Indian Railways: How many passengers travelled by train in last six years?
Earlier this week, Congress MP Imran Masood raised a question to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw regarding the number of passengers who have travelled by train since 2019.
In response, Vaishnaw stated that train occupancy is not uniform throughout the year. He explained that passenger numbers fluctuate depending on lean and peak travel periods.
'On Indian Railways, the occupancy pattern of trains is not uniform throughout the year, and it varies over lean and peak periods. During peak rush periods, the occupancy of the trains, especially on popular routes, remains full whereas during lean periods and on less popular routes, there is sub optimal utilization,' Vaishnaw added.
A total of 3349 crore passengers travelled in Indian Railways (IR) during last six years (i.e. 2019-20 to 2024-25) which included 418 crore reserved and 2,931 crore unreserved class passengers (2020-21 and 2021-22 were COVID years).
Elaborating further, Vaishnaw said, 'To cater to the rush during Durga Pooja/Deepawali/Chhath, 7,990 trips of Special trains were operated during the period 1st October,2024 to 30th November, 2024, to serve approximately 1.8 crore passengers.
With a view to facilitate the passengers during the recently concluded Maha Kumbh, IR operated more than 17,300 trains during the period 13th January, 2025 to 28th February, 2025, which served approximately 4.24 crore passengers.'
The national transporter also increased the facilities for passengers demanding general class travel. A look at how many passengers travelled by general coaches in the last five financial years.

'Bhagwa Wins': Says Sadhvi As NIA Exposes 'Saffron Terror' Lie, BJP Celebrates | Malegaon Blast The NIA court has acquitted all accused in the Malegaon blast case, including BJP MP Sadhvi Pragya Thakur. Declaring that "Bhagwa has won," Sadhvi slammed the conspiracy to defame Hindutva and said her spiritual life was shattered by the false accusations. This comes just a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah declared in the Rajya Sabha, "No Hindu can be a terrorist." BJP leaders say the verdict is a complete vindication of their stand and a direct blow to the Congress narrative of "saffron terror." Nishikant Dubey hit out at the Congress, accusing them of falsely maligning saints and nationalists instead of focusing on Pakistani terror threats. While the Congress maintains that the verdict will be appealed, the political warlines have sharpened. #trumptariff #operationsindoor #rahulgandhi #shashitharoor #gauravgogoi #priyankagandhi #pmmodi #jaishankar #usindiatrade #modivstrump #indianeconomy #foreignpolicyfail #indiausrelations #breakingnews #trending #bharat #toi #toibharat #indianews 1.2K views | 6 hours ago

Padayatra inspired by Bharat Jodo yatra: Mahesh Goud
Hyderabad Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Mahesh Kumar Goud began his 'Janahita padayatra' from Parigi on Thursday. 'Congress has always been known for meeting people directly,' he said citing the Bharat Jodo yatra led by Rahul Gandhi earlier. 'We walk to understand people, not for media headlines,' he said, making it clear that the padayatra was in accordance with All India Congress Committee (AICC) directives, intending to gather feedback on existing welfare schemes and understand what more people desire. Mr. Goud claimed that the Congress government, despite inheriting a debt-ridden State from the previous BRS regime, was successfully managing both welfare and development. Targeting BRS, he said that former CM K. Chandrasekhar Rao buried Telangana under debt, and Congress was now forced to pay huge interest on loans, with no substantial development seen with the borrowed money. Thanks to the initiatives of the Revanth Reddy-led Congress government, investments worth ₹1.80 lakh crore have come to the State, he said. Highlighting the key achievements since the Congress took charge, he referred to 65,000 jobs filled and 35,000 more to be announced soon, Indiramma houses, free bus travel for women, and fine rice through ration shops. BC quota Hitting out at BJP and BRS, Mr. Goud questioned their sincerity on BC reservations. 'BJP leaders make grand declarations about supporting 42% BC reservation, but don't join the government's protests in Delhi on August 5, 6, and 7, to fight for legal recognition.' Mr. Goud added that BRS MLC K. Kavitha has nothing to do with BC reservations and asked where was her committment when BRS was in power. AICC in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan said that Congress was dedicated to Ambedkar and Phule's vision of social justice. 'Rahul Gandhi's padayatra was never about politics. It was about listening to the people. Our government in Telangana acted immediately on Rahul's advice,' she said, and appealed to all the progressive forces to join the fight for BC rights in Delhi and make it a national priority. Ministers D. Sridhar Babu, Konda Surekha and Parigi MLA T. Rammohan Reddy also joined him.

BJP MP Ravi Kishan seeks regulation of food prices, uses samosa to make his case
BJP MP and actor Ravi Kishan on Wednesday requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to regulate the prices and quantity of food items served from dhabas to five-star hotels."I still don't understand why we get a samosa on a small plate in some place and on a big plate in some other place for the same price. Such a vast market with crores of customers is operating without any rules or regulations," said the MP from Gorakhpur. advertisementDuring zero hour in the Lok Sabha, the BJP MP from Uttar Pradesh's Gorakhpur said the prices, quality and quantity of food items are different everywhere. "A uniformity is needed," he said. Pointing out the lack of uniformity in the prices and quantities of food items across the country, Kishan said, "Dal Tadka is available for Rs 100 at some outlets, Rs 120 at others, and Rs 1,000 in some hotels."Ravi Kishan's demand stirred a row, with Congress spokesperson Surendra Rajput mocking the BJP MP and asking if he could also speak up to regulate the highly-priced samosas at "airports run by PM Modi's friend Gautam Adani." Coming to Kishan's defence, BJP spokesperson Rakesh Tripathi said that the Congress is not interested in the business of the House, as they are mocking an issue of public interest."Their sole focus is to create noise, disrupt proceedings, and deliberately obstruct the House. Those who have made such behavior a habit are naturally surprised when genuine public interest issues are raised," he said."Are issues like samosas or food stalls not related to public interest? Mocking such matters and making them a subject of ridicule—how appropriate is that?," he further questioned.- EndsInputs from PTI
