Staying alive during the 100 deadliest days, what the state wants for you

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — State law enforcement is preparing for the end of the 100 Deadliest Days by focusing on stopping drug and alcohol related deaths on Utah roads.
The Utah Highway Patrol is making their final push to urge drivers to find a sober ride.
Over 250 extra DUI enforcement shifts will be worked statewide until Labor Day. To make it happen, nearly 50 different Utah law enforcement agencies are chipping in to make it happen.
'We don't want to go out there and particularly make more DUI arrests. We want people on the front end to make better choices that way. Law enforcement doesn't have to go out there and make these DUI arrests,' said Lt. Cameron Roden with the Utah Highway Patrol.
Police team up every year nationally for the 'Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over' campaign to stop drinking and driving.
'Here in Utah, we want people to lean on their networks and their loved ones. If you're out drinking, whether that be at a bar or a friend's house or wherever it may be,' said Jason Mettmann, Highway Safety Office Communications Manager.
The campaign aims to raise awareness ahead of the Labor Day holiday and inform the public that extra DUI enforcement will be happening statewide. Last year, 136 individuals died on Utah roads due to a driver impaired by drugs and/or alcohol. Alcohol-related crashes in Utah are 15 times more likely to be fatal compared to other crashes. Preliminary data from 2025 shows 26 of the 149 fatalities were related to drug or alcohol use.
'That's a lot of individuals that are affected by these types of crashes. So it's something that we want to get these messages out there heading into the fall and winter months,' Lt. Roden said.

Mass shooting at NYC lounge leaves at least 3 dead, others injured; suspects at large

A mass shooting at a crowded lounge in New York City left at least three people dead and eight others injured as police search for multiple suspects, authorities said Sunday morning. Gunfire erupted around 3:30 a.m. at Taste of the City in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn after a dispute took place, NYPD Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said during a news briefing. Officers responded within minutes to multiple 911 calls and found 11 gunshot victims ranging in age from 27 to 61, Tisch said. Three victims, two males aged 27 and 35, and a third male of an unknown age, were pronounced dead. The remaining eight victims were being treated at local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, Tisch said. Tisch said investigators believe there were multiple shooters, though no suspects were in custody as of Sunday morning. "We have the lowest number of shooting incidents and shooting victims seven months into the year that we've seen on record in the city of New York," Tisch told reporters. "Something like this is, of course, thank God, an anomaly and it's a terrible thing that happened this morning, but we're going to investigate and get to the bottom of what went down." Investigators were canvassing available CCTV footage around the lounge and discovered at least 36 shell casings at the scene. A firearm was recovered near the scene, and police are investigating whether it was used in the shooting. No further details were immediately provided.
