‘Drowning in…': Haryana CM Nayab Saini slams Bhagwant Mann's remarks on PM Modi, demands apology
Terming them "inappropriate" and an affront to democratic values and dignity of constitutional positions, Saini asked Mann to seek an apology from the nation.
The Punjab chief minister had on Thursday criticised Modi for celebrating an honour from a foreign country with just 10,000 population while neglecting the pressing issues of his own nation with 140 crore people.
Mann has faced flak from several BJP leaders for the comment.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has also expressed strong disapproval, calling the remarks "irresponsible".
Without naming Mann, the MEA said that the Government of India "disassociates" itself from the "unwarranted" comments made by a "high state authority" that undermined India's ties with friendly countries.
However, Mann raked up the issue again on Friday, this time in the state assembly, and asked Modi to "address the concerns" of 140 crore Indians.
On MEA's reaction, he asked whether he did not have the right to question a foreign policy.
Chiding Mann for his comments, Saini took to the microblogging site X on Friday night.
"Bhagwant Mann ji seems to have forgotten that he is commenting not only on the Prime Minister but also on the trust and leadership of 140 crore Indians. Instead of interfering in global politics, he should focus on his state, which is drowning in drug addiction, corruption and debt," he posted.
Saini said it is the result of Modi's efficient leadership and strong global policy that today, India is progressing shoulder to shoulder with developed nations worldwide.
"During a global pandemic like Corona, he not only acted as a shield to protect India but also delivered vaccines to many countries, and brought back Indians from abroad safely under the 'Vande Bharat Mission'," Saini wrote.
Referring to Mann's dig at Modi's foreign visits, Saini wrote that it is not only a violation of linguistic decorum but also an affront to democratic values and the dignity of constitutional positions.
"He should apologise to the nation for his inappropriate remarks," Saini wrote.
On Thursday, the Punjab chief minister had said, "Pradhan Mantri ji has gone to Ghana? Has he come back from Ghana? Will he come back today? He will be welcomed upon his return in the country...
"He is visiting Magneshia, Galveshia, Tarveshia (sic), we don't know where these are. (But) he is not staying in the country where 140 crore people live. These countries he visit have a population of 10,000, and he has got the biggest award there. Over here, that many people gather just to watch the JCB machine (earth-mover)," he said.
On Friday, participating in a debate in the Punjab assembly, Mann reiterated that the Prime Minister has no time to address the concerns of 140 crore Indians but has time to tour abroad.
"The MEA has reacted. Don't we have a right to ask the Prime Minister about his foreign policy? Do these countries that he visit support our nation afterwards? When our relation with Pakistan turned bad, did any of these countries stand by us?" an unfazed Mann asked.
Speaking to the media later in the day, Mann asked again, "Don't I have a right to question a foreign policy? What are you going there for? What have you done there? Tell us. Don't we have a right (to ask)?"
"I asked about a foreign policy under which wherever you (Modi) go, Adani's business starts there. It means that he takes him out there. Why don't you accept that you go there to get someone business? Don't we have the right to ask? We will ask. I will ask him this in future also," Mann had said.

Gadkari opens Rs 472-cr Sigandur bridge, CM and ministers boycott event
Shivamogga/Bengaluru: Union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari Monday inaugurated Sigandur bridge — India's second-longest cable-stayed structure — in Shivamogga district amid a political row as chief minister Siddaramaiah and his cabinet colleagues boycotted the event claiming they were invited at the last minute. The Rs 472-crore bridge, built over Sharavathi backwaters between Ambaragodlu and Kalasavalli in Sagar taluk, is expected to significantly cut travel time for devotees heading to Chowdeshwari temple in Sigandur, besides reconnecting villages cut off since the construction of Linganamakki dam in the 1960s. Gadkari, in a post on X, said an official invite was sent to the CM on July 11, followed by a letter on July 12, inviting his virtual presence. The CM acknowledged receiving the invite on July 11 but said "such last-minute communication cannot be considered due consultation". You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru In a strongly worded letter to PM Narendra Modi, Siddaramaiah criticized the Centre for organizing a programme in Karnataka without consulting the state govt. He said protocol was violated by printing the name of a former CM before the names of deputy CM, speaker of the Assembly and Chairman of legislative council. Proceeding with the event despite the state's explicit objection, he said, amounted to sheer arbitrariness and defied the spirit of cooperative federalism. Hours before the event, Siddaramaiah told reporters in Bengaluru, "As a mark of protest, none of us — PWD minister, district minister, Sagar MLA or I – are attending the inauguration. I had personally called Gadkari and asked him to postpone the programme. He said he would. But now, bowing to pressure from local BJP members, they went ahead with the event. I had a prescheduled event at Indi (in Vijayapura). It was scheduled a month ago and I'll be there. " Accusing the Centre of "deliberately" trying to create a rift between Centre and state, Siddaramaiah said, "It is they (Centre) who should invite us. Who started the friction? Protocol must be followed. The event is being held in our state, and we are in a federal system." Attaching the twin letters to his X post, Gadkari said, "The central govt continues to uphold established protocols... committed to cooperative federalism." About the controversy, deputy CM DK Shivakumar said, "The CM should have been informed well in advance. The state govt should have been taken into confidence. The CM has already said in a letter that his event in Indi taluk is also important. More than Rs 2,000 crore is being provided by the irrigation department." Asked if the oversight was deliberate, Shivakumar said, "Let's talk politics later." AICC general secretary in charge of Karnataka and Congress MP, Randeep Singh Surjewala, said "insulting" the people of Karnataka and Kannadigas has become a habit of BJP. "This is not just an insult to the chief minister, but to seven crore people of Karnataka." Shivamogga MP Raghavendra said he had "respectfully invited the CM" on July 9 and added, "I urge you to immediately retract your statement... this bridge is the result of six decades of struggle." Gadkari, cabinet colleague Pralhad Joshi, former chief minister BS Yediyurappa and BY Raghavendra participated in the ceremony. ++ STANDALONE QUOTE Neither I nor my office was consulted before your ministry finalised the Shivamogga event and circulated invitations with my name. The official invite reached us only on July 11, just three days before the event. My office immediately informed you of my prior commitment in Vijayapura and requested rescheduling. Such last-minute communication cannot be considered due consultation. True cooperative federalism requires meaningful coordination. I remain committed to working with the Union government for Karnataka's people and hope future engagements reflect mutual respect __Siddaramaiah | CM

Punjab assembly's sitting over, but not their war of words: Mann-Bajwa barbs continue outside house
1 2 Chandigarh: Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann and leader of opposition Partap Singh Bajwa continued to trade barbs outside the legislative on Monday, even as the debate on the anti-sacrilege Bill was postponed to Tuesday, the concluding day of the special assembly session. Speaking to media after the day's sitting, Mann criticised the opposition. "I presented the bill as the state home minister. It was being reported in the media that the bill is coming up, but leader of opposition Partap Singh Bajwa still said he did not have adequate information," said Mann. He added it was sad that Bajwa did not have information on sacrilege incidents in Bargari, Kot Kapura, and Jawaharke. "It is like a school student taking the alibi that he forgot the notebook at home. They come without proper homework. I hope whoever speaks on the issue, speaks from his heart. I hope that the bill will be unanimously passed. Punjab will be the first state to enact such a law. The Congress was not prepared today, hope they will come prepared tomorrow," he said. On the other hand, Bajwa slammed AAP govt for convening the special session without adequate preparation. He said that MLAs needed time to study the draft bill. "AAP promised to deliver justice, but it couldn't prepare the draft bill in its first three years. A similar bill was unanimously passed in 2018," he said. "MLAs received the draft 15 minutes before its tabling. These are technical and legal matters," he added. Responding to Mann's comments, Bajwa said the CM needed to be serious on the issue. "The point for holding discussion on the bill on Tuesday was made in the meeting of representatives of all parties. It was the view of other parties as well," he added. He also noted that his party had sought a two-day extension of the special assembly session to discuss the land pooling policy and the issue of law and order, but no time had been allocated to these issues.

Govt cornered on exam bungling; Cong seeks CBI probe, walks out
Raipur: The Opposition Congress staged a walkout in the on the first day of the monsoon session on Monday, over alleged irregularities in the RI examination, demanding a CBI probe into the matter. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Replying to the concerns raised during the Question Hour, revenue minister Tankram Verma admitted anomalies and informed that the case is with the EOW, assuring strict action against the guilty before the next session. The din in the assembly concerned the alleged irregularities in the departmental examination for Revenue Inspectors (RI). BJP MLA Rajesh Munat raised the issue, claiming it occurred under the previous Congress govt, while the opposition countered that the exam took place under the current BJP administration in Jan 2024, with results declared in Feb. Congress MLA and former chief minister Bhupesh Baghel demanded the CBI probe. Revenue minister Tankram Verma acknowledged the irregularities and said a five-member committee confirmed it. He informed that the case was handed over to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) for a detailed probe and promised action before the next Assembly session. Heated exchanges between ruling and opposition members over responsibility and delay in action led to a walkout by Opposition MLAs. On the other hand, BJP MLA Ajay Chandrakar questioned the decision to transfer the probe to the EOW, to which Verma replied that the department itself referred the matter. MLA Munat highlighted that the examination was conducted barely a week after the minister took charge of the department. He questioned why no action was taken despite the investigation by a team of five senior officers confirming irregularities. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Verma responded that the inquiry committee concluded that the presented documents did not fall under the category of evidence and the EOW is currently investigating. Former chief minister Bhupesh Baghel inquired whether the examination took place before or after the current BJP govt came to power. Verma confirmed that the examination was held in Jan 2024 and the results were declared in Feb. This response led to a strong protest in the Assembly, with opposition MLAs accusing the BJP govt of irregularities. Baghel alleged attempts to shield the culprits and asked if the matter would be investigated by the CBI. BJP MLA Dharamlal Kaushik retorted, asking if Baghel trusted the CBI. Following this, the Opposition staged a walkout from the Assembly. Earlier, BJP MLA Munat had asked the minister about the status of the home department's inquiry, when action would be taken against the culprits, and the total number of candidates who appeared for the examination. The minister informed the Assembly that even siblings were found seated together in the examination. The general administration department had written to the home department for an inquiry, which in turn responded that the concerned department was competent to handle the matter. The case has now been handed over to the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) as part of the govt's stand on a 'zero' tolerance policy on corruption, and an investigation commenced. Verma affirmed that no one would be spared, and action would be taken against those found guilty, similar to the ongoing inquiry into irregularities in the Bharatmala project. The revenue minister also said that the recruitment would provide necessary staff to the revenue department, streamlining its operations. Tributes Offered To Former Governor & Ex-Cabinet Minister from CG Earlier, the Assembly paid tribute to former Chhattisgarh governor Shekhar Dutt and Surendra Bahadur Singh, the former king of Sakti princely state and ex-cabinet minister, following their demise.
