Skubal's first complete game helps Tigers beat Guardians, avoid four-game sweep
DETROIT — Tarik Skubal gave up two hits and matched a career high with 13 strikeouts in his first professional complete game, Zach McKinstry had a two-run homer in a five-run fourth inning and the Detroit Tigers beat the Cleveland Guardians 5-0 Sunday to avoid a four-game sweep.
The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner was perfect through five innings and finished with a nearly flawless performance. He had a baserunner for the first time after Will Wilson doubled on the second pitch of the sixth.
Skubal (5-2) gave up only one more hit and hit one batter with a pitch in a masterful, 94-pitch outing that included just 22 balls. It was the eighth complete game in the major leagues this season and fifth individual shutout.
Logan Allen (2-3) allowed a season-high five runs — four earned — five hits and four walks over 3 2/3 innings.
Justyn-Henry Malloy hit a leadoff single and scored on McKinstry's third homer. Javier Báez followed with a double and came home on Gleyber Torres' double. Allen's throwing error allowed Detroit to take a 5-0 lead.
Cleveland kept leadoff hitter Steven Kwan out of the lineup for the first time this season. First baseman Carlos Santana was scratched with tightness in his left leg.

White Sox give Robert more room to work on his adjustments at the plate
Associated Press CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox are going to rest Luis Robert Jr. for a couple days to give the slumping slugger more room to work on some changes at the plate. First-year manager Will Venable said he is planning to keep Robert out of the lineup on Tuesday and Wednesday against Detroit. 'He'll be available, but not in the starting lineup, just to give (him) an opportunity to really dial in some of these adjustments without just feeling the pressure of having to go out there and perform,' Venable said. 'So he's in a good spot physically. And just want to give him a couple days here to lock in some of these adjustments.' The 27-year-old Robert is 1 for 20 with 10 strikeouts and three walks in his last seven games. He is batting a career-low .177 with five homers and 20 RBIs in 55 games this season. The last-place White Sox had lost seven of eight going into Tuesday night's game against the Tigers. Michael A. Taylor replaced Robert in center field. Venable said Robert responded positively to the idea of taking a couple days off. 'He is putting in a ton of work and working extremely hard all throughout the day to try and get this thing right,' Venable said. 'He agreed that it would be a good idea just to press pause on the games, just for a couple of days here.' Robert had a major league-high 21 steals going into Tuesday's action, and he also plays strong defense in center. But he hasn't been able to find his swing at the plate. An All-Star in 2023, Robert has been playing through some right knee soreness. But Venable said he doesn't think it has been limiting him in any way. 'There's some soreness, but I think that it's not more than any soreness that all these guys feel during the course of the summer and playing hard out there every day,' he said. The White Sox made a move with their pitching staff on Tuesday, placing right-hander Jonathan Cannon on the 15-day injured list with a lower back strain. Right-hander Caleb Freeman was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte. The 24-year-old Cannon was tagged for five runs in three innings in a 13-1 loss to Detroit in the series opener on Monday night. He is 2-7 with a 4.66 ERA in 10 starts and two relief appearances this season. 'Got some imaging done and they're continuing to evaluate it,' Venable said. Tigers players combine for jaw-dropping catch on pop out
It's been a fairytale start to the season for the Tigers, and an unbelievable tip-drill catch Monday proved the magic in Detroit remains alive and well. With the Tigers up 8-0 in the fifth inning of an eventual 13-1 win over the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field, Chicago right fielder Joshua Palacios lifted a foul pop-up near the edge of the third-base dugout. Detroit catcher Dillon Dingler tracked the ball and attempted a sliding catch, but the ball ricocheted off his mitt. Sure enough, the it popped right into the glove of third baseman Zach McKinstry, who was positioned a few feet away. A gift from the baseball gods? A spectacular display of teamwork and hand-eye coordination? Perhaps a little of both for the Tigers, who have the best record in baseball (40-21) and a 6 ½ game lead on the second-place Guardians in the AL Central. Series Preview: Rays vs Rangers
Fresh off of a series split with the Houston Astros, the Tampa Bay Rays travel back home to Tampa where they'll take on the other team from the Lone Star State, the Texas Rangers in a three game set. The Rays enter play on Tuesday with a 30-29 record and have won seven of their last 10; they are 6.5 games back of the New York Yankees for the division lead and 2 games back in the Wild Card chase. Advertisement Meanwhile, the Rangers are 29-31 and have lost six of their last 10 games but they did just take two of three against the St Louis Cardinals. Texas is now four games back of the Seattle Mariners in the AL West and are 3.5 games back in the Wild Card. These two teams met up earlier this season for a three game series in Texas in which the Rangers swept the Rays. Since then, the trio of Josh Smith, Josh Jung, and Wyat Langford have emerged as the top players on the team with each player producing around 1.3 fWAR and 114 wRC+. The veterans have struggled with Adolis Garcia, Jonah Heim, and Marcus Semien all performing well below league average and Joc Pederson (currently on the IL) looking like a disastrous free agent signing. The starting pitching has been fantastic with a trio of arms, Nathan Eovaldi, Tyler Mahle, and Jacob deGrom, all providing ace-like results. In the bullpen, Chris Martin, Hoby Milner, and Robert Garcia have all been great as well. The Rays will miss deGrom and Eovaldi's turn in the rotation fortunately, but do have to face Mahle.
