Los Angeles Lakers' Byron Scott reveals how Pat Riley's speeches relentlessly fired up players to dominate
Pat Riley's name still carries weight in the NBA world. Known for leading the Los Angeles Lakers to four titles in the 1980s, Riley was more than just a tactical mastermind. He had a gift that few coaches have: the ability to inspire.
Decades later, his speeches are still being remembered by players who were lucky enough to sit in those locker rooms.

reflect on Pat Riley's impact
On July 6, Cedric Ceballos appeared on Byron Scott's YouTube show Fast Break to talk about his brief time under Pat Riley. Ceballos played just 27 games for the Miami Heat during the 2000-01 NBA season. But even in that short span, Riley left a lasting impression.
'How do you bring your emotions down after his pregame speeches?' Ceballos said.
'I wanted to run through a wall every time he opened his mouth to speak.'
Byron Scott, who played under Riley for seven seasons with the Lakers, agreed instantly. He recalled how Riley's speeches didn't just motivate-they fueled an obsession with winning. 'I never brought my emotions down,' Scott said. 'I wanted to go out there and kill somebody.'
How Pat Riley influenced Los Angeles Lakers and built a legacy
Before becoming a coach, Pat Riley played in the NBA himself; therefore, he understood the psychological and emotional requirements of players.
As a coach, he raised that awareness to new levels. Riley made every locker room player feel like they had a reason.
Byron Scott's career reached its high point under Riley's tenure. With a career-high 21. 7 points per game in the 1987–88 NBA season, Scott helped the Lakers capture their last Riley-era crown. He always gave Riley credit for drawing out his best.

The legacy didn't end in the '80s. In 2001, after Heat players reportedly criticized Riley, Scott stepped in to defend him.
'He'd do anything for his players to make them feel more at home,' Scott told The New York Times. 'He wanted everything first class. For guys to come back at him like this is ludicrous to me.'

Even years after retiring from coaching, Pat Riley's influence is still being talked about-not just because of the wins, but because of how he made players feel. That legacy may just be as powerful as the championships themselves.

NFL Camp on Hold: Browns rookie Quinshon Judkins lands in jail over domestic violence charge
Browns rookie Quinshon Judkins remains in custody after domestic violence arrest just days before training camp (Image credits: IG/X) Just six days before the Cleveland Browns' rookie class is set to report to training camp, second-round pick Quinshon Judkins remains behind bars following an arrest for domestic violence in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The 21-year-old running back, drafted No. 36 overall in April, is facing a misdemeanor battery charge categorized as a domestic offense. His first court appearance is scheduled for Sunday morning, per Broward County arrest records. Unsigned and in custody: Browns face early PR crisis Judkins, who has yet to sign his rookie contract, is now at the center of a legal and public relations headache for Cleveland. He is the only member of the Browns' 2025 draft class still unsigned—a detail that now carries added weight amid the arrest. The team confirmed on Saturday it is 'aware and gathering more information,' but has not provided further comment. No bail had been set as of Saturday night, and the NFL has yet to issue a statement. — fballforeverhq (@fballforeverhq) The incident took place in the Fort Lauderdale area Saturday afternoon. While full arrest details remain under wraps, the charge—"battery: touch or strike" involving domestic violence—places Judkins at risk of both criminal penalties and discipline under the NFL's personal conduct policy. League precedent suggests even a misdemeanor could trigger a suspension or time on the Commissioner's Exempt List. With his contract unsigned and legal status unclear, his participation in camp now appears unlikely. For Cleveland, the arrest adds to a troubling pattern of off-field scrutiny that has dogged the franchise in recent years. From high-profile quarterback controversies to now a rookie's domestic violence charge before even signing his deal, the team finds itself again forced to address image and accountability before a single snap of training camp. IND vs ENG 3rd Test: Shubman Gill's Lord's outburst sparks meme fest comparing him to Virat Kohli
England batsman Zak Crawley and India captain Shubman Gill (Photo by) England and India found themselves trading accusations after a tense final few minutes on Day 3 at Lord's. Shubman Gill was at the centre of it all when Zak Crawley 's tactics to slow the game down triggered a fiery response from the India captain. India were hoping to squeeze in two overs before stumps after finishing level with England's first-innings score, but Crawley's repeated backing away and a sudden physio call stopped that plan in its tracks. The delay frustrated the Indians, and Gill's reaction was caught live on the stump mic, much to the delight of fans who wasted no time turning the moment into memes. The finger-pointing, the choice words, and the animated gestures between Crawley, Gill and Ben Duckett made sure this brief clash stole the day's headlines. England's camp defended Crawley, pointing out that India too had slowed the game earlier, while Michael Vaughan called it one of the best pieces of time-wasting he'd seen. Rahul's classy knock, supported by crucial contributions from Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant , kept India in the fight on a pitch that is starting to misbehave. Pant batted bravely despite a finger injury but was run out after a mix-up just before lunch. India's lower order dug in but could not accelerate much, leaving the game finely balanced as England's openers returned to bat. IND vs ENG, 3rd Test: Jonathan Trott accuses Shubman Gill of ‘acting,' draws parallels with Virat Kohli's theatrics
Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill Former England cricketer Jonathan Trott has slammed India captain Shubman Gill for gesticulating towards Zak Crawley and shouting an expletive in his direction in the last over of Day 3 of the Lord's Test. Opener Zak Crawley repeatedly delayed bowler Jasprit Bumrah and called for a physio after being hit on the finger, successfully ensuring that he and Ben Duckett had to face only one over before the close of play, instead of two. Crawley's time-wasting tactics infuriated Gill and his teammates. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Gill pointed his finger at Crawley and told him to 'grow some f***ing balls.' Duckett quickly intervened, positioning himself between them, but the verbal exchange continued. A ball later, Gill rushed to Crawley and held his arms up in an X. Crawley responded by waving a finger at Gill. Trott compared Gill's antics to those of former India captain Virat Kohli. 'We don't know what went on when England were fielding, whether they were dishing it out. But I don't like the acting from Shubman Gill; as a captain, you set the tone,' Trott said on JioCinema. Why Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah lost their cool in last five minutes of Day 3 vs England 'Pointing fingers and getting very confrontational — very much like a previous captain — getting in the face of the opposition. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 목주름 방치하면 '이렇게' 됩니다 뷰앤디 더 알아보기 Undo 'I'm all for being competitive and tough on the field, but sometimes you have to rise above it. It sets up nicely for tomorrow's play.' The third Test between India and England is finely balanced, with no clear favourite at this stage. KL Rahul racked up his second hundred at the iconic Lord's before India matched England's first-innings total of 387 on an attritional day, leaving the game on an even keel on a deteriorating pitch. Poll Do you think Shubman Gill's reaction towards Zak Crawley was justified? Yes, he was right to confront Crawley. No, he should have kept his cool. Besides Rahul's high-quality effort (100 off 177), Ravindra Jadeja (72 off 131) and Rishabh Pant (74 off 112) propped up India's first-innings total. It will be a challenge for India to bat last on a surface where the odd ball is taking off after pitching and is offering some turn.
