Nick Daicos offers explanation after Kane Cornes floats ugly theory around Brownlow Medal
Daicos copped a knock against the Suns two weeks ago, but managed to finish the game. He then spent a large chunk of time at half-back against Fremantle, which the Pies lost by a point for their second-straight defeat.
Daicos didn't look hampered against the Dockers, racking up a career-high 43 disposals. But Channel 7 commentator Kane Cornes questioned whether some of the Collingwood players were pushing through for 'selfish' reasons.
'Nick is sore, clearly sore and has been throughout the year,' Cornes said on Channel 7 program 'The Agenda Setters'. 'Is he playing for a Brownlow?
'My theory is that those players are not being managed to get themselves right to win a second or a third premiership in (Scott) Pendlebury's case. Are they playing for individual reasons more so than getting themselves right when they need to be right (in September)?'
Cornes suggested Daicos might be trying to garner as many Brownlow votes as possible, rather than resting with the bigger picture of finals footy in mind. But speaking to Channel 7 on Tuesday night, the midfielder explained why he hasn't taken a break.
Nick Daicos opens up on decision to keep playing
Daicos said he feels much better when continuing to play, as it means he doesn't have to build himself back up after a rest. 'I'm feeling really good,' he told 7News Melbourne. 'My body likes continuity and just to continue being out there playing is the main thing for me. Body's feeling really good. It's a good time to be feeling good coming into finals so just need to stay on top of everything.'
Nick Daicos has declared he doesn't need a rest as the Pies close in on September. The Brownlow Medal favourite spoke exclusively to @XanderMcGuire7 on Collingwood's path back to premiership glory. https://t.co/5zYfOfGqUb @7AFL #7NEWS pic.twitter.com/7E0zvDaKdY

Daicos pointed out that after two losses on the bounce, the Pies are no guarantee to keep the top spot. Brisbane are now just two points in arrears, while Adelaide are only four points back.
'Definitely doesn't feel like we have a comfortable buffer,' Daicos said. 'I know the boys are keen to continue playing ... ultimately we need to be playing good footy going into the finals. We've got to continue to win and put ourselves in the best position going into finals."

Coach rejects Harley Reid claim as Hinkley wows with Ginnivan response
Speaking after their loss to the Dockers, Collingwood coach Craig McRae said he's worried his team might have lost some of their 'spark' in close games. Their one-point loss to Freo came nine days after they fell six points short against the Suns - an uncharacteristic trait under McRae.
"This is not something you've ever got handled because every game is opportunity," McRae said in his post-game press conference. "Managing those moments will forever be something we need to do. If the scoreboard is an indication, we haven't managed it well enough (in the last two weeks).
"We've lost three close games this year. Have we lost our spark? You'd hope not. But reality is, we'll keep getting better at it. I'd rather learn these lessons now."

Knights roll on, celebrate home Magic Round with a win
Newcastle have celebrated hosting the NRLW's first Magic Round by securing their fourth straight win. In front of a hometown crowd the Knights triumphed 18-0 over a luckless Canberra side, while the Warriors and Parramatta returned to the winner's circle on Sunday. The milestones continued at McDonald Jones Stadium with the first scoreless half of the eight-year competition between the hosts and Raiders, and a favourable bounce from the left upright keeping Jesse Southwell's perfect goal-kicking record this season (21 from 21) intact. On Saturday, the first drawn game eventuated between Gold Coast and Canterbury (14-all) and it was the first time games had been stopped by lightning. Newcastle fans sat uncomfortably in their seats as the winless Raiders held the two-time premiers to 0-0 at halftime. But the Knights kicked into gear after the break with tries to winger Sheridan Gallagher and prop Tiana Davison – both with Southwell in the thick of the action. What a try to open the scoresheet 🔥 Telstra Moment of the Match. — NRLW (@NRLWomens) August 3, 2025 A third Knights try to hooker Olivia Higgins, after sustained pressure on the Raiders line, sealed the result. "We knew it was a game we were going to have to grind and we were up for the battle," said Newcastle captain Yasmin Clydsdale. Canberra coach Darren Borthwick said that despite the 0-5 start to the season there was a lot of belief in his team. "It's still not the result we want but they keep turning up for each other and I feel there's light at the end of the tunnel for them," he said. North Queensland coach Ricky Henry said his side were "out-enthused" by the Warriors, going down 12-6 and throwing away the chance to grab a third straight win. The Cowboys took a 6-0 lead through a Rosie Kelly try in the ninth minute, but that was as good as it got. "Our intent wasn't there today – we got out-enthused," he said. After wins over Cronulla and Canberra, the Cowboys showed none of their customary grit and fightback. Halfback Kirra Dibb is still sitting on the sidelines after being dropped three weeks ago, but Henry says she will be available for next weekend's game against the Eels. A try for prop Ivana Lauitiiti after she swatted away three defenders in her 10-metre run to the line, and a second four-pointer to winger Payton Takimoana did the damage for the Warriors, who avoided a third straight defeat. "We spoke about being prepared to win the game by skill but we'll be ready to win the game by will," coach Ron Griffiths said. "We arrived in Newcastle to torrential rain so we did our captain's run in the rain and then had a swim at Newcastle baths. And the players just said 'Yep, let's get it done'." Eels shift it out to Ginn 🔥 — NRLW (@NRLWomens) August 3, 2025 And Parramatta bounced back from a big loss to the Knights, narrowly beating St George Illawarra 12-10. The Eels were down 6-2 at halftime and had an uphill battle after they lost five-eighth Cassey Tohi-Hiku (ankle) and centre Rory Owen (leg) to reduce their bench to two for the second half. It dropped to one when Kennedy Cherrington (concussion) left in the 59th minute and didn't return, but Fleur Ginn's four-pointer with nine minutes to go lifted Steve Georgallis' side to fifth.

Jezza century on cards after Cats whack Port
Jeremy Cameron has continued his pursuit of a rare century with six goals as Geelong pressed their case for an AFL top-two spot with an 88-point thumping of Port Adelaide. Cameron swelled his season tally to 75 majors as the focal point in the home side's dominant 23.15 (153) to 9.11 (65) victory at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday. It lifted the fourth-placed Cats (14-6) to within one win of top sides Adelaide and Collingwood, and two points shy of Brisbane, with three rounds left in the home-and-away campaign. Tom Stewart was involved in this incident with Ollie Wines. — AFL (@AFL) August 3, 2025 Cameron, who kicked 11 goals against North Melbourne in round 20, had four goals to halftime against Port under close attention from Lachie Jones. The 32-year-old requires another 25 majors in three games plus finals to become the first player since Hawthorn's Lance Franklin in 2008 to kick 100 in a season. Max Holmes (35 disposals, two goals), Bailey Smith (30 touches, eight) and Gryran Miers (30 disposals, one goal) also stood out for Geelong, and substitute Jack Martin kicked four goals in a superb cameo. The only concern for the Cats was Tom Stewart's high contact on Ollie Wines, which will be scrutinised by the AFL match review officer. Stewart jumped off the ground in an attempt to smother a Wines handpass and landed on his Power opponent. But Stewart's act did not appear malicious and he immediately showed concern for Wines, who was able to play out the game. Holmes' running power was on full display from the outset, when he started a play from half-back and ended it by strolling in to kick the opening goal. Scores were level at quarter-time but the Cats grabbed the contest by the throat when they posted 5.6 to 1.0 in the second term, including three majors to Cameron. The Cats MIGHT be looking for Jezza 😅#AFLCatsPower — AFL (@AFL) August 3, 2025 Cats sub Martin replaced ruckman Rhys Stanley in a tactical switch and lit up the third quarter with four goals within a few minutes of entering the fray. It came as Geelong piled on 9.3 to 1.2 in the third quarter against a Power side that managed just six tackles for the term, before hitting cruise control in the last. Wines (32 disposals, eight clearancs) and Travis Boak (24 touches, one goal) fought hard for Port, who lost captain Connor Rozee (illness) as a late withdrawal. Zak Butters was held to just 10 touches and Jase Burgoyne was subbed out in the third quarter with an ankle injury.
