Two Hollywood Giants Sue AI Image Engine Midjourney Calling It A 'Bottomless Pit Of Plagiarism'
Disney and NBCUniversal are going after Midjourney, a generative-AI tool trained on internet data that can be used to make everything from silly memes to short films made entirely of AI slop. The two Hollywood companies filed a lawsuit against the self-funded startup in Federal Court on Tuesday 'to stop its theft of their intellectual property.'
The complaint accuses Midjourney of profiting off user subscriptions in return for letting them generate images based on copyrighted material ranging from Deadpool and Darth Vader to Shrek and the Minions, Variety reports. Like other generative-AI tools, Midjourney is more or less indiscriminately trained on whatever data exists on the internet, no matter who it belongs to.
Disney and NBC Universal even reference a past interview with the company's founder, David Holz. Asked back in 2022 by Forbes whether it gets permission for any of the work it copies, he replied, 'No. There isn't really a way to get a hundred million images and know where they're coming from.' The lawsuit alleges Midjourney made $300 million in revenue last year off of roughly 21 million users.
'By helping itself to Plaintiffs' copyrighted works, and then distributing images (and soon videos) that blatantly incorporate and copy Disney's and Universal's famous characters — without investing a penny in their creation—Midjourney is the quintessential copyright free-rider and a bottomless pit of plagiarism,' the lawsuit reads. 'Piracy is piracy, and whether an infringing image or video is made with AI or another technology does not make it any less infringing. Midjourney's conduct misappropriates Disney's and Universal's intellectual property and threatens to upend the bedrock incentives of U.S. copyright law that drive American leadership in movies, television, and other creative arts.'
This is the highest-profile legal attack yet on a generative-AI company, following lawsuits by The New York Times and others against companies like OpenAI for copying written work. The outcome in court would have major consequences for the viability of a technology that companies like Microsoft, Google, and Meta are investing billions in. Without the ability to essentially copy the internet for free, the entire business model behind a lot of generative-AI and large language algorithms falls part.
'Midjourney's bootlegging business model and defiance of U.S copyright laware not only an attack on Disney, Universal, and the hard-working creative community that brings the magic of movies to life, but are also a broader threat to the American motion picture industry which has created millions of jobs and contributed more than $260 billion to the nation's economy,' the companies claim in their lawsuit. 'This case is not a 'close call' under well-settled copyright law.'

Advertisement The Air India jet that crashed on Thursday was built in 2014 and had performed some 8,000 takeoffs and landings, according to the Wall Street Journal. Despite enjoying a 14-year safety streak, the troubled aerospace giant has seen its Dreamliner suffer from a series of production woes and attention from whistleblowers warning about the massive plane's assembly. The issues began in 2013, with Boeing's fleet of 787s grounded following a series of battery fires flagged by air safety inspectors. Advertisement Things only got worse for Boeing last year when whistleblowers began coming out, accusing the company of taking shortcuts to fill the gap created by the 2020 pause, with the former employees and engineers warning that the practice could cause premature damage to the planes. Getty Images Among the whistleblowers was John Barnett, 62, who was found dead just a day after sitting for a deposition with the company's lawyers in March 2024. His death was ruled a suicide. Barnett's death triggered countless conspiracy theories targeted against Boeing, despite investigators finding no evidence of foul play involved in the former employee's death. Thursday's crash also comes as Boeing is still reeling from the deadly accidents involving its 737 Max plane, which saw 346 people die in crashes in 2018 and 2019. Ilona Maher Talks 2028 L.A. Olympics After Winning Bronze in Paris
American rugby player Ilona Maher was one of Team USA's breakout stars of the 2024 Paris Olympics - and with the 2028 summer games coming to Los Angeles, Maher is contemplating whether she wants to compete. "I am going to try to," the athlete, 28, told Kylie Kelce on the Thursday, June 12, episode of Kelce's "Not Gonna Lie" podcast. "I think it would be so cool to play in a home olympics. That is my goal, but I am still in a phase of trying to figure out what my love of it is. Like, my 'why' for rugby because I feel very fulfilled after the Olympics, getting a medal and doing all that." The bronze medalist helped lead the United States to its first-ever women's rugby medal last summer, and since then, she's kept plenty busy - not just as an athlete, but as a social media influencer, model and even contestant on Dancing With the Stars. She finished second on season 33 alongside pro partner Alan Bersten. "Playing while I still love it and not like it's a chore, and also I still feel good, is what I'm battling now," she continued. "I love doing this. I love doing the social media, the swim weeks and the shows, so I hope that I go back in a couple years and I'm like, 'I can't wait to work my ass off to put in the grind.'" Maher, however, is aware that playing in the Olympics is about more than just sports. "With the Olympics, this wasn't just for myself," she told Us Weekly exclusively in December 2024.
