LONDON: A man who helped his brother plot a suicide bomb attack at the end of an Ariana Grande concert in Britain in 2017 was charged on Wednesday with attempting to murder prison guards in the jail where he was being held.
Hashem Abedi, the elder brother of Salman Abedi who killed 22 people at the Manchester Arena in northern England, was charged with five offenses following an incident in April this year at HMP Frankland jail when four prison officers were injured, British police said.
He is accused of three counts of attempted murder, one of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and one count of unauthorized possession of a knife. He is due to appear at London's Westminster Magistrates Court on September 18.
Hashem Abedi was jailed for at least 55 years in 2020 after being convicted of helping his brother plan the attack which injured more than 200 and whose victims included seven children.
The brothers, born to Libyan parents who emigrated to Britain during the rule of late leader Muammar Qaddafi, had plotted the attack at their home in south Manchester, prosecutors said.

Young women in UK face more strangulation and violent threats, says charity

LONDON: Britain is seeing more violent threats to kill or harm young women and girls aged 16-25, with incidents of strangulation and suffocation also increasing, leading domestic abuse charity Refuge said on Wednesday. Refuge, one of the largest specialist domestic abuse organizations in Britain, said 525 young women and girls receiving long-term support from the charity reported experiencing physical violence between April 2024 and March 2025. Around half of them were subjected to strangulation or suffocation — a 9 percent rise from a year earlier. Nearly half of those reporting psychological abuse — about 615 individuals — said their perpetrator had threatened to harm them, marking a 4 percent increase. Additionally, 35 percent said they had been threatened with death. 'Domestic abuse often goes unnoticed, yet these new figures reveal the harrowing reality: many young lives are being devastated by this horrific crime,' said Refuge CEO Gemma Sherrington. 'To actively tackle domestic abuse, there must be a major societal shift toward improved education that shines a light on the many red flags of abuse.' Refuge said many young victims were experiencing coercive control, a pattern of behavior designed to isolate, manipulate, and intimidate. Survivors quoted in Refuge's report described how abuse often began with subtle controlling behaviors and escalated over time. Such behaviors can often be overlooked by authorities as markers of domestic abuse. Reuters reported on Wednesday that Britain would reassess a tool widely used by the police and domestic abuse specialist services to gauge the level of risk faced by victims following criticism that, among other issues, it downplays patterns of coercive and controlling behavior. Refuge has called for domestic abuse education to be more deeply embedded in schools and for the government's upcoming strategy on violence against women and girls to strengthen support for young people.

UK police allowed to disclose suspects' ethnicity to counter misinformation

British police have been given the authority to release details of a suspect's ethnicity and nationality in high-profile and sensitive cases to prevent the spread of false information on social media. The move follows last year's riots in Southport after misinformation circulated online that the teenage suspect in the murder of three young girls was an extremist migrant. The issue remains politically charged, with the populist Reform UK party—currently leading in opinion polls—accusing police last week of concealing the immigration status of suspects in the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl in central England. Under new guidance from the National Police Chiefs' Council and the College of Policing, forces will be encouraged to release such details 'to reduce the risk to public safety' when misinformation is being spread. A Home Office spokesperson said they supported the change and would approve the release of relevant immigration information in future cases where appropriate.
