Gurgaon MCG forms cell to monitor waste pickup, sweeping

Time of India23-06-2025
Gurgaon: MCG on Monday constituted a cell to supervise sanitation related work in the city. The cell will monitor door-to-door waste collection, road sweeping, management of legacy waste at Bandhwari landfill site and handling of construction and demolition (C&D) waste.
Additional commissioner Ravinder Yadav was designated as the cell's nodal officer to oversee operations. The cell also includes consultants and a team of data entry operators who will handle daily monitoring and reporting duties.
"The cell will oversee multiple sanitation aspects, including doorstep waste collection, road sweeping, identification of vulnerable waste points, and monitoring of bulk waste generators.
It will also supervise waste transportation to the Bandhwari site and construction waste management," said a senior MCG official.
The cell's responsibilities include GPS tracking, media monitoring, and analysis of complaints received through multiple platforms and data analysis for identifying operational issues related to vehicles, workforce, and resources. The cell will submit its reports to MCG commissioner Pradeep Dahiya.
TOI reported on June 19 that MCG spent nearly Rs 290 crore on sanitation since the solid waste environment exigency programme (SWEEP) was implemented in Gurgaon from June 12, 2024, to June 1, 2025. Despite that, garbage dumps still pockmark the city, and construction and demolition waste lines roadsides in pockets. Waste collection and processing are still marked by ad hocism. The corporation has not been able to meet National Green Tribunal-set targets to clear legacy waste from the Bandhwari landfill or find an alternative site.
Moreover, an additional 15 operators were appointed to strengthen the city's sanitation monitoring system. MCG officials said that these operators demonstrated coordination between sanitation and engineering departments through the call centre during recent heavy rainfall to address the waterlogging issues.

‘Open-book exam fine, but with analytical questions'

Noida: Schools have welcomed CBSE's decision to implement an open-book exam for Class 9 from the academic year 2026-27. Principals believe that students will gain a deeper understanding of subjects, provided schools maintain integrity and questions are analytical, conceptual, and application-based. CBSE's decision came following the results of a pilot study conducted to evaluate the feasibility and acceptance of such a model. A framework and guidelines on how to conduct open-book exams effectively will be suggested to the schools. However, the implementation will not be mandatory. For an open-book exam, the question patterns need to be aligned with the policy first. Though this is a very good step, we're only 50% ready in terms of competency. Implementing it in the next academic year is risky. Teachers need time to understand the framework, plan the execution, and evaluate fairly." She stressed that the new format must go beyond surface-level questioning. "The right kind of research and planning is needed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like We Have No Words For Dog The Bounty Hunter's Transformation Paperela Undo Questions must test analytical skills and evaluation—not simply allow students to lift answers from textbooks," she added. Aditi Basu Roy, principal of Grad International School, Noida, underscored the need for ethical implementation. "The exam process must be handled with integrity. While open-book exams do exist in law, they must not become shortcuts," she told TOI. Some teachers also called the decision 'progressive and much-needed'. The initiative aligns with the vision of the NEP 2020 and the NCFSE 2023, as it moves the focus from rote memorisation to deep conceptual understanding, problem-solving, and real-world application of knowledge. "CBSE has already implemented Open Text Based Assessment (OTBA), which helps students engage more deeply with content, make cross-curricular connections, and develop analytical skills beyond textbook learning. Building on that experience, the new open-book assessment framework is poised to further nurture critical thinking and lifelong learning skills, while reducing exam-related stress and making assessments more meaningful and relevant for the 21st-century learner," said Neha Sharma, principal of Apeejay School, Noida. DU tells colleges to stick to notified syllabi

New Delhi: Days after it withdrew a controversial introduction of Manusmriti from the Sanskrit syllabus following a TOI report, Delhi University has directed college principals to ensure that only officially notified syllabi are taught. The notification, dated Aug 5 and issued by the registrar, said the university was aware of "several instances where the colleges have taught either the wrong courses or unapproved or unnotified syllabi of courses to students due to which students are put at unnecessary inconveniences". "All are hereby informed that the students must be offered and taught only the syllabi notified on the website of the university," the circular stated. The directive comes in the backdrop of a June 12 TOI report that revealed the introduction of a Sanskrit course, Dharmashastra Studies, which featured Manusmriti as a primary text. Previous proposals for inclusion of the text in law and history honours syllabi had to be withdrawn by the administration after it triggered criticism from a section of teachers and students who argued that Manusmriti promotes discriminatory ideas. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Foods for Spine Health: Foods That Fight Back Pain Learn More Undo Following the TOI report, the university announced that the text would not be taught in any course and would be withdrawn from the Sanskrit curriculum. At the time, official sources had told TOI that the administration was not aware of the inclusion in the curriculum until after the report was published. In an official statement, the university clarified that the contentious text would be removed. The latest notification seeks to address similar lapses and ensure compliance with the final, approved syllabi published on the university website. According to DU officials who spoke on condition of anonymity, the problem arises because proposals discussed in academic bodies often undergo changes before being finalised, but some colleges proceed with earlier versions without waiting for the official upload. "The syllabi placed before the Standing Committee/Academic Council are generally modified as per suggestions received… Therefore… rely on the syllabi notified on the website," the circular stated. There was no immediate response from the DU registrar on whether the move was directly linked to the Sanskrit syllabus row and on the measures being taken to prevent such issues in the future. Two years after Rs 4-crore rejuvenation, Bengaluru's Gangashetty lake faces pollution, fish deaths

1 2 Bengaluru: Gangashetty lake in KR Pura is facing severe distress with multiple fishkills being reported barely two years after its Rs 4-crore rejuvenation in 2023. Both locals and BBMP officials attribute fishkills reported since July 31 to untreated sewage flowing into the lake through a stormwater drain. Lake activist Raghavendra Pachhapur, who has been raising the alarm on social media, blamed the crisis on poor planning of rejuvenation projects. He said lakes are naturally situated at lower altitudes, allowing rainwater from surrounding areas to flow in, maintaining water quality. "Instead, BBMP connects lakes to polluted rajakaluves carrying sewage, plastic, and waste throughout the year. Without a steady inflow of clean rainwater, lake ecology collapses," he said. BBMP lake division also admitted that the inflow system is a major concern at Gangashetty lake. BBMP officials have identified two problems with the connected rajakaluve — an encroachment that has narrowed the drain's outlet and a faulty inlet that allows sewage to enter during rains. A diversion channel was built to separate sewage from rainwater, but it fails during heavy rainfall. According to a BBMP engineer, the sewage volume in the rajakaluve near Gangashetty increased from 5-10 million litres per day (MLD) to 40-50 MLD. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Keep Your Heart Healthy WIth These Delicious Superfoods Undo The engineer blames BWSSB for permitting untreated sewage into stormwater drains, which are meant only for rainwater. The problem has been compounded by new buildings and apartments discharging sewage directly into the drain instead of connecting to the underground drainage network. You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru | Gold Rates Today in Bengaluru | Silver Rates Today in Bengaluru Conflict of interest The engineer calls it a conflict of interest. "BWSSB manages the underground drainage network but allows sewage to flow into rajakaluves, while BBMP is left to handle the resulting lake pollution," said the engineer. For residents like Srinivas of Chinnagara Layout, which is just 50m from the lake, the decline is heartbreaking. Part of a 25-member volunteer team that maintains greenery around the lake, he said they have found seven or eight dead fish in a single morning, alongside dead birds. "The sewage-rainwater mix brings chemicals, plastic, and waste that suffocate aquatic life. There are snakes, birds, and different kinds of fish… all of them are getting affected. Around the lake, we have planted saplings, and they are bearing fruits. We volunteers water them… we are doing the best we can in our capacity to protect our lake. But neither BBMP nor BWSSB is doing anything to protect what is in their capacity," Srinivas said. Locals are clear about the solution: restore clean rainwater inflow and completely block the entry of sewage. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
