Transformer snag leads to 10-day outage at this village in Greater Noida
The discom disconnected 15 connections.
Later power supply was fully restored by Tuesday, Noida Power Company Limited (NPCL) officials said. The protest was staged at NPCL office in Sigma 4 over "no power for nearly 10 days" due to two "faulty" transformers, villagers alleged. The sit-in protest, held under the leadership of Kisan Ekta Sangh, demanded immediate replacement of the transformers.
Villagers who united under the leadership of Advocate Satish, state general secretary of KES, asked, "Why were those residents made to suffer who have been clearing their dues?"

While NPCL replaced the two transformers on Monday following the demonstration, discom officials claimed, 40 consumers — from among 1,000 residents — owed Rs 44 lakh in dues, adding, fourteen consumers had outstanding amounts of Rs 1 lakh, many pending since 2012.
The protest was called off after talks between NPCL officials and farmers and assurance from the discom on installing new transformers.
NPCL will organise a special camp on Sunday (June 29). "At the camp, residents will be able to pay their outstanding bills and apply for new electricity connections," NCPL (operations) vice-president Sarnath Ganguly told TOI.
KES national president Soran Pradhan told TOI, "The transformers were not being replaced because some consumers in the village did not clear their outstanding dues.
This angered the residents of the village. They maintained those who had cleared their dues should not be punished with no power supply. Hence, a protest was held to demand the immediate replacement of the two transformers and resumption of supply in the village.
"
Soran maintained that during this time, residents managed the water supply from hand pumps and slept on rooftops and under trees. "But this is also the norm in villages.
Thankfully, no one fell ill," Soran said.
While residents raised slogans against NPCL, the in-charges of Sector Beta-2 and Dankaur police stations reached the spot.
Ganguly said NPCL had been compelled to disconnect the supply of 15 consumers due to non-payment, "despite multiple notices", as alarmingly, some individuals owe over Rs 1 lakh in dues. "However, after Monday's protest, the villagers have collectively agreed to prioritise bill payments to prevent financial losses to NPCL.
Those without existing connections are also expected to regularise their electricity usage by applying for new connections during the upcoming camp," Ganguly said.
"This comes after the villagers, many of whom were power defaulters since 2012, promised to clear their outstanding electricity dues and ensure timely payments," Ganguly said, adding that Rajpur village comprises 40 electricity consumers who collectively owe approximately Rs 44 lakh in unpaid bills.

Noida, Ghaziabad School Holiday: Four-Day Holiday Starts Today; Sparks Debate Over Learning Process
The Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Department has ordered the closure of government primary schools in Noida and Ghaziabad from August 14 to August 17, according to TOI reports. Private schools, however, remain unaffected and are expected to remain open on August 14. The announcement of the holiday has sparked concern among teachers regarding its impact on the learning process. A primary school teacher in Noida pointed out that this four-day break comes soon after schools were closed for a week due to the Kanwar Yatra. "Just a few days back, schools were closed for nearly a week due to the Kanwar Yatra. Now again there is a four-day holiday. This will hamper the teaching-learning process, especially for younger students," said a primary school teacher in Noida, TOI reported. The four-day break includes a restricted holiday for Chehlum on August 14, Independence Day celebrations on August 15, Janmashtami holiday on August 16, and Sunday on August 17. Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) of Noida, Rahul Panwar, clarified that private schools can decide whether to remain open on August 14. 'Aug 14 is a restricted holiday. If any private school wants to remain open, they can,' he said. However, on Aug 15, all schools will reopen briefly for flag hoisting and Independence Day celebrations, said the official. Officials shared details of the Independence Day programme. "Majorly, Independence Day celebrations will take place in higher secondary schools on Thursday and Friday. Saturday is a holiday for Janmashtami," said Dharmendra Kumar, district inspector of schools (DIOS) of Ghaziabad, TOI reported. Kumar also mentioned the other necessary instructions to all schools regarding flag hoisting, cultural events, and safety protocols. On the other hand, another school teacher from Ghaziabad encouraged the announcement of a day break in school and said, "It's good that it's a long weekend. It gives everyone time to relax and recharge. Teachers, too, need some rest in the middle of a hectic term."

Power contractors threaten stir over ‘illegal' connections in Bengaluru
BENGALURU: The Karnataka State Licensed Electrical Contractors Association (KSLECA) urged the state government to immediately restore electricity connections to buildings that had applied before April 4, when a Supreme Court order restricting power supply to properties without approved plans or Occupancy Certificates (OC) came into effect. The association also warned that if their demands are not met, over 20,000 contractors, consumers, farmers, and organizations will stage a massive protest at Freedom Park on August 20 Speaking at a press conference here on Wednesday, C Ramesh, state president, KSLECA, said, 'We demand that while implementing the Supreme Court's December 17, 2024 order, it has to to exempt ongoing and completed building projects from mandatory Occupancy/Completion Certificates if temporary electricity connection is obtained before April 9, 2025.' According to Ramesh, the earlier KERC order of January 13, 2023, allowed electricity connections based on address proof and an approved plan, and was valid until March 13, 2025. He alleged that lakhs of applicants who had paid fees and prepared infrastructure before April 4 are being denied power. Other demands from the association include allowing First-Class contractors to handle operations and maintenance of 66/11 kV and 110/11 kV substations, speeding up connections for loads above 2 MW, ensuring ESCOM-funded compensations for contract labour accidents, and exempting certain agricultural electricity connections from a Rs 15,000 penalty under the Revised Accelerated Electricity Scheme notified on April 15. The association highlighted that despite assurances from the Energy Minister and senior officials after a protest on March 18, there has been no progress on several agreed points. They warned of a massive statewide protest if the issues remain unresolved, involving contractors, consumers, pro-Karnataka activists, farmers, and writers.

From cleaning, repairing of roads to Guru Tegh Bahadur sites: Bains pledges Rs 20L from discretionary funds, one month's salary as part of religious sentence
Complying with the direction of the Akal Takht, Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains has pledged Rs 20 lakh from his discretionary funds and one month's salary for the cleaning and repair of approach roads to sites associated with Guru Tegh Bahadur. In compliance with the order received from the Five Singh Sahibaan at Sri Akal Takht Sahib, and with the grace of Guru Sahib Ji, after completing the assigned service, I went to Sri Akal Takht Sahib, offered Ardaas, and submitted a report regarding the completed service, Bains said. For the cleaning and improvement of the roads leading to Gurdwara Guru Ke Mahal, Gurdwara Kotha Sahib Patshahi Nauvin, and Gurdwara Baba Bakala Sahib, I pledge to contribute Rs 20 lakh from my discretionary funds and, as a personal offering, one month's salary, he said. Bains also said he would make every possible effort, personally and through the government for beautification works around other sites linked to Guru Tegh Bahadur. As a humble Sikh, I request forgiveness for mistakes committed knowingly or unknowingly in the past, and seek blessings to serve religion, the community, the nation, Punjab and society to the greatest extent in the future, he said. The Sikh clergy summoned Bains for organising entertainment performances, involving dance and music, at a programme held in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on July 24 to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth of the ten Sikh Gurus. The Punjab Language Department organised the event, held at Tagore Hall in Srinagar. At the meeting held at the Akal Takht secretariat, Bains apologised for the Srinagar event, which was seen as a deep affront to Sikh sentiments. The Sikh clergy asked him to immediately visit Gurdwara Guru Ke Mahal, the birthplace of Guru Tegh Bahadur, in Amritsar, to inspect and ensure repairs and cleanliness on the approach roads and nearby streets. This is the first time that the Akal Takht mandated infrastructure development as part of a religious sentence.
