Hot weather prompts Johor to ease uniform rules for religious school students, says state exco
Johor Islamic Religious Affairs Committee chairman Mohd Fared Mohd Khalid said there were no issues regarding the implementation, as the state government had authorised the District Islamic Education Office (PPID) to determine the appropriate attire.
He said similar measures had been implemented before and could be reintroduced when necessary.
'In Johor, students are required to wear baju Melayu, so having looser clothing makes it more practical, especially during the current weather,' he said after closing the Johor State-Level Mahabbah Komuniti Madani Carnival at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) today.
On the programme, Mohd Fared said it was a strategic collaboration among various parties aimed at reaching out to the community, particularly the youth, to provide a clearer understanding of increasingly complex social and religious issues. — Bernama

Television footage from various communities in Kumamoto prefecture showed houses, stores and vehicles submerged in about 1m of water. Surging rivers swept away vehicles and damaged roads. More than 40cm of rain fell over 12 hours in Kumamoto prefecture's hardest-hit Tamana city, a record for the area according to Japan's meteorological agency (JMA). By this morning, evacuation advisories and warnings were issued to more than three million residents in the southwestern regions, the fire and disaster management agency said. While the most severe warnings were lifted in all areas, lower-level alerts including some evacuation advisories remained in the evening. Although heavy rain in Kumamoto has slowed, active rain fronts could cover other parts of Japan at any time, Shuichi Tachihara, chief of forecasting at JMA, told a televised press conference. 'Heavy rainfall to date has loosened the ground in some areas and caused water levels to rise in some rivers,' he said. 'The risk of disasters may increase again in the future, even with less rainfall. Please continue to be extremely vigilant for landslides, and be aware of rising river levels and flooding.' Local media said this afternoon that emergency workers found one person unresponsive in Kosa town in Kumamoto, near a place where a man had gone missing earlier in the day. He disappeared in a landslide which hit when he was standing outside his home, while his wife and two children were safely inside their car, Kumamoto's RKK television station said. The town's officials could not immediately confirm the report. In Misato town, also in Kumamoto, an elderly man was rescued after being trapped inside his house when it was struck by a landslide. 'The rain was so heavy that I couldn't see what was in front of me for four to five hours,' Misato town official Kazuhiro Masunaga told AFP. Two people in Fukuoka city were swept away in a surging river yesterday and remained missing, national broadcaster NHK reported.

Air Selangor: Sungai Way burst pipe repairs to finish by 9pm tonight
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 — Work to repair a burst pipe in Sungai Way, near the cable bridge along the Federal Highway/Damansara-Puchong Highway (LDP) intersection, is expected to be completed by 9pm tonight. According to an Air Selangor spokesperson, as of 4pm today, 60 per cent of the repair work on the 600-millimeter asbestos cement pipe has been completed. 'The issue was caused by a burst in an old pipe. Repair work began at 9.45 pm last Saturday and is expected to be completed by 9pm tonight. 'The delay was due to the damaged pipeline being quite long, about 25 metres, and the presence of multiple utility pipelines at the site, which made excavation challenging,' the spokesperson said when contacted by Bernama. The burst pipe caused water supply disruptions in several areas, including SS 7, Glenmarie Golf & Country Club, PJU 1A Kelana Idaman, SS 3, Hyatt Saujana/Saujana Glenmarie, Jalan U1/13, Citta Mall, and Taman Perindustrian Hicom Glenmarie. Air Selangor has deployed nine water tankers to assist residents in the affected areas since 8 am yesterday. Alternative water supply via tankers will continue until the repair work is completed and normal water service is fully restored. — Bernama

Kuching residents brace for overnight water supply disruption from Aug 13 amid pipeline repairs
KUCHING, Aug 11 — Consumers in several areas here are expected to experience low water pressure or a temporary water supply disruption from 9pm on August 13 to 8am on August 14 due to pipeline repair works along Jalan Matang–Batu Kawa. The affected areas are Jalan Matang (Kubah Ria to Mile 9), Taman Sri Harmoni, Jalan Sungai Tengah, Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yakub, Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Muhammad Salahuddin, Jalan Demak, Jalan Bako, Muara Tebas, Petra Jaya and surrounding JBALB areas. In a statement today, Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd (SWSB) Southern Region Office said a 750mm diameter Mild Steel Cement Lined (MSCL) pumping main along Jalan Matang–Batu Kawa, near Emart Moyan, experienced its first-ever burst on August 6. The incident affected the treated water supply to areas including Batu Kawa, Moyan, Jalan Batu Kawa–Malihah, Matang Jaya, Petra Jaya, Demak Laut, JBALB Semariang and surrounding areas. SWSB Southern Region Office said its team responded promptly to isolate the leak, preventing further damage to the roadway, underground utilities and infrastructure. Repair work was successfully completed on August 7, ahead of the initially scheduled timeline. Following the repairs, immediate flushing was carried out to restore clean water supply to affected areas including Batu Kawa, Moyan, Matang Jaya, Petra Jaya and surrounding areas. 'Unscheduled repair works on the 1100mm diameter MSCL pumping main, which were temporarily halted at 3.30am on August 6 due to dewatering challenges, site conditions and technical constraints, are set to resume once all preparatory steps are completed. 'The pipeline was dislocated, with welding completed on approximately three-quarters of its circumference. Persistent leakage at the bottom section requires full rectification,' explained SWSB Southern Region Office. To minimise delays, SWSB Southern Region Office has proactively fabricated the necessary fittings locally and is addressing the issues on-site. These two pumping mains are supplying directly to the Bukit Siol reservoir. Reservoir levels at Bukit Siol, Datu Muda, Pending, and Mile 9 3/4 are being built up to satisfactory levels to prevent widespread water pressure issues during the repair process. SWSB Southern Region Office said water tankers will be mobilised to the affected areas and advised consumers to store sufficient water before the scheduled repair window. It assured consumers that efforts are being made to minimise disruptions and restore a stable water supply, adding: 'We appreciate your understanding and patience during this period.' — The Borneo Post
