'Astronomer now a household name': New CEO issues first statement
Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and the company's Chief People Officer Kristin Cabot were caught in a public storm as the two were featured on the jumbotron at the event, sharing a hug; once they saw themselves on the big screen, Cabot hid her face, and Byron ducked down.
Seeing their reaction, Chris Martin reportedly quipped, "Oh look at these two... either they're having an affair or they're very shy." With both parties reportedly married to other people, the moment fuelled viral memes, with brands cashing in on the controversy and sparked a fiery discussion online on privacy at public venues.
After the incident threw the company into the public spotlight, Byron resigned. While the company "begins a search for the next Chief Executive, Cofounder and Chief Product Officer Pete DeJoy continues to serve as interim CEO," a statement issued by Astronomer said.
After stepping into his new role, DeJoy who called the spotlight "surreal" issued his first statement as interim CEO. Read his full statement here:
"Over the weekend, I stepped into the role of Interim CEO at Astronomer, a company that I've proudly poured my entire professional life into helping build.
Over the past few years, our business has experienced incredible growth. What was once a mission to help companies with Apache Airflow has turned into so much more. We're privileged to sit at the center of our customers' data & AI strategy, powering data pipelines behind in-game analytics of your favorite sports team, LLM powered chatbots for customer support, training AI for self-driving cars, and every mission-critical process in between.
The events of the past few days have received a level of media attention that few companies—let alone startups in our small corner of the data and AI world—ever encounter. The spotlight has been unusual and surreal for our team and, while I would never have wished for it to happen like this, Astronomer is now a household name.
At Astronomer we have never shied away from challenges; a near-decade of building this business has tested us time and time again, and each time we've emerged stronger. From starting a software company in Cincinnati, Ohio, to keeping the lights on through the collapse of the bank that held all our cash, to scaling from 30 to 300 people during a global pandemic that demanded we do it all without ever being in the same room.
And yet, we're still here.
We're here because Astronomer is built by people who live to solve hard problems, stay late to fix what's broken, and care deeply about doing things the right way. We're here because our customers trust us with their most ambitious data & AI projects. And, most importantly, we're here because the mission is bigger than any one moment.
I'm stepping into this role with a wholehearted commitment to taking care of our people and delivering for our customers. Astronomer's foundation remains strong, built around the thriving Apache Airflow community. Our opportunity to build a DataOps platform for the age of AI remains massive. And our story is very much still being written.
To our team: thank you for your resilience & commitment to building something great. And to our community and customers: thank you for your trust. We won't let you down."

Gold inches higher as dollar weakens on Fed rate cut hopes
Gold prices edged higher on Thursday, helped by a weaker dollar on growing expectations of a Federal Reserve rate cut next month, while investors awaited U.S. President Donald Trump's nominations to the central bank's Board of Governors. FUNDAMENTALS * Spot gold added 0.1% at $3,372.97 per ounce as of 0057 GMT. U.S. gold futures gained 0.3% to $3,442.20. * The dollar index hovered near more than one-week low after a surprisingly weak U.S. jobs data last week triggered bets for Fed rate cuts from September. * Traders are now pricing in a 95% chance of a 25-basis-point cut next month, up from 48% a week ago, according to the CME Group's FedWatch Tool. * The Fed may need to cut rates in the near-term in response to a slowing U.S. economy, even though it remains unclear whether tariffs will continue to push inflation higher, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari said. * Meanwhile, Trump issued an executive order on Wednesday imposing an additional 25% tariff on goods from India, saying the country directly or indirectly imported Russian oil, adding to 25% tariffs already announced. * Gold, traditionally considered a safe-haven asset during political and economic uncertainties, tends to thrive in a low-interest-rate environment. * On Wednesday, Trump said that over the next few days he would likely nominate a candidate to serve the remaining months of a soon-to-be-vacant position on the Fed's Board of Governors, leaving the choice of a permanent replacement for a later date. * SPDR Gold Trust, the world's largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund, said its holdings fell 0.33% to 952.79 tonnes on Wednesday from 955.94 tonnes on Tuesday. * Elsewhere, spot silver was steady at $37.83 per ounce, platinum gained 0.2% to $1,336.74 and palladium rose 0.7% to $1,139.98. Witkoff and Putin meeting 'highly productive', Trump says
US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said the meeting between US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Russian President Vladimir Putin was "highly productive". He added that "great progress was made" and that he had updated some European allies on the details of the meeting. "Everyone agrees this War must come to a close, and we will work towards that in the days and weeks to come," he said on his Truth Social platform. But Washington still expects to impose secondary tariffs on Moscow's trading partners on Friday, a senior administration official told The National. In July, the US set a 50-day deadline for Moscow to stop hostilities, threatening to impose secondary tariffs on trading partners importing Russian fuel. Mr Witkoff's visit is viewed as a last-ditch effort to end the conflict ahead of a deadline on Friday. The administration official added that 'the Russians are eager to continue engaging with the United States'. Mr Putin's foreign affairs adviser said that the two men had a 'useful and constructive conversation' that focused on Ukraine as well as 'prospects for possible development of strategic co-operation between the US and Russia '. Mr Trump, who campaigned on ending the war that has raged since early 2022, has become increasingly frustrated with his counterpart as Moscow's forces advance in Ukraine and its bomb and missile strikes killed hundreds of civilians. Overnight on Tuesday, Russian forces hit a recreational centre in Ukraine's southern Zaporizhzhia region, killing two people and injuring 12, including two children, according to local authorities. On entering office, Mr Trump attempted a more conciliatory tone with his Russian counterpart, in contrast to his predecessor Joe Biden, who enacted punishing sanctions against Moscow over the conflict. But relations frayed following a series of meetings with Ukrainian and Russian officials that failed to bring the war to a halt.
