Karnataka buys land in Goa to build Kannada Bhavan after decades-long demand

Time of India30-07-2025
Belagavi: In a significant step toward fulfilling a long-standing demand, the Karnataka govt has purchased two acres in Goa for the construction of a Kannada Bhavan. The initiative aims to serve the linguistic and cultural needs of the Kannada-speaking community residing in the neighbouring state.
The project is being funded by the Karnataka Border Area Development Authority (KBADA). It was announced in the 2022–23 State Budget, following persistent appeals from Kannada organisations in Goa.
To chart out the next phase of the project, KBADA chairman Somanna Bevinamarad held a meeting in Goa on Wednesday. KBADA member Prakash Mattihalli, Siddanna Meti (Kannada Sahitya Parishad – Goa Border Unit), and other committee members, including Hanumant Reddy, Rajesh Shetty, and Shivanand Bingi, were present at the meeting, according to the release.
During the meeting, Bevinamarad confirmed that 11,571.2 sqft of land (survey No. 113/9) at Ambarame Matta in Cortalim Village, Vasco-Mormugao taluk, was acquired for the project.
"Kannadigas in Goa have been requesting a Kannada Bhavan for over four decades. Nearly six lakh Kannadigas reside in Goa. Responding to their long-pending appeal, the govt procured private land, and construction will begin soon," Bevinamarad said.

The proposed Kannada Bhavan will be a multi-purpose facility, including parking in the basement, a commercial complex (for rental income to support maintenance) on the ground floor, a dining hall and library on the first floor, a cultural hall with a seating capacity of 1,000 people on the second floor, and 10–15 VIP guest rooms for Kannadigas visiting the bhavan on the third floor.
The state govt initially sought land from the Goa govt, making several formal requests. However, with no positive response, Karnataka opted to purchase private land to proceed with the construction independently. The initiative was taken in response to continuous lobbying by the Akhila Goa Kannada Maha Sangha, among other Kannada organisations, for a dedicated cultural and community space in Goa.

BC protests by Congress in Delhi a smokescreen to hide failures: BJP

Hyderabad: Telangana state BJP President N Ramchander Rao on Wednesday termed 'Delhi protests' by the Congress party as a 'drama' enacted to deceive BC community in Telangana on the issue of 42 per cent reservations. Speaking to media persons at Ramagudam, Rao said it was a 'drama' in which Rahul Gandhi is a director and participants are actors. Rao alleged that reservations for BCs would be reduced to only 32 per cent if Revanth Reddy government provides 10 per cent reservations to Muslims. He reminded that it was Congress party which has made Kamareddy BC Declaration and introduced a BC reservation bill in the assembly. Then why Congress government is not able to implement it in Telangana, he asked. 'Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was also present in the meeting of Kamareddy BC declaration. Revanth Reddy should ask his counterpart about implementation of BC reservations in Karnataka instead of going to Delhi to make a drama,' he said and accused state government of blaming Centre on the issue of BC reservations when it is not able to implement it. 'The previous YS Rajasekhara Reddy government had provided 4 per cent reservation to Muslims in education and jobs and no mention of political reservations. This 4 per cent reservation issue is also pending in the court. But Congress and BRS parties have adopted appeasement policy and provided reservation in politics. As a result, in GHMC elections, Muslims got 35 out of 50 councillor seats, depriving genuine BC leaders from contesting elections,' he added. Rao alleged that Congress party is not sincere in implementing of 42 per cent reservations to BCs and was levelling baseless allegations against Modi government to cover up its failures.

Notably, pessimism surrounding the current price situation and inflation eased for the third straight survey round. The net response on price levels improved to -87.0 in July from -88.5 in May. Live Events While the net perception regarding current income improved to 2.1 (from 0.4 in May), expectations of future income remained broadly stable, with the net response rising marginally from 52.3 to 52.6. This indicates that while more households feel their incomes have improved recently, their expectations for the future remain steady. However, forward-looking optimism persisted as expectations for employment in the next one year saw an uptick in the net response to 31.0 from 29.8 earlier. Spending trends continued to reflect strong consumer confidence. The net response for current spending improved to 78.0, while expectations for future spending rose to 80.0. This was supported by gains in non-essential spending, which registered a rare positive net sentiment of 0.4, a notable shift from -3.4 in May, and future expectations on this front climbed to 15.0 from 13.8. Essential spending remained consistently high with a net response of 86.5 for current perception and 86.2 for future expectations. The RBI reiterated that the views expressed in the survey are those of the respondents and may not necessarily reflect the central bank's own stance.
