Union Home Minister Amit Shah is all set to sound the poll bugle for the upcoming West Bengal assembly election slated next year in a political huddle at Kolkata's Netaji Indoor Stadium on June 1. Sources say it was Shah who insisted on the meeting to bring clarity to not just the top state leadership but down to the Mandal presidents on what the next few months will be like and what will be their role in the grand scheme of things.
There are almost 1,300 BJP Mandals in West Bengal. While the new Mandal presidents have been invited, the entire district and state leadership has been asked to be present on June 1.
There is a growing sense among a section of the BJP leadership that they have not been able to encash the political Catch-22 situation the ruling Trinamool Congress has been in for the last one year. Be it allegations during Sandeshkhali or the mass protest over a doctor's rape and murder and now an ongoing protest by agitating teachers who have lost their jobs following a recent Supreme Court order—Shah is expected to handhold the state unit towards success.
Ahead of Madhya Pradesh assembly polls, the state BJP was in a similar state of disarray when Shah stepped in to monitor their work daily from Delhi and the rest is history.
'Having listened to him in many such meetings, I expect him to enthuse to leadership. I would not be surprised if Amit-ji raises Murshidabad and Operation Sindoor on June 1. Many would also want to know about the future of Dilip Da (Ghosh) whose recent hobnobbing with Mamata Banerjee hasn't gone down well with any of us and even he (Shah) knows that. So, his speech will put a lot of things into perspective," a Bengal BJP national executive member told News18.
Sources in the know suggest that after the organisation meeting, Shah is set to take part in a 'religious event". News18 has learnt that Shah may pay a visit to the house of Swami Vivekananda, a Bengali icon whose teachings the BJP and its ideological parent Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) often invoke to align with their vision of cultural nationalism and Hindutva.
It is learnt that BJP MP Locket Chatterjee, who is in the race to become the next Bengal BJP chief, is overseeing the event. Many saints are also likely to join in the event.

Quick Read Summary is AI generated, newsroom reviewed. Sharmishta Panoli, a 22-year-old influencer from Kolkata, was granted interim bail after her arrest over a controversial post. A case has also been filed against the complainant, Wajahat Khan Qadri. Kolkata: Sharmishta Panoli, the 22-year-old social media influencer from Kolkata arrested over a communally charged video linked to Operation Sindoor, has been granted interim bail by the Calcutta High Court. Ms Panoli was arrested on May 31, over two weeks after she made the controversial remarks in response to a post questioning India's military action after the Pahalgam attack. The interim bail comes a day after the Kolkata Police filed a first information report (FIR) against Wajahat Khan Qadri, the man whose complaint led to the arrest of Ms Panoli. Mr Qadri faces allegations of hurting religious sentiments. He is on the run, the police said. An Assam Police team has also reached Kolkata with an arrest warrant for Mr Qadri. The Assam Police filed a case against him earlier this week for posting content on social media that contained hate speech and derogatory remarks, which hurt religious sentiments. He was not found at his Kolkata house when the police team went there on Wednesday. Mr Khan also faces many cases in other states. Ms Panoli was arrested from Gurugram last week after her Instagram post drew protests. Her arrest sparked a political row, with the BJP and its allies targeting the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal. She was produced in court and sent to judicial custody for 14 days. Ms Panoli even received support from nearly 7,000 km away. Geert Wilders, a member of the Dutch Parliament and the leader of the right-wing Party for Freedom, has said the influencer's arrest is a "disgrace for freedom of speech" and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure she is freed.

BJP leader calls Congress govt ‘heartless' after Bengaluru stampede: ‘Those who took selfies…'

BJP leader R Ashoka on Thursday took a dig at the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government in the state alleging that those who celebrated by raising the IPL trophy, went to airport and took selfies with the RCB team will not go to homes of those who lost their lives in the stampede. In a post on 'X' the leader of opposition termed the Congress government "heartless" and shared pictures from a felicitation ceremony held by state government in Vidhana Soudha for the RCB team. In one of the pictures, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was seen donning turban on Virat Kohli while in another picture, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar was seen lifting the IPL trophy won by RCB team after a wait of 18 years. "Those who celebrated yesterday by raising the trophy and taking photos will not come to support the families of the innocent people who died. Those who were happy yesterday when they went to the airport and took selfies will not go to the homes of the deceased today and shed tears," he alleged. Ashoka further alleged that those who honoured cricket players yesterday by donning turbans and garlanding them cannot even come to lay soil on the graves of the dead today. "The lives of ordinary people have no value for this heartless @INCKarnataka government," he added. He continued to reiterate his demand seeking resignation of Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar. According to Home Minister, G Parameshwara, 11 people have died and 56 have been injured in the stampede. Among the injured, 46 have gone back home after the treatment, while 10 are at hospital and their condition is not serious according to doctors, he added.

Calcutta High Court grants interim bail to social media influencer Sharmistha Panoli

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday (June 5, 2025) granted interim bail to social media influencer Sharmistha Panoli, who was arrested by Kolkata Police for a social media post on Operation Sindoor. The 22-year-old student was arrested in Gurugram and brought to Kolkata on a transit remand. The High Court, while granting interim bail to Ms. Panoli, said 'at this point there is no need of custodial interrogation'. The Calcutta High Court directed Ms. Panoli to furnish a bail bond of ₹10,000. Earlier, Kolkata Police had defended the arrest of social media influencer and law student, stating that the posts made by her amounted to 'hate speech' and should not be conflated with freedom of expression. Ms. Panoli's arrest sparked political outrage, with the Opposition BJP accusing the Mamata Banerjee-led government of 'State-sponsored repression'. (With inputs from PTI)
