Former Muda Sec-gen Freed Over Charge Regarding LCS Protest Rally
Magistrate Farah Nabihah Muhamad Dan ordered Amir Hariri to be freed following an application by the prosecution, represented by Deputy Public Prosecutor Anis Wahidah Mohamad.
The prosecution had previously requested that the case against Amir Hariri be withdrawn, following the Federal Court's ruling that Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 was unconstitutional.
"After hearing the submissions from both parties and the Federal Court's ruling, as well as the fact that the cas has been remitted to this court for decision by the High Court, besides the prosecution having not yet received an order to re-prosecute the accused, the court ordered that the accused be acquitted and discharged," said the Magistrate.
The court also ordered that the RM4,000 bail be returned. In today's proceedings, Amir Hariri was represented by lawyer Rajsurian Pillai.
On July 1 this year, the Federal Court ruled that Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act, which provides punishment for an organiser who fails to give five days' notice to the police before holding an assembly, is unconstitutional.
The court then ordered that Amir Hariri's case be returned to the High Court for a fair and prompt resolution. Amir Hariri is charged, as the organiser, with failing to notify the police five days before holding the protest rally that was held in front of the Sogo Complex, Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, here at 2 pm on Aug 14, 2022.
The charge was brought under Section 9(1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, which provides a maximum fine of RM10,000 upon conviction.

Pakistani among 5 arrested for rubber latex smuggling in Perak
IPOH: A Pakistani national was among five people detained by the General Operations Force (GOF) for involvement in rubber latex smuggling activities over the past two months. Northern Brigade GOF commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner Shahrum Hashim, said they were arrested at 2.30am on Friday during Op Intra. "We also seized over 35,400kg of rubber latex, a tanker truck, as well as various machinery and equipment used to transfer the rubber latex. "The operation was carried out by the Intelligence Branch of the GOF Northern Brigade, with assistance from the Malaysian Rubber Board (MRB), Taiping Municipal Council, and Taiping district police headquarters," he said. He added that the operations team tracked a tanker truck carrying rubber latex from Kedah to a premises in Taiping, where the suspects, aged between 32 and 59, were transferring the rubber latex using hoses. "At the premises, they transferred the rubber latex using hoses into an IBC tank (bulk storage tank) with a capacity of 1,000kg. "An inspection found that the tanker truck driver had sold 900kg of rubber latex, using a trick by replacing the weight of the sold latex by placing several weights on the body of the tanker. "This was done so that the customer receiving the rubber latex would not notice the reduction in weight during the re-weighing process," he said in a statement today. He added that the total value of the seizure was estimated to be more than RM789,000. "The Pakistani man detained was found to have violated the conditions of his work permit, an offence under Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. "He was handed over to the police, while the other four detainees and the seized items were handed over to the MRB for further investigation," he said. The case is being investigated under the Malaysian Rubber Board Licensing and Permit Regulations 2014, namely Regulation 3(1)(a) and Regulation 7(1)(f). He added that fines and licence cancellations could be imposed by the MRB if a breach of licence conditions is proven.

Indonesian man killed when hit by car while crossing road
SEREMBAN: An Indonesian man died after being hit by a car at KM 238.4 (North) of the PLUS Ayer Keroh-Senawang Highway on Saturday morning (Aug 9). He was believed to be crossing the road from the emergency lane. Rembau deputy police chief DSP Azmi Ali said the victim, the 32-year-old lorry attendant, was pronounced dead at the scene at 8.18am due to severe head and body injuries. He said initial investigations found that the lorry driver had stopped his vehicle in the emergency lane due to a flat tyre. The victim then got down for the lorry and attempted to cross the road, but was hit by a luxury car driven by a 56-year-old man. Both the lorry driver and the car driver were not injured, he said in a statement on Saturday. Azmi said the body was sent to the Rembau Hospital Forensic Unit for a post-mortem, and the case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. – Bernama

Penang aims for RM156 bln GDP by 2030 with digital economy plan
GEORGE TOWN: Penang aims to boost its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from RM116 billion in 2023 to RM156 billion by 2030 under the newly launched Digital Economy Master Plan (DEMP) 2025-2030. State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the plan targets raising the digital economy's contribution to 35 per cent of Penang's GDP by 2030. The state also aims to attract RM20 billion in digital investments, including in integrated circuit design, and RM130 billion in advanced semiconductor manufacturing. Zairil added that the plan includes socio-economic goals such as increasing median household income by 17 per cent to RM7,700 by 2030. It also seeks to create 50,000 new digital jobs and upskill 30 per cent of the workforce. 'The Penang DEMP 2025-2030 is not just a document, it is a blueprint for action, a call to build a connected, competitive and inclusive digital Penang,' he said. The plan aims to transform civil service delivery, increase digital-ready businesses, and position Penang as a hub for emerging technologies. Other targets include reducing energy intensity by 25 per cent and increasing renewable energy usage to 10 per cent by 2030. Zairil noted that the DEMP is structured around four strategic pillars: Digital Government, Digital Economy, Digital Society, and Digital Foundation. These pillars are supported by 16 initiatives to ensure Penang achieves its vision and strategic goals. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the DEMP serves as a long-term roadmap to position Penang as a digital-first economy. He emphasised the plan's focus on innovation, infrastructure, talent development, and inclusive digital access. 'The digital economy plays a vital role in our economic resilience, contributing significantly to our services sector, which adds up to 50 per cent of the state's GDP annually,' Chow said.
