Two cops granted R3000 bail over truck looting incident

Limpopo police have intensified their investigation into the looting of a cargo truck carrying washing powder, arresting two more suspects, bringing the total to five, including three officers implicated in the crime.
Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that two more suspects, aged 39 and 51, were arrested at their homes on July 25 for their role in the July 14 looting of washing powder from a cargo truck. The pair are members of the public who allegedly took part in the brazen theft.
Previously, The Star reported on how a cargo truck transporting washing powder veered off the road, causing its load to spill onto the road.
As the driver attempted to manage the scene, chaos broke out, with bystanders, two police officers, and a SAPS cleaner allegedly seen helping themselves to the scattered goods.
Instead of assisting, the officers reportedly loaded the detergent into a marked police vehicle and drove off, ignoring the driver's pleas to stop the looting. The driver, however, managed to gather critical information, which helped spark an investigation and led to several arrests.
Some of the stolen items were later found at the residence of one of the implicated police officers.
Ledwaba added that the three suspects, all employed by SAPS in Modimolle, were arrested for theft and defeating the ends of justice. They have since appeared in the Modimolle Magistrate's Court on July 25, where they were each granted bail. Their next court appearance is set for October 2.
"Warrant Officer Frans Ndlovu (55) and Warrant Officer Lesiba Boya (49) were granted bail of R3000 each. Meanwhile, Cleaner Lucas Moima (50) was granted R5000 bail. They will appear again on 02 October 2025 for further Police investigation."
The two newly arrested suspects are expected to appear in the local Magistrate's Court on Monday, 28 July 2025, to face theft charges.

JOHANNESBURG - A crime scene expert in the Lusikisiki Massacre trial has told the Mthatha High Court, in the Eastern Cape, that 30 bullet cartridges were collected from the deadly scene. The investigating officer is part of four forensic officers who were deployed to Ngobozana village in September last year, when the incident occurred. Eighteen people were shot and killed while gathered for a family tombstone unveiling. To date, six men have been charged for the brutal murders. He testified that he and his team arrived in Ngobozana hours after the shooting and started processing the crime scene, including photographing the victims. He painted a picture of how they found some of them on top of each other, covered in blood. Going through the photo album, he told the court that most of them sustained gunshot wounds in their upper bodies, including the head, shoulder, neck and arms. The warrant officer said about 30 bullet cartridges were recovered from the scene, as well as four bullet fragments and three bullets. The court has also learnt that all of the shots came from a high-calibre firearm.

SAPS urged to address misinformation on farm attacks and genocide claims
The Institute for Security Studies says police and agricultural unions should correct misinformation and the false narrative regarding genocide and farm murders in South Africa. Image: David Ritchie, ANA The SAPS, agricultural unions and private security firms have been requested to debunk and correct the misinformation and false narratives circulating on social media and other platforms on farm attacks in South Africa. A policy brief released by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) found that there is no evidence of any form of genocide taking place in the country. The institute added that white people are statistically less at risk of violent crime than other racial groups as it explains why the country is so violent and why there is no evidence of a genocide. This comes after the US State Department's Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) claimed that attacks on farms display a distinctly brutal pattern. The bureau claimed that these were not ordinary crimes, adding that in some documented cases, reports detail victims tortured or killed without anything being stolen. The bureau said local sources reported 296 farm attacks and 49 murders in 2023, adding that victims are disproportionately elderly, isolated and face delayed police response. AfriForum said the report confirmed what the organisation had been emphasising for years, that farm attacks are not ordinary crimes. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ The organisation added that farm attacks are brutal, targeted attacks that are often accompanied by torture, murder without anything being stolen and politically charged rhetoric such as the 'Kill the Boer' slogan. However, the ISS, through its policy brief, found that a vast majority of farm attacks were motivated by robbery, not racial hatred, saying agricultural unions, the SAPS, private security and community leaders should actively counter misinformation and false narratives circulating via social media and other platforms. AfriForum's chief spokesperson for Community Safety, Jacques Broodryk, said it has never been the organisation's position that there is genocide taking place in South Africa, adding their position is that there are unique elements to farm attacks that justify classifying it a 'priority crime', in the same way that taxi violence, gender based violence and illegal mining are classified as 'priority crimes' due to their unique nature. 'There are however genocidal calls made by influential figures such as the chanting of Kill the Boer, Kill the farmer. The chanting of the slogan has been directly linked to attacks on farms. If one however looks at the US's legal definition of genocide, it is understandable why US officials can refer to farm attacks as a genocide,' he said. ISS added that of the 49 who were killed on farms in 2023, not all victims were farmers, adding that the figure represents 0.2% of 27,621 murders reported during that period. 'Half of all murders in South Africa occurred in just 12% of police precincts. Most of these high murder areas are townships in metropolitan areas inhabited largely by black residents,' the institution said. Agri SA executive officer Johann Kotze declined to comment. Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said she was waiting for a response from her colleagues. The ISS said the idea of a 'white genocide' has been around for many years, propagated by fringe or extremist groups. However, there is no credible evidence to support claims of a 'white genocide' or any form of genocide taking place in South Africa. It added that multiple independent investigations have found no systematic or organised targeting of white people or farmers based on race or ethnicity, nor any indication that attacks aim to destroy an ethnic group or drive farmers from their land. 'These investigations include the 2003 Committee of Inquiry into Farm Attacks and the 2014 South African Human Rights Commission National Investigative Hearings into Safety and Security Challenges in Farming Communities,' ISS said. The institute added that South Africa's crime statistics show that most armed violent crime occurs in urban areas, mostly in public spaces such as streets or parks, but also in homes and businesses. 'Murder victimisation correlates more with class, gender and location than race. Lower income and high inequality are linked to higher rates of crime and violence. About half of all murders take place in just 12% of SAPS precincts, and 20% in fewer than 3% of stations – 30 in total,' said the ISS, adding that these areas are mostly townships or poor urban communities, mostly populated by coloured or black African people.

Ga-Rankuwa police heighten alert after carjacking attempt
A recent attempted carjacking in Ga-Rankuwa has prompted local police to warn residents about crime hotspots in the area. In shared CCTV footage, a car is seen being blocked on its path by armed suspects wearing balaclavas, who then shoot at it. According to Ga-Rankuwa SAPS spokesperson, Shimi Tsheole, the incident happened on the afternoon of August 5. 'The carjacking attempt occurred at around 16:34 near the Ga-Rankuwa Cemetery,' he said. He said the victim was driving from work when she allegedly encountered a car with armed occupants wearing balaclavas. 'It is alleged that [the] complainant was driving from work to home when encountering a silver KIA with occupants wearing balaclavas and with firearms,' he said. He added the suspects tried to block the victim's path before she could reverse her vehicle and flee the scene. 'The said suspects fired two shots at the victim as per the complaint received by the police.' He said no suspect has been arrested, however, police are investigating a case of attempted carjacking and attempted murder. 'No suspects have been identified, therefore no arrests have been made so far. Investigation in this matter is still at an early stage,' he said. Following the incident, Tsheole raised concern over increasing in crime in parts of Ga-Rankuwa. 'SAPS Ga-Rankuwa is however concerned with the increase in crime at a mountain along the M17 Road opposite Sefako Makgatho University,' he said. He said crimes such as carjacking and armed robberies are more prevalent in that area. 'The place is a hunting ground for criminals. Police appeal to members of the community to refrain from using the mountain as a praying area,' he cautioned. He added that Zone 14 is also a hotspot for crime, and the precinct usually experiences an increase in crime from Thursday to Sunday. 'Station commander Brigadier [Paballo] Nkosi increased her crime prevention operations around those areas, resulting in a significant decline in cases reported,' he said. He added that intervention by the Tshwane District Commissioner, Major-General Samuel Thine, through Operation Shanela is also playing a role in the decrease of crime in the areas.
