Inter Milan Appoint Cristian Chivu As Coach After End Of Simone Inzaghi Era

Inter Milan appointed Cristian Chivu as head coach, replacing Simone Inzaghi, who left for Al Hilal.
Inter Milan has appointed Cristian Chivu to lead the Serie A club into a new era, confirming the former Romania defender as Simone Inzaghi's replacement before the upcoming Club World Cup.
Still recovering from their defeat by Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final, Inter has taken a chance on the less experienced Chivu after failing to secure Cesc Fabregas from Como.
'Inter Milan is pleased to welcome Cristian Chivu as the new head coach of the first team. The coach has signed a contract with Inter until 30 June 2027," the club announced in a statement.
Chivu has agreed to a deal with Inter worth a reported 2.5 million euros ($2.85 million) per season, stepping into one of Europe's biggest clubs only months after starting his senior coaching career with Parma.
Parma confirmed Chivu's departure earlier on Monday, paving the way for his arrival at Inter, where he previously won three Serie A titles and the 2010 Champions League as a player.
Chivu was part of the iconic Inter team that won the treble under José Mourinho 15 years ago, a feat the San Siro club attempted but failed to replicate this season.
In total, Chivu played 169 times over six seasons with Inter and also has significant experience in Serie A from his four seasons with Roma before moving north in 2007.
The 44-year-old replaced Fabio Pecchia in February and successfully guided Parma to Serie A safety in his first managerial role since leaving Inter's youth set-up last summer.
'I thank the club, staff, players, and fans for believing in me and our project," Chivu wrote on Instagram. 'Together we overcame obstacles and wrote a page in Parma's history that will remain in my heart."
Chivu's first match in charge of Inter will be against Monterrey in the Club World Cup next week, at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
He will lead a team that looked exhausted during their 5-0 defeat against PSG in the Champions League final late last month.
Inzaghi left Inter following the heavy defeat in Munich and has taken a position at Saudi Pro League club Al-Hilal, which is also participating in the Club World Cup.
Despite significant financial challenges, Inzaghi transformed Inter into one of Europe's top teams over his four seasons at the club, but his final campaign ended trophyless.
Inter seemed poised for success in Serie A, the Champions League, and the Italian Cup when they secured a place in the semi-finals of Europe's top club competition by defeating Bayern Munich. At that point, Inter was three points clear at the top of Serie A but ultimately surrendered the Scudetto to Napoli on the final day of the season and were eliminated from the Italian Cup by AC Milan.
This left the Champions League as Inter's sole chance for a trophy, but they suffered an embarrassing defeat in their second final in three years under Inzaghi.

Portugal beats Spain in penalty shootout to win Nations League

Munich: Cristiano Ronaldo hoisted up the Nations League trophy and "We Are The Champions" rang around the stadium after Portugal defeated Spain 5-3 in a penalty shootout in Munich on Sunday. Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved Alvaro Morata's fourth penalty for Spain, then Ruben Neves converted his team's fifth to seal the win after their match finished 2-2 after extra time. Morata was the only player to miss after seeing every player score their spot kicks before him. Oyarzabal squeezed the ball past Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa in the 45th after Pedri played him in. Live Events "It's a shame and it's tough, but with time it will be more appreciated," Oyarzabal said. "We struggled more in the second half, we were tired. The substitutions helped them. But we are proud of our team and we will fight to be close to winning a title again." Spain, still the European champion, failed to display the cohesion and fluency in attack that put five goals past France in the semifinal on Thursday. There was an element of fortune about the opening goal scored by Martin Zubimendi in the 21st when Portugal's defense failed to deal with Lamine Yamal's cross. Nuno Mendes leveled five minutes later when he drilled a low shot inside the far post. The 22-year-old left back was the player of the match - providing the cross that was deflected kindly for Ronaldo to score his equalizer, keeping Yamal in check, then confidently scoring his penalty in the shootout. Ronaldo was already off by then. He had gone off, exhausted, to standing ovations and a hug from coach Roberto Martinez in the 88th. In his previous game, Ronaldo led Portugal to its first win over Germany for 25 years. For Mendes and Paris Saint-Germain teammates Goncalo Ramos, Joao Neves and Vitinha, it was their second trophy in a little more than a week after winning the Champions League in the same stadium. The Real Madrid star scored his 50th goal for France before setting up the other as Les Bleus rallied after a lethargic start. France coach Didier Deschamps had made his lack of enthusiasm for the game clear the day before, noting his team had little to gain. "The game is there, we'll play it," Deschamps had said. France was without injured PSG stars Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola.

Players union rips MLS' 'retaliatory' response to CWC proposal

The MLS Players Association responded Sunday against the league's most recent offering in the ongoing battle over prize money and compensation around the upcoming Club World Cup competition. "The timing, substance, and retaliatory nature of the proposal sends a clear message: MLS does not respect or value players' efforts with regard to this tournament. Although not surprised, the players and the MLSPA are deeply disappointed by this message," the MLSPA said in a statement. MLS submitted the latest proposal on Friday, following a June 1 protest by several Seattle Sounders players, who wore shirts that read "Club World Cash Grab" and "Fair Share Now" in front of fans at Lumen Field in an attempt to bring attention to what they say is an unfair distribution of funds from the international tournament. FIFA announced each participant in the Club World Cup would receive $9.55 million with additional prize money depending on performance. The league says each club only has to collectively pay its players up to $1 million of the tournaments' prize money, per the current terms of the collective bargaining agreement. LAFC, Inter Miami CF and the Seattle Sounders are taking part in the Club World Cup, which starts Saturday and runs through July 13 across 11 U.S. cities. In a statement Sunday, the league said according to its enhanced proposal, 20 percent of all prize money earned from the group stage onward would be allocated to players. However, the MLSPA said in Sunday's statement that the latest offering of a 20 percent back-end compensation was "below the international standard." The MLSPA also said the latest proposal "did not add a single dollar for players from the $28,650,000 windfall that MLS will be paid by FIFA" and maintains the players' share of that amount "remains at barely 10% percent." Talks are expected to continue. "The League values the continued dedication and commitment of its players and looks forward to supporting them as they represent their clubs and Major League Soccer on the global stage this summer," the league's statement said.
