Anwar Positions Malaysia, ASEAN As Leading Voices Of Global South

KUALA LUMPUR, May 20 (Bernama) -- As chair of ASEAN, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is clearly asserting Malaysia's position – and that of the regional grouping – as key players in the Global South and a rising force to be reckoned with, demanding a global shift from the dominance of bipolarity to equitable power-sharing through multipolarity.
Throughout his visits from South America to Southeast Asia, and most recently to Russia, the Prime Minister's clear message has been for deeper South-South collaboration to consolidate economic and political influence, enabling these nations to carve out their own destinies rather than be dictated to by the North or developed countries.
Anwar's call for a stronger Global South is therefore timely, as emerging economies grow in stature and influence, seeking a greater say in shaping the global economic and political agenda.
Given that the Global South represents 85 per cent of the world's population and accounts for more than 40 per cent of global gross domestic product (GDP) – a share that is only expanding – its call for equity is highly justified.
As part of this strategy, Malaysia is now one of the nine partner countries in BRICS, an informal grouping of emerging economies. Its membership is fast expanding from the original five – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates became official members in 2024, giving the grouping greater clout in undertaking economic initiatives.
Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said that the other driving force behind Malaysia's Global South push is the principle of a shared future – a concept that has been well received by fellow leaders.
Speaking to Malaysian media during his recent visit to Russia, where he met President Vladimir Putin, the Prime Minister said Malaysia is – and will continue to be – focused on broadening its regional and global partnerships amid rising geopolitical realignments.

Price war looming for the glove industry

PETALING JAYA: A price war may be on the horizon for the glove industry as Chinese manufacturers accelerate overseas expansion, according to Maybank Investment Bank (Maybank IB) Research. This spells fresh headwinds for Malaysian glove makers, which account for a significant share of the world's rubber glove supply and are already grappling with a challenging market environment. 'With China players increasingly deploying overseas capacity to penetrate the U.S. market more effectively, the competitive landscape is turning more aggressive, especially after 2025. In our view, a price war is highly likely shaping up an over-supplied gloves market,' Maybank IB said in a report. According to the research firm, new capacity from a major China glove maker is expected to come online by end-2025. 'We understand that the China glove maker has started marketing to U.S. customers, offering upcoming capacity from its overseas plants in Vietnam and Indonesia at average selling prices (ASPs) of US$16–17 per 1000 pieces (k/pcs) with deliveries starting from November 2025 onwards. For context, the ASPs of Malaysian glove makers are US$18–19/k pcs. Maybank IB said while this may be part of the China glove maker's marketing strategy, pricing could still adjust based on demand, tariffs and counter-moves by Malaysian glove makers. 'The latest news nonetheles,s reaffirms our Negative stance on the sector. 'Competition is clearly intensifying, with more capacity from China (targeting non-U.S. markets and its overseas plants focusing on the US market.' It said although the actual supply and timeline from these overseas plants remain uncertain, any meaningful ramp-up will likely exert pressure on pricing and margins. 'A price war appears increasingly likely, in our view.' 'Separately, we believe the upcoming results (of glove manufacturers) could be weak mainly due to weakening US dollar currency versus the ringgit.'

The largest gathering of Malaysian media practitioners, themed 'New Era Journalism: Balancing AI and Ethics', is organized by the Ministry of Communications through Bernama as the implementing agency. The climax event today will also see the presentation of the Hawana 2025 Special Award and the Hawana 2025 Award by the Prime Minister to prominent journalists as a tribute to their contributions in the field of national journalism. The Prime Minister will also present contributions from Tabung Kasih@Hawana to three veteran journalists facing health issues, as a symbol of concern for the plight of media personnel who once coloured the nation's journalism landscape. The prestigious event will see Anwar present prizes to the winners of the Hawana-DBP 2025 Pantun Festival, which was held successfully on May 31, with winners taking home RM3,000 in cash, along with a trophy and a certificate of appreciation. This prestigious event marks the culmination of Hawana 2025, which runs from June 13 to 15, bringing together various programs and initiatives specifically for the media fraternity and media industry experts. The Hawana 2025 celebration continues with various meaningful activities, including media sports events featuring traditional games, as well as a roadshow to premier polytechnics in Selangor, Perak, and Johor to foster interest among the younger generation in the world of journalism and media. Before the climax event, the Hawana 2025 Forum will take place at Dewan Tun Hussein Onn at 9 am today, discussing the topic "Malaysian Media Council: Regulator or Media Protector"? followed by a technology sharing session titled "AI & Media: Tool, Threat or Opportunity"? The forum, jointly organised by Bernama and the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI), also serves as an important platform for the Protem Committee of the Malaysian Media Council (MMM) to voice their views on the direction of the industry post the approval of the MMM Bill 2024 in Parliament last February. Meanwhile, at the concourse of Sunway Putra Mall, the Hawana 2025 Carnival is still ongoing on its second day with various exciting activities, including casual talks with agencies, quiz, guest artist performances, colouring activities, meet-and-greet sessions, as well as forums and workshops related to creative writing, photography, podcasts, and media literacy. May 29 was gazetted as National Journalists' Day in conjunction with the publication of the first edition of the Utusan Melayu newspaper on May 29, 1939, to celebrate the contributions and services of media practitioners and veteran journalists in the development of the nation. Hawana 2025 also received support and cooperation from nearly 100 strategic partners.
