Federal Gov't Includes State Input In Sulawesi Sea Border Discussions
Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin said the participation of state governments and relevant agencies in the negotiation process reflects the Federal government's 'whole of government' approach.
He further emphasised that the ministry continuously collaborates with stakeholders on matters concerning Malaysia's maritime boundaries.
'Discussions on maritime borders are based on legal and technical principles, carried out thoroughly and responsibly. The government always conducts detailed assessments of any proposed solutions,' he said during the parliamentary question and answer session today.
He was responding to a question from Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin (BN-Kinabatangan) about whether the Sabah government would be included in discussions on the Sulawesi Sea to safeguard the state's interests and ensure economic opportunities for the people of Sabah.
In reply to a supplementary question from Bung Moktar regarding the outcomes and impacts of these discussions, Mohamad explained that the talks cover not only maritime economic matters but also issues important to both Indonesia and Sabah.
'These include access to education, such as the Community Learning Centres (CLC) in Sabah, as well as cross-border trade, especially water trade between Sabah and Indonesia,' he said.
In response to a question from Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal (PN-Machang) about Indonesian businessman Mohd Riza Chalid, who is under investigation for corruption related to PT Pertamina's crude oil management between 2018 and 2023, Mohamad reiterated Malaysia's stance that no individual would be protected in the legal process.
'The key point is maintaining Malaysia's integrity and strengthening our cooperation with Indonesia. The issue involving him (Mohd Riza) is strictly a legal matter,' he said.

Ringgit opens firmer on softer US$, rate cut hopes
KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit opened firmer against the US dollar on Thursday, lifted by a softer greenback amid growing expectations of interest rate cuts by the United States Federal Reserve (Fed) in the coming months. At 8 am, the local note climbed to 4.2185/2260 against the greenback from Wednesday's close of 4.2235/2305. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said recent comments by Fed officials signalled that policy adjustments may be needed to address labour market weakness, reinforcing hopes of a rate cut at the next Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting. He noted that the upcoming FOMC meeting, scheduled for September 16-17, is expected to see the Fed Funds Rate lowered by 25 basis points. "This would likely be ringgit-positive, as a Fed rate cut would narrow the interest rate differential with the Overnight Policy Rate (OPR). "In light of current market conditions, the ringgit is expected to trade between 4.21 and 4.22 against the US dollar today,' he told Bernama. Meanwhile, the ringgit was mostly lower against a basket of major and regional currencies in early trade. It slipped against the Japanese yen to 2.8654/8707 from 2.8570/8619 on Wednesday, weakened versus the British pound to 5.6342/6442 from 5.6160/6253, and declined against the euro to 4.9192/9279 from 4.8929/9010. The local unit also fell against the Singapore dollar to 3.2824/2885 from 3.2806/2863 and depreciated vis-à-vis the Thai baht to 13.0402/0715 from 13.0291/0567. GENERAL KUALA TERENGGANU, Aug 7 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) made a strong showing at the 2025 Terengganu Media Appreciation Ceremony yesterday, emerging victorious in three of the five main categories contested. Bernama Terengganu Bureau journalist Balqis Jamaludin won the Best Digital Media News Award for her report titled Pemuda Ikat Tong Dram Bawah Katil Untuk Keselesaan Bapa Terlantar Sakit, earning her a plaque, certificate and RM1,500 cash prize. Part-time photographer Mohd Syafiq Ambak was named the winner of the Best Print Media Photo Award for his photo Katil Terapung, while photographer Mohd Khairul Fikiri Osman secured third place in the same category with his photo Rezeki Banjir. Mohd Syafiq received a plaque, certificate and RM1,500 in cash, while Mohd Khairul Fikiri took home a plaque, certificate and RM500. The prizes were presented by Terengganu Information, Dakwah and Syariah Empowerment Committee chairman Dr Muhammad Khalil Abdul Hadi. Additional water tariff audit mechanism focus of Dewan Rakyat today
KUALA LUMPUR: The monitoring and audit mechanism for the additional revenue from water tariff adjustments will be a key focus of the Dewan Rakyat sitting on Thursday (Aug 7). This was promised by state water operators for the purpose of repairing and developing water supply infrastructure. According to the Order Paper on the Parliament portal, the question is being raised by Datuk Mohd Isam Mohd Isa (BN-Tampin) to the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation during Minister's Question Time. Mohd Isam also wants to now what action will be taken against operators who fail to meet key performance indicators (KPIs) after receiving the benefits of the tariff adjustment.
