Malegaon blast case verdict out, Pragya Thakur among all 7 accused acquitted
Former BJP MP MP Pragya Singh Thakur was among all seven accused acquitted by a special NIA court in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, in Mumbai on Thurday. Former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur at the special NIA court in Mumbai.(HT File) On September 29, 2008, six people were killed and around 100 were injured when an explosive device detonated near a mosque in Malegaon city in Maharashtra. Judge AK Lahoti pronounced the verdict and said the prosecution indeed proved that a blast occurred in Malegaon, but failed to prove that a bomb was placed in a particular motorcycle. "The bike allegedly involved in the blast did not have a clear chassis number. Prosecution could not prove that it was in (Pragya Thakur's) possession immediately before the blast," said the court, as per news agency ANI. Further pointing towards apparent holes in the probe, the court said, 'No sketch of the spot was done by the investigation officer while doing the panchnama. No fingerprint, dump data or anything else was collected for the spot. The samples were contaminated, so the reports can't be conclusive and are not reliable." 'There is no evidence of storing or assembling the explosives in Shrikant Prasad Purohit's residence,' the court said, as per ANI, also acquitting Lt Colonel Purohit. It added that anti-terror law UAPA could not be invoked in this case as 'sanction was not taken as per rules'. "Both the sanction orders of the UAPA in the case are defective," said the court. The court came to the conclusion that the injured people were not 101 but 95 only, and there was manipulation in some medical certificates too. The case was transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2011 from the Maharashtra ATS. All of the accused were currently out on bail.

2008 Malegaon bomb blast: All 7 accused acquitted, court says prosecution failed to provide cogent and reliable evidence
All seven accused, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit, facing trial for the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast, were Thursday acquitted by a special court in Mumbai. Pragya Singh Thakur and Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit, Major (retired) Ramesh Upadhyay, Ajay Rahirkar, Sameer Kulkarni, Sudhakar Chaturvedi, and Sudhakar Dhardwivedi were cleared of all charges, including criminal conspiracy and murder under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections of the anti-terror law, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Special Judge A K Lahoti, who pronounced all seven not guilty, noted the prosecution proved the blast but failed to establish that a bomb was fitted in the motorcycle. 'Conspiracy and meetings also have not been proved. Interception of calls not authorised. Both sanction orders to invoke are defective, UAPA cannot be invoked, ' the court said. The court said that the prosecution failed to provide cogent and reliable evidence, and also failed to establish guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. There might be strong suspicion against the accused, but it is not enough to punish them, said the court. The court also ordered compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast victims, and Rs 50,000 to the injured victims to be given by the government. The detailed order of the court is yet to be made available. On September 29, 2008, a bomb went off at a chowk in Malegaon, a town known for its power loom industry, about 100 km northeast of Nashik in Maharashtra. The blast, which took place in an area with a sizeable Muslim population, killed six people and injured 100 during Ramzan, the holy month of fasting in Islam.

TMC counters cops over ‘linguistic terror', brings migrant family to Bengal
NEW DELHI: A day after the Delhi Police dismissed a viral video shared by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as 'baseless and fabricated,' the Trinamool Congress (TMC) presented the migrant family featured in the video at its Kolkata office on Monday to counter the narrative. The family, originally from Malda and residing in Delhi for over two decades, appeared at a press conference alongside TMC leaders including MPs Mausam Noor and Samirul Islam, Minister Firhad Hakim, and spokesperson Kunal Ghosh. The woman in the video, Sajnur Parveen, accused the Delhi Police of harassment, abuse, and extortion. 'Four men in plain clothes came asking for my Aadhaar and my husband's whereabouts. I was called Bangladeshi, slapped, kicked in the stomach, and asked to chant 'Jai Shri Ram.' They demanded Rs 25,000, and the next day, we were picked up, tortured, and forced to sign documents,' she said.
