Swimming: Marchand smashes long-standing 200m medley world record - Omni sports
Swimming in the semi-finals at the world championships, the 23-year-old Frenchman clocked 1min 52.69sec to wipe more than a second off the previous 200m IM record of 1:54.00 set by Ryan Lochte in 2011.
Marchand now owns both medley world records after taking down Phelps's 400m mark at the 2023 world championships.
That time had stood since the 2008 Beijing Olympics and was the American great's last remaining record.
Marchand became a national hero in France after winning four individual golds at the Paris Olympics a year ago.
He said it would take time to come to terms with his latest feat.
"I'm going to try to sleep well tonight," he said.
"It's going to be tough tomorrow but the final is going to be cool.
"I'm going to try to understand what I've just done. It may take a few months, and after I'll look at what's next."
Marchand took an extended break from swimming after his Paris Olympics heroics and only returned to competition in May.
He is focusing on the medley events in Singapore and had said he was going for Lochte's record.
Marchand got his world championship campaign under way on Wednesday morning, clocking a time of 1:57.63 in the heats.
He said he would go all-out for the record in the semi-finals rather than conserve his energy for Thursday's final
"For me it's a victory," he said.
"I still have a little trouble believing it but I'm so happy, it was so good. It's all the strength work that I've done this year."

Formula One: Hamilton calls himself 'useless,' suggests driver change at Ferrari - Omni sports
Lewis Hamilton called himself 'absolutely useless' and suggested Ferrari should change drivers after he qualified 12th for the Hungarian Grand Prix and teammate Charles Leclerc took pole position. It was a new low in a difficult first season with Ferrari for seven-time Formula 1 champion Hamilton, who qualified outside the top 10 for the second race in a row. "I'm useless, absolutely useless," Hamilton told British broadcaster Sky Sports. 'The team have no problem. You've seen the car's on pole. So, they probably need to change driver.' He did win a sprint race in China in March, but a double disqualification for technical infringements on Hamilton and Leclerc's cars in the Chinese Grand Prix the next day required a time-consuming rethink of Ferrari's race setups. Leclerc is fifth in the standings, only one position ahead of Hamilton, but has five podium finishes in 2005. In Sunday's race, he'll aim to give Ferrari its first F1 win since October. Last week, Hamilton said it was 'crunch time' and revealed he's been holding a series of meetings with Ferrari executives to discuss improvements and ensure he has more of a say in how the team develops its car for the sweeping regulation changes coming in 2026. Cycling: Home hero Ferrand-Prevot in epic climb to Tour de France lead - Omni sports
French rider Pauline Ferrand-Prevot climbed to a magnificent solo triumph at the women's Tour de France on Saturday to take over the lead of the race with one stage remaining. Olympic mountain bike champion Ferrand-Prevot of Visma, who joined the road race scene last year, attacked from 10km out with huge crowds of home supporters on the mountainside cheering her along. Visma rider Prevot-Ferrand now leads the overall standings by a comfortable 2 minutes and 37 seconds from Australia's Sarah Gigante, albeit with a last daunting mountain stage on Sunday to seal the deal. "I just tried to go as fast as possible. If I came back to road cycling it was in an effort to win this race so I made the right choice," said the 33-year-old. "I wanted to have as big a gap as possible, it's not over yet but I'm very happy with what we did today." Gigante of AG was second atop la Madeleine at 1min 45sec, while LTK's Niamh Fisher-Black was third at 2min 15sec. "I was dreaming of winning this race," said Gigante. "But Pauline was magnificent." Overnight leader Kim Le Court-Pienaar sacrificed her ride to support Gigante, who cried when mentioning this after the race. No Frenchman has won the 21-day men's Tour de France since 1985 when Bernard Hinault won his fifth, now Ferrand-Prevot can become the first French rider to win the modern women's Tour de France in its fourth edition.
