Meghalaya BSF launches ‘Operation Alert' along India-Bangladesh border

Shillong: Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya Frontier launched 'Operation Alert' along the India–Bangladesh border in Meghalaya from from Aug 10 to 16 to ensure foolproof security in the run-up to the Independence Day.
The operation is being carried out in close coordination with the State Police and other law enforcement agencies.
"The BSF has deployed additional troops in forward border locations and senior officers from the Frontier Headquarters and Sector Headquarters have moved to the border and are supervising the operation," a statement issued by the BSF Meghalaya Frontier Headquarters here said on Tuesday.
"The operation involves intensified area domination, round-the-clock patrolling, surprise 'naka' checks and riverine patrols to plug gaps in the border.
Special emphasis is placed on countering cattle smuggling, contraband movement, and illegal crossings. Vulnerable routes — both land and riverine — are under continuous surveillance through coordinated ground and water patrols, with night vision equipment and mobile patrol teams pressed into service," the BSF said.
Inspector General, Frontier Headquarters, BSF Shillong, OP Upadhyay, who is presently in the border, said 'Operation Alert' reflects the force's "commitment to safeguarding national security during the festive season and preventing any disruption by inimical forces".
The operation will remain in force till Aug 16.

Mumbai, Aug 13 (PTI) More than 14,000 police personnel, including officers and members from specialised units, will be deployed in Mumbai on Independence Day to ensure peaceful celebrations and maintain law and order, officials said on Wednesday. The police force has mobilised its personnel for security arrangements in view of the 69th Independence Day celebrations in the metropolis on Friday, an official said. Besides flag hoisting, police are expecting multiple public processions on August 15 to mark the occasion, he said. To maintain strict vigil at key sites, installations and facilitate peaceful Independence Day celebrations in the financial capital, more than 14,000 police personnel will be out on streets, according to the official. Besides them, personnel from Force One, SRPF (State Reserve Police Force), Quick Response Teams, Riot Control Police and Home Guards will be deployed at important places, he added. National Security Guards to train anti-terror squad of Puducherry police

The capabilities of the anti-terror squad of the Puducherry police is set to get enhanced significantly with specialised training being offered by the National Security Guards (NSG), the country's elite counter terrorism force, as part of a Memorandum of Understanding reached between the territorial police and the NSG. The agreement was signed during an event held at the Police Headquarters, under which the NSG will provide structured and specialised training to handle anti-terror operations, including handling of improvised explosive devices, bomb disposal, hostage rescue, tactical driving and managing of drones. Commenting on the MoU, Director General of Police Shalini Singh said the collaboration with NSG would significantly improve interoperability, ensure a faster and more coordinated response in crisis situations by the Puducherry police. It would also help in strengthening the Union Territory's security architecture, she said. 'The MoU marks an important milestone in enhancing the operational preparedness of Puducherry police to effectively respond to threats from terrorists. We look forward towards benefitting from the NSG's rich experience and specialised capabilities in counter-terrorism measures,' she said. According to a release issued here, the partnership paves way for joint national and zonal-level exercises, exchange of expertise, sharing of training infrastructure and periodic reviews to adapt to evolving security challenges. The NSG's regional hub at Chennai would serve as the nodal agency for training coordination with the Puducherry police, the release said. Further, the Puducherry police would identify, prepare and nominate eligible personnel for training, ensuring they met operational fitness and skills prescribed by the NSG, the release added. Security review meet A high-level security meeting was chaired by the DGP at the headquarters alongside the MoU signing event. Besides senior officers of the Puducherry police, officers from the neighbouring districts of Villupuram and Cuddalore in Tamil Nadu, and officials from the Coast Guard and IB were also present. The DIG of Police, Thanjavur, Superintendents of Police of Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur participated in the meeting through vide-conferencing, the release said. The DGP emphasised the need for sharing real-time intelligence on issues impacting security of Puducherry, Karaikal and their neighbouring districts. The meeting also stressed the importance of being on high alert and deploying adequate force to thwart any incident during Independence Day celebrations.

Jammu, Aug 13 (PTI) The body of an Pakistani intruder, who was killed by BSF after he ignored warning and tried to enter India from across the International Border, was handed over to Pakistan Rangers on Wednesday, officials said. The intruder was fired upon by the BSF two days ago after he ignored repeated warnings and aggressively approached the border fence in the Hiranagar sector of Kathua district, they said. He later succumbed to his injuries during treatment at AIIMS Jammu.
