Shamrock Rovers have European 'know-how' to embrace Portuguese challenge of Santa Clara
The Hoops will have to do it the hard way against a team from one of the top leagues in Europe, however, former St Patrick's Athletic midfielder Byrne believes that Stephen Bradley's side have built up the vital experience to hand Santa Clara a tough challenge.
Rovers are one of three Irish clubs in Conference League action this week as League of Ireland champions Shelbourne take on Irish League holders Linfield, and the Hoops travel away to the Azores for Thursday's first leg.
As a result, the island of Ireland will be represented in this year's league phase of the competition, and the potential for two remains a strong possibility as Rovers will look to mirror last season's campaign and make it through to the 36-team format.
If Rovers are to have any chance of progressing, they will need to remain in the tie away from home and hope that they can see the job to completion back on their own turf at Tallaght Stadium in the second leg.
Rovers have previous in such matters and were again capable of reversing a first-leg defeat in the last round when they beat Ballkani 4-1 on aggregate.
"I just love the way Shamrock Rovers play their games in Europe," said Byrne, speaking on this week's RTE Soccer Podcast.
"They have the know-how now. And going away from home against Balkani and losing 1-0 in the manner that they did, to turn that around comprehensively in the second leg, it gives them so much confidence going into Santa Clara.
"And playing away first is so important," added Byrne.
"They can sit in, keep it tight as much as they can, and then bring it back to Tallaght. And like Stephen Bradley mentioned, it's the old cliche, but the 12th man was certainly there on Thursday night against Ballkani.
"I'm sure that if the game is very much alive coming into the home leg, it'll be a massive boost to the Shamrock Rovers players.
"So yeah, I do think Shamrock Rovers have a wonderful opportunity to go through."
Former Rovers goalkeeper Barry Murphy was cautiously optimistic regarding his old club's chances of progression, and he emphasised the importance of the performance needed in the first leg.
Murphy feels that Rovers made life difficult for themselves with a poor showing away from home in the last round and expects the Dublin club to play better this time around.
"The only thing is if they play the way they played against Ballkani away from home, they'll get beaten, because they were really poor that night," said Murphy.
"It's a very thin line between sitting back and soaking up pressure and getting them on the counter-attack, than going down and getting beaten.
"And you're coming up against a quality side in Santa Clara. When you look throughout their team, like 17 Brazilians in that squad, and that's enough to put fear into anyone.
"But listen, Santa Clara have lost their opening two league games, so if they can keep it tight over there and bring it back to Tallaght, they'll fancy beating anyone.
"Rovers have that know-how just to stay in the game because they really do fancy themselves at home. You look at the results last year in Europe, kept things tight and really good home form.
"I think going into this game, Rovers have that momentum; top of the league, into next round of the FAI Cup, changes made at the weekend, fresh legs coming in and they're further into their season.
"So when you're looking at that, I think they've got a real good chance if they get a decent result in that first leg."

FAI Cup draw LIVE updates as quarter-final pairings revealed
The draw for the FAI Cup quarter-finals takes place this morning, with all eight teams left in the hat dreaming of lifting the trophy at the Aviva Stadium in November. Defending champions Drogheda edged past Derry City at the Brandywell on penalties in a repeat of last year's final, with hopes of retaining the cup for the first time ever alive and well. There's plenty of Dublin interest in today's draw, with Shamrock Rovers and St Patrick's Athletic still in the hunt for the cup. Rovers haven't won the title since 2019, while Pats took home the trophy in 2023 when they beat Bohemians in front of over 43,000 people at the Aviva Stadium, the largest ever attendance for an FAI Cup final. Here are the teams left in the draw: Drogheda United (beat Derry 3-0 on penalties after 1-1 draw) Cork City (beat Waterford 2-1) Galway United (beat Salthill 4-0) Kerry (beat Cobh Ramblers 2-0) St Patrick's Athletic (beat Shelbourne 2-0) Finn Harps (beat Bray 3-1) Sligo Rovers (beat Bohs 1-0) Shamrock Rovers (beat Longford Town 2-1) Oisin Doherty The FAI Cup is heating up with only eight teams remaining in the competition ahead of this morning's draw for the quarter-final. There's been a frantic schedule of European and league matches recently, but play was paused over the weekend to make way for the FAI Cup third round. And there were some significant upsets, with top-tier teams Bohemians, Shelbourne, Derry City and Waterford all bowing out of the renowned competition. Shels manager Joey O'Brien even slammed his team's performance as the worst they've delivered since he took over from Damien Duff. However, O'Brien also expressed that he'd prefer it happened then, rather than in this Thursday's high-stakes European rematch with Linfield. There's a lot at stake as not only is the FAI Cup one of the most coveted trophies in Irish football, it also comes with the added perk of a valuable European ticket for next season. Can I watch it? Indeed, the draw will be broadcast live on the FAI's YouTube channel. The semi-final draw for the women's FAI Cup will follow immediately after, on the same link.

Troy Parrott, Kane, Mbappe… where Dubliner features among top scorers in 2025
Troy Parrott's staggering goalscoring exploits so far this season for AZ Alkmaar have put him in the company of European football's top strikers. The Ireland international has made a breathtaking start to the 2025/26 campaign, scoring nine goals in his first six games - six in four European ties and three in two Eredivisie games. Parrott now has 18 goals for the calendar year - and that has earned him a place among the 10 most prolific goalscorers of 2025 so far. Football365 has compiled a list of the most dangerous goalscorers of the year so far, including players that feature in Europe's 10 highest ranked leagues. Goals scored in all club competitions are tallied - and Parrott's 18 have him just one behind Bayern Munich's Harry Kane and Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski. Also featured on the list are Borussia Dortmund's Serhou Guirassy and Victor Osimhen of Galatasaray, while Real Madrid and France striker Kylian Mbappe leads the way on 29. You can view the full list here. Parrott's exploits so far this term have raised questions about his future - questions that AZ manager Maarten Martens is clearly eager to shut down. He was speaking after last weekend's 2-2 draw with FC Volendam when he was asked whether Parrott and fellow striker Mexx Meerdink would still be at the club after the window shuts at the end of the month. He issued a short and snappy response, indicating that he has no plans to off-load either of his forwards. 'We want to keep them both, and that's going to happen,' he said. Meanwhile, here's the list of Parrott's 18 goals so far in 2025, a tally he hopes to add to on Thursday when AZ Alkmaar travel to Levski Sofia for their Europa Conference League play-off first leg.
