Govt celebrates efforts to empower women
Sukhdev Hemnani stated that Pakistan Peoples Party-led Sindh Government draws its inspiration from the life and teachings of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto - the world's first Muslim Prime Minister who broke barriers for all the women of Pakistan and provided this country a feminist leadership that opened a gateway of educational and work opportunities for women.
Highlighting Sindh Government's commitment to the cause of women empowerment, Sukhdev Hemnani said that Sindh has enacted significant legislation aimed at strengthening protections around women that includes: Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Act 2013; Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act 2013; Sindh Commission on the Status of Women Act 2015; Sindh Maternity Benefits Act 2018; Sindh Women Agricultural Workers Act 2019 etc.

KARACHI: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Karachi Ameer Monem Zafar Khan said people in Sindh are compelled to buy even basic necessities, ie, from water to education, during the 17-year rule of the Pakistan Peoples Party. Addressing a press conference at Idara Noor-e-Haq, the JI Karachi headquarters, on Saturday, Monem Zafar criticised the Sindh Assembly for approving a 190 percent increase in lawmakers' salaries while, according to him, offering nothing meaningful for the common man. He said education had become one of the most expensive commodities under the PPP government's policies, noting that only two public sector schools are available for every 100,000 people in Karachi, compared with 145 for the same population in some rural areas of the province. He added that around 27,000 out of 37,000 schools in Sindh have no electricity, 15,000 lack drinking water, and 11,000 are without washrooms. Monem also criticised the allocation of 117 self-sponsorship and 47 self-finance seats at NED University, calling it a blow to merit. He said Karachi faces a worsening water shortage, accusing the provincial government and mayor of issuing contradictory statements over the Hub Canal 2 project. Sherry Rehman condemns India's ban on Kashmiri literature
Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Vice President and Senator Sherry Rehman on Saturday condemned the Indian government's ban on Kashmiri historical and resistance literature, terming it 'the worst example of fascism.' In a statement, Rehman said the move was a direct attack on the intellectual freedom of Kashmiris and reflected what she described as India's undemocratic ambitions. She remarked that suppressing history does not erase facts and that silencing free expression exposed 'fascist tendencies.' The PPP leader alleged that New Delhi's policies were pushing Kashmiri youth into 'intellectual slavery' and that such bans were damaging India's global reputation. She added that every attempt to suppress the truth has failed in history, and 'India will fail too,' asserting that confiscating books was an attempt to erase Kashmiri identity, which could not be achieved through bans. The raids came after the government accused the writers of propagating "false narratives" about Kashmir, "while playing a critical role in misguiding the youth" against the Indian state. "The operation targeted materials promoting secessionist ideologies or glorifying terrorism," police said in a social media statement. "Public cooperation is solicited to uphold peace and integrity," it said. Authorities also seized Islamic literature from bookshops and homes after a similar directive in February.

PTV staff unpaid for months amid alleged plan to sell properties: Murtaza
Listen to article Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Hassan Murtaza alleged that Pakistan Television (PTV) is facing an artificial financial crisis, claiming the situation has left employees without salaries for several months. In a statement, Murtaza accused the government of deliberately weakening the state broadcaster as part of a plan to privatise its valuable properties. He alleged that the privatisation lobby is targeting PTV's real estate assets, worth trillions of rupees, and warned of possible building auctions. He said delays in salaries and pensions were unnecessary and linked to the removal of the Rs35 PTV fee from electricity bills. Murtaza also held the Minister for Information and the PTV managing director responsible for what he described as the broadcaster's near-bankruptcy. The PPP leader criticised the privatisation of Pakistan Steel Mills and other state-run enterprises, terming it detrimental to workers and aimed at benefiting specific groups. Read: State TV spent nearly Rs140m on power bills Earlier, state-run Pakistan Television Headquarters racked up electricity bills exceeding Rs138.94 million over the past five fiscal years, according to official figures submitted to the National Assembly. According to a written response submitted by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in the NA, PTV's electricity expenditure has steadily risen each year, with a total of Rs138,936,472 spent from 2020-21 to 2024-25. In the fiscal year 2020-21, the electricity bill stood at Rs17,287,399, which increased to Rs24,045,382 in 2021-22, followed by Rs28,895,833 in 2022-23. The upward trend continued in 2023-24, when Rs37,693,235 was spent. Although the figure slightly decreased in 2024-25, it still amounted to Rs31,014,623. The cumulative total over the five years came to Rs138,936,472.
