2025 College Football Predictions, Picks: Back Georgia Tech, Utah in Week 1
I know I'm not the only one. I think we all started marking the days on the calendar as soon as Ohio State won it all back in January.
Considering we're only a little more than a month out, I figured I'd go ahead and look at some games to sprinkle a little cash on.
There are two so far that have caught my eye for Week 1. Let's dive into how I'm wagering Georgia Tech-Colorado and Utah-UCLA.
Georgia Tech @ Colorado (+3.5)
Entering the 2025 season, I'm high on Georgia Tech and selling on Colorado.
This number does not reflect my feelings about the talent and execution difference between those two teams, even factoring in that this game is being played in Colorado.
Let's start with Georgia Tech, which finished 7-5 (regular season) in head coach Brent Key's second full season.
Key is a former offensive lineman and his team plays like that. The Yellow Jackets are physical on both sides of the ball and try to impose their will on their opponents.
Look no further than their win against Miami last season or the 44-42 loss to Georgia in the final game of the regular season. They can routinely play with the big boys.
Quarterback Haynes King is back for this season. He led the ACC in completion percentage and added nearly 600 yards on the ground. Lead back Jamal Haynes returns after rushing for 1,000 yards, and while Georgia Tech does have to replace some offensive linemen, this is where I trust the head coach. He has developed that position well everywhere he's been.
On defense, Georgia Tech is led by new defensive coordinator Blake Gibson from Texas. The Jackets must replace multiple starting defensive linemen but have added transfer players that they hope will help the unit start fast. The Jackets return a veteran secondary and are in the top 40 for returning production on defense.
I'd expect this unit to be prepared for Colorado.
Colorado is undergoing roster turnover again.
The Buffaloes have to replace their quarterback, their top four receiving targets and four offensive linemen on offense. Some might point to them upgrading the offensive line and, while I don't disagree, there are still lots of questions on offense.
They aren't as talented at quarterback or receiver and the offense relied heavily on the production of Shedeur Sanders, and his receiving core. It's not an offense that's designed for easy plays and Colorado has yet to commit to the run in two seasons.
Colorado's defense was much improved last season under first-time defensive coordinator Rob Livingston. I do not think enough attention was given to this unit, which was an outstanding second-half squad. However, Colorado is down lots of production, just like on offense.
The Buffs are without their best pass rusher, both linebackers, both safeties and a Heisman-winning corner.
How do you replace that much production without a base of high school players that you have developed?
There's so much new for the Buffaloes, and I don't believe they will be ready to play Georgia Tech's brand of football in Week 1. New players on defense will need to stop a highly efficient quarterback and that Tech run game.
On offense, Colorado is breaking in so many new players against a veteran Tech secondary. Can the Buffs get up to speed quickly to make enough plays? I just don't buy it. I like Georgia Tech to win and cover.
PICK: Georgia Tech (-3.5) to win by 3.5 points or more
Utah @ UCLA (+5.5)
I'm also high on the Utes this season, and I'm starting by wagering on them in Week 1.
This is a road game, but it's Labor Day Weekend at the Rose Bowl. Utah played the last two seasons with a roster ravaged by injuries. Quarterback Cam Rising played three games the last two seasons after injuring his knee in the 2023 Rose Bowl. That forced Utah to play at least five different quarterbacks in 2023 and 2024, and the results were ugly.
Utah went into the portal to grab New Mexico quarterback Devon Dampier, a first-team All-Mountain West selection.
The Utes also added New Mexico's offensive coordinator, who led the Lobos to finishing first in the country in yards per carry. It's a perfect fit for Utah, which has got one of the best offensive lines in the country.
Both tackles will be first-round picks. Utah's rushing attack is going to face a UCLA defense replacing nine starters.
The Bruins did add some portal players, but they haven't recruited at a level that will help them reload that quickly.
It's always fair to question Utah's passing attack and that could be a concern this season, but I don't see it mattering much here. The Utes will control the line of scrimmage and score on UCLA.
UCLA made headlines this spring when it landed former five-star Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava, a talented player who is also inconsistent.
He will compete with App State transfer Joey Aguilar for the starting job.
The Bruins have decent receiving options and some transfer talent at running back. Their offensive line was brutal last season and they will replace three starters. Just like the rest of their roster, the Bruins are hoping to patch the holes on the line with portal guys.
Utah's defense has been its calling card for years and I don't doubt it will change this season. The Utes are replacing their defensive line, but they've shown the ability to reload that position year after year. They return experience at linebacker and in the secondary. And their defense should win the matchup against the Bruins' offense.
Utah is more talented and has a more cohesive approach than UCLA. I like Utah to cruise in this game.
PICK: Utah (-5.5) to win by more than 5.5 points

In some cases, talent doesn't equate to money. For others, however, constant production has certainly led to big pay days. This offseason has been one for the books, and a lot of money has exchanged hands this summer. He signed a five-year extension worth $260 million in April 2023 and followed that up with an MVP-winning season. He then improved once again in 2024, throwing for a career-high 4,172 yards and 41 touchdowns last season, although he fell short of a third MVP award. He signed a five-year, $265 million deal in May, and now that he has his long-term money, it's time to show that he can lead a team. It'll be especially important for the 49ers' success this season, as they moved on from wide receiver Deebo Samuel and will be without wideout Brandon Aiyuk until at least Week 6. It was a respectable nod from the Lions, who rebuilt around Goff and are now contending with him at the epicenter of their system. Last season, Goff led the Lions to a franchise-best 15 wins, throwing for 4,629 yards and a career-high 37 touchdowns. It'll be interesting to see how Goff fairs now that former offensive coordinator Ben Johnson has moved on to become the Chicago Bears' head coach. (Photo by) Tagovailoa signed his four-year, $212 million extension in July 2024 following a season in which he threw for a career-high 4,624 yards and 29 touchdowns, but his career has been marred by a bevvy of unfortunate concussions, and he sustained one last season that forced him to miss four games early in the season. When he returned, he wasn't his normal, dynamic self, as his yards per pass attempt dropped to 7.1 and his yards per completion dropped to 9.5. (Photo by) Lawrence was one of those players whose production dipped after he signed a big extension — after inking a five-year, $275 million deal in July 2024, he threw for a career-low 204.5 yards per game. His season was shortened to just 10 games by a pair of injuries (an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder and a concussion), but those injuries came after the dip in play, so it'll be interesting if Lawrence can return to the form he showed early in his career. It'll help to have a new coaching regime in Jacksonville — with offensive-minded head coach Liam Coen coming over from Tampa Bay. (Photo by) After signing a five-year, $275 million deal, Burrow played just 10 games in the 2023 season because of a wrist injury. Last year, though, he reminded everyone just how valuable he is, leading the NFL with 4,918 yards and 43 passing touchdowns — numbers that certainly would have won him MVP honors had his team not severely underachieved. (Photo by) The Packers took a leap of faith, signing Love to a four-year, $220 million deal after just one season with him as their starter. It was a pretty impressive campaign in 2023; Love threw for 4,159 yards and 32 touchdowns and led the Packers to the NFC divisional round. Things came back down to earth in 2024, however, as Love threw for 3,389 yards and 25 scores. He was playing through an MCL sprain and a groin injury, so that could be to blame for the dip in play. This season, he'll have to prove if it truly was the injuries holding him back from being a perennial superstar. (Photo by) Allen, one of the most talented quarterbacks in the league, won the 2024 NFL MVP award after signing a six-year, $330 million extension with the Bills in the offseason. Last season was especially impressive for Allen because he lost top wide receiver Stefon Diggs and still shined with a combined 40 touchdowns. The only thing missing from Allen's résumé is a Super Bowl appearance — and victory. (Photo by) It's fitting that Prescott tops this list, as he is the quarterback for the NFL's most extravagant team. It's also ironic, as owner Jerry Jones isn't exactly complying to pay another one of their stars, Micah Parsons. Prescott signed a four-year, $240 million deal on the first Sunday of the 2024 NFL season. Maybe Jones will do the same with Parsons this season? Prescott was impressive in the season before signing his extension. In 2023, he completed an NFL-best 410 passes, and led the league with 36 touchdowns. Last year, however, his completion percentage dropped five points to 64.7%. He threw for a career-low 10.7 yards per completion, before sustaining a season-ending hamstring injury. With the addition of wide receiver George Pickens to a receiving core that already has CeeDee Lamb, Prescott should have every opportunity to show why he's the highest-paid quarterback in the league this season. Nuggets' starting lineup shakeup expected to pay off next season originally appeared on The Sporting News The Denver Nuggets have been one of the most interesting teams in the league this offseason, and it might pay off in a big way. Last season, the Nuggets saw their season end in a Game 7 of the second round for the second straight year. Following some massive changes toward the end of the regular season, the Nuggets did their best to make some noise in the playoffs. With a full offseason to prepare for next season, the Nuggets' new front office made some big moves. While the team improved its depth and even gave Nikola Jokic the best backup center of his career, the Nuggets' headline-stealing move was sending Michael Porter Jr. and a pick to the Brooklyn Nets for Cam Johnson While Porter was a generally reliable player, Johnson should bring a more team-oriented style of play to go with a similar outside shooting prowess. Add in Johnson's ability to play multiple positions as well, and he could end up being one of the best additions of the entire offseason. That same conclusion was made by Bleacher Report's Zach Buckley, who expects the Johnson deal to be viewed as one of the best of 2025 by this time next summer. Buckley explained that this move was simply a perfect way to add some help for Jokic and company without truly sacrificing anything major. Although Johnson might not be a step up from Porter in counting stats, what Johnson provides on both ends should easily make up for any decrease in numbers from the starting forward spot.
