Myanmar junta chief attends Aung San memorial for first time since 2021 coup, daughter Suu Kyi remains jailed
Known affectionately as 'Bogyoke' (General), Aung San led Myanmar's battle for independence from Britain but was gunned down in July 1947, just months before his dream was finally realised.
His daughter Aung San Suu Kyi — who was two at the time of his death — became a democracy figurehead, Nobel laureate, and nemesis of the military.
Junta chief Min Aung Hlaing attended the wreath-laying ceremony yesterday at the Martyrs' Mausoleum in Yangon, the former capital, footage broadcast by state media MRTV showed.
He was joined at the monument next to the famous Shwedagon Pagoda by other top military generals commemorating Aung San's killing.
It is the first time Min Aung Hlaing has attended the event since he took power in 2021, and comes as his military fights anti-coup forces around the country and prepares to hold an election that has been criticised by international monitors.
Born in 1915 under British colonial rule, Aung San became leader of nationalist fighters in what was then Burma — making him the founder of Myanmar's military.
He remains a deeply revered figure and a core factor behind his daughter's enduring popularity.
She has been detained since the coup and spent her 80th birthday last month — and yesterday's remembrance of her father's killing — in junta detention serving a raft of lengthy sentences. — AFP

'JAIS is also conducting an investigation under syariah crimes and JAIS is also calling witnesses to provide statements to assist in the investigation of the case,' he said. He told reporters after officiating the Sinar Lestari Programme of the Islamic Economic Development Foundation of Malaysia (YAPEIM) in Penaga here which saw three heads of families received assistance to build their own new houses at the event. Therefore, Mohd Na'im said his party is waiting for a complete report from JAIS regarding the programme. The public was shocked by the revelation of a social media user regarding the e-Hati motivational programme run by a married couple which is said to contain lewd elements and suspicious beliefs. Following this, a married couple including the founder of the company known as eHati along with four other individuals were remanded for three days to assist in investigations into the organisation of the motivational programme. Earlier, YAPEIM together with strategic partners helped build houses involving an allocation of RM240,000 for three beneficiaries in the B40 group from the eKasih list in Penang. — Bernama

Amid rising cybercrime, Malaysia to sign UN's Budapest Convention, enhance international cooperation
KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 — Malaysia is in the process of joining the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime and plans to officially sign the UN treaty this October in Vietnam, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said today. He said the move is part of Malaysia's efforts to strengthen its fight against cybercrime by formalising cooperation through major international treaties. 'These treaties will enhance our cooperation with international enforcement bodies such as Interpol and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, especially in areas of digital evidence exchange, joint investigations, and cybercriminal extradition,' Saifuddin told the Dewan Rakyat. The minister also disclosed that a total of 46,086 investigation papers were opened in 2024 alone in connection with various cyber-related offences. These include both cyber-enabled and cyber-dependent crimes investigated under multiple laws, including the Penal Code, the Computer Crimes Act 1997, and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. To further bolster domestic enforcement, Saifuddin said the ministry and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have introduced key legislative amendments. He cited last year's revision of the Penal Code, which introduced Sections 424A and 424B, increasing penalties for certain offences from RM1,000 to RM10,000. These changes are aimed at deterring the misuse of "mule accounts" often used by scammers to transfer illicit funds, he said. 'These mule accounts sometimes involve the use of ATM cards, credit cards, or e-wallets belonging to other individuals, making them difficult to trace,' he said. Additionally, an amendment was made to the Criminal Procedure Code (Act 593) to empower sergeants — not just officers ranked inspector and above — to freeze or seize suspicious accounts. 'This allows earlier intervention in the financial layering process and helps stop the flow of scam proceeds at an earlier stage,' he added.

Ministers hail PM's special announcement, say it's all about the ‘rakyat'
KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 — Several federal ministers today thanked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for making a special announcement on a series of new government measures that will benefit Malaysians, including a one-off RM100 for all Malaysian adults and reduced RON95 petrol price. The ministers said these measures show the federal government's focus on the people of Malaysia and on reducing their financial burden.
