with the objective of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasised the consolidation of school infrastructure to enhance academic outcomes and resource efficiency. Nearly 600 government schools have already been shut down or merged with other schools in 2024.
Arunachal Pradesh has over 2,800 government-run lower primary, upper primary, secondary and higher secondary schools, with more than 7,600 regular teachers working in these schools.

Haryana to rebrand VCs as ‘Kulguru': Mahipal Dhanda
Haryana education minister Mahipal Dhanda on Friday said that the vice-chancellors (VCs) of all government universities in the state will now be referred to as 'Kulguru' instead of the current title 'Kulpati'. Dhanda, an MLA from Panipat Rural, said that an amendment to the University Act will be made to formalise this change. The announcement came during a one-day workshop on internship organised under the National Education Policy, 2020, by Haryana State Higher Education Council at JC Bose University of Science and Technology in Faridabad. Prof Som Nath Sachdeva, VC of Kurukshetra University (KU), was the guest of honour at the event. Dhanda also highlighted that Haryana is the first state in India to fully implement NEP. Prof Sachdeva, said that the university achieved a prestigious NAAC A++ grade and became the first to integrate NEP-2020 in all undergraduate, postgraduate and affiliated college programmes. Additionally, KU launched over 172 internship programmes through its virtual internship program portal (VIP), aligned with NEP. The university also introduced Apprenticeship-Embedded Degree Programs (AEDP) for courses such as BCA, Professional, Event Management, and Medical Lab Technology, starting this academic year.

The Union Minister Pradhan and CM Yadav also performed a ritual and inaugurated the hostel and staff quarters. In an X post, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan shared glimpses of the event and appreciated Navodaya Vidyalaya, Kendriya Vidyalaya and Sandipani Vidyalaya for working to create meritorious students under the National Education Policy 2020. He wrote, 'Today, along with Hon'ble Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav ji, Hon'ble Governor of Karnataka Thaawarchand Gehlot ji and other colleagues, inaugurated the new hostel and staff quarters of PM Shri School Navodaya Vidyalaya-2 in Alot, Ratlam and Sandipani Vidyalaya, Alot.' 75 Delhi govt schools to get PM Shri tag, smart upgrades
The Delhi government will relaunch 75 of its schools as CM-Shri schools with state-of-the-art infrastructure and experiential learning models, chief minister Rekha Gupta said on Friday. The initiative aims to transform the quality of education in government schools by blending modern technology with improved facilities. The CM, addressing a meeting with school principals and education department officials in Shalimar Bagh, said the revamped schools will feature thousands of smart classrooms, 100 language labs, and 125 digital libraries by the end of the year. The city government currently runs 1,060 schools, and the 75 CM-Shri campuses will be chosen from among these, based on their readiness for infrastructure and technological upgrades. 'Every child in Delhi deserves quality education. Our aim isn't merely to build schools, but to create an education system that plays a vital role in nation-building. These 75 CM-Shri Schools are a step towards delivering learning that surpasses even private institutions,' Gupta said. The criteria for selecting the 75 schools are still being finalised, but will likely hinge on the existing infrastructure, an official said. The CM also directed that basic amenities like clean toilets, drinking water, proper lighting, and comfortable seating be upgraded across its 1,060 schools on a need basis. She instructed the PWD's horticulture wing to green campuses with landscaping initiatives. Each CM-Shri school will also be equipped with smart boards, science and computer labs, and other digital tools. Emphasising the importance of teacher quality, Gupta announced regular training programmes and exposure to modern teaching methods. The CM further directed officials to provide targeted support for meritorious, underperforming, and differently abled students, ensuring inclusive education. She also announced laptops for 1,200 students who excelled in Class 10 and 12 board exams, and said the government is actively seeking CSR partnerships to bolster the initiative. Meanwhile, the Directorate of Education (DoE) has opened applications for transfers to CM-Shri schools for the 2025-26 session. Post Graduate Teachers (PGTs), Trained Graduate Teachers (TGTs), Primary Teachers (PRTs), and other staff with at least five years remaining before retirement can apply by June 9 via email. Interviews will be held on June 11 (TGTs) and June 12 (PGTs and others). An official said the National Education Policy (NEP) will be implemented across CM-Shri schools, alongside the integration of AI tools and language labs. Gupta, meanwhile, took aim at the former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, calling its education model 'artificial.' 'Despite the heavy propaganda, the ground reality was dismal. Even their most celebrated school buildings were poorly built — one constructed in 2018 deteriorated within two years. This exposes their so-called model as nothing more than a facade,' she said, adding that legal action would be initiated for irregularities in classroom construction flagged in the CAG report.
