Lionel Messi extends MLS record-breaking streak, scoring two goals against Nashville SC
Lionel Messi scored two goals in Inter Miami's 2-1 victory over Nashville SC on Saturday, extending his record-breaking streak of scoring multiple goals in a Major League Soccer game to five.
Victory marked Miami's fifth consecutive win too and snapped Nashville's 15-match unbeaten streak in the league.
Messi opened the scoring in the 17th minute, threading a free kick from just outside the box through a hole in Nashville's defensive wall and into the corner of the net, past the outstretched fingertips of goalkeeper Joe Willis.
That gave Miami a 1-0 lead until Nashville equalized just after halftime when Hany Mukhtar headed in Andy Nájar's perfectly-weighted cross.
A little over 10 minutes later, Messi put Miami back in front, capitalizing on a mistake from Willis who simply passed the ball to the Argentinian as he tried to clear it. Although Willis tried to atone for his lapse in concentration, Messi simply dribbled the ball around him and fired in an easy winner.
Not since 2012 when he played for Barcelona has Messi scored more than one goal in five consecutive league games, according to ESPN – though, admittedly, LaLiga is a very different league to the MLS.
'There aren't very many words. It's incredible what he continues to do,' Miami head coach Javier Mascherano told reporters afterward, per MLS. 'To break great records now every three days… I've said it a thousand times today; he is the flag for our team.
'He is the one. He's the leader. He shows us the way to compete.'
Messi has scored 16 goals so far this season – with 10 of those, as well as five assists – coming in his last five games. Miami, meanwhile, is fifth in the Eastern Conference but with three games in hand on all the teams above them. A win in all three games – while no small feat – would put the team top of the league.

League-leading Union set to take on last-place CF Montreal

The Union (13-5-4, 43 points) head into the midweek matchup with the best record in MLS, moving atop the standings with a 2-0 win against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak, both losses coming on the road. 'Really happy with the result,' Philadelphia coach Bradley Carnell said after the match. 'I think it was a good bounce-back from the last couple of games, where we didn't quite show our true selves. 'We wanted to be a little more expressive, a little more of who we are and what we are. I think you saw that in abundance (Saturday). I'm really proud of the boys for their application and the way they went about their business.' Philadelphia has the second-best home record in the Eastern Conference at 7-1-3, with its 24 points earned as the hosts trailing only the Columbus Crew. Its lone loss on its own pitch came March 16 against Nashville -- the Union's second home match of the season. Homegrown midfielder Quinn Sullivan earned his team-leading eighth assist of the season on Bruno Damiani's insurance goal in the win against the Red Bulls. Just past the midpoint of the season, the 21-year-old is only three assists shy of matching his career high of 11 set last season. 'He does so much work for us off the ball, for him to get rewarded, I think it's just deserved,' Carnell said. The Union have been the stingiest team in MLS, conceding a league-low 21 goals. That will be a tough challenge for a Montreal squad that has struggled to score all season long. The Canadian side (3-13-6, 15 points) has managed just 19 goals through 22 matches, with nine of those coming from Prince Owusu. The German striker helped Montreal earn a 1-1 draw in its last outing, converting a penalty in the 83rd minute against Orlando City on Saturday. He's been on a roll over the past month, scoring five goals in his past five regular-season matches. 'We're creating more scoring chances lately, and I'm benefiting from that,' Owusu said. 'I know my role, and I'm very confident.' Though tied for last place in the overall standings, Montreal is 2-2-1 in its past five matches and will be looking to earn points in consecutive matches for only the second time this season. They last did so in mid-May, following up their first win of the season with a draw. Two of Montreal's three wins on the season have come on the road (2-7-3).

Two sizzling squads meet when LAFC visit Minnesota United

LAFC (9-5-5, 32 points), who blanked the Loons 1-0 in the season opener for both teams on Feb. 22 in Los Angeles, are 0-2-4 all-time in road matches with Minnesota, including a 2-0 loss last season. LAFC are sixth in the Western Conference but still have three games in hand after going 0-2-1, including a 2-0 loss to eventual champion Chelsea, in the FIFA Club World Cup. After a 1-0 home loss to Vancouver, Los Angeles bounced back with a 3-0 win over the Rapids and a 2-0 victory last Saturday over Dallas. Former Tottenham star and French international Hugo Lloris needed to make just one save against Dallas for his eighth clean sheet of the season and 20th in two seasons with LAFC. Denis Bouanga had a goal and an assist to increase his MLS totals to 10 goals and seven assists in 18 matches. 'There is rhythm, that is great to see,' LAFC coach Steve Cherundolo said. 'There is confidence. That is good to see. ... We have done this for two (matches) in a row, and we hope to continue that against Minnesota.' Los Angeles will have to do it without one of its best defenders, however. Oluwaseyi, a member of the Canadian national team, has nine goals and eight assists this season. 'I think in general it was a high-level performance, and I think the score line reflected that and the chances we had reflected that,' Minnesota coach Eric Ramsay said. 'I think this team has a lot of energy and a lot of momentum at the moment.'
