‘Nest of violence': Video shows wild brawl at London Tube station

News.com.au18-07-2025
The terrifying moment a brawl broke out at a busy Tube station in London has been caught on camera, showing a toddler caught up in the chaos.
The fight allegedly broke out between three men at Highbury and Islington Station on Thursday, July 17 at around 5.30pm, The Sun reported.
Video footage, which can be seen below, shows the moment a group of men start violently punching and kicking one another as commuters rush to get out of the way.
Amid the chaos is a young toddler, who appeared to have been abandoned at the bottom of the stairs.
Nearby, a baby in a pram can be seen crying as the fight breaks out on the opposite side of the barrier and the stairwell descends into chaos.
The video starts just after the brawl broke out, with a man on the floor being repeatedly punched by a group of men.
A suited man who ran up the stairs quickly begins stomping on the head of the grey tracksuit-wearing man.
Another commuter coming down the stairs tries to pull him away before another man intervenes, with the pair managing to restrain him from the attack.
The man in the suit then leans over the divider on the stairwell, grabs a backpack and launches it backwards.
Once he is released by his detainees, he then immediately rejoins the fight.
Several men lift the man in the tracksuit into the air as he thrashes wildly, kicking at the others.
The suited man then continues to kick him repeatedly before the man being attacked is dropped onto his back on the stairs.
He can then be seen trying to crawl up the stairs while at least three men continue to punch him.
Meanwhile, commuters can be seen waiting at the top of the stairs as they watch the fight, or trying to dash quickly past.
A woman who had been holding the pram can be heard screaming throughout the video as she earlier rushed towards the toddler.
The man who had earlier detained the alleged attacker eventually gives up, backing away from the ongoing altercation.
Another woman also tries to resolve the situation but backs away when she nearly gets caught by a punch.
She discourages a woman in a yellow dress from getting involved in the situation as she can be seen holding the arm of one of the reported attackers.
The woman then grabs one of the other men as the video cuts out.
British Transport Police hasn't yet released details of the incident, however, eyewitnesses claim one man punched the other while he was holding the baby, causing the toddler to fall to the ground.
'Officers received a report of a fight at Highbury and Islington Underground station at around 5.30pm yesterday,' the force said in a statement.
'Officers are aware of footage circulating on social media, and the incident is currently being investigated.'
Comments on the video expressed concern for the toddler who had been left sitting on the floor throughout the ordeal.
'Crazy, that poor kid could have been trampled,' one wrote.
'Odd that no one is picking up that baby and he is at risk of that whole nest of violence falling down upon him, and they'd most probably carry on brawling on top of him,' another said.
A third comment read: 'This is just awful. That poor little boy on the floor. I do hope he's ok.'
Metropolitan Police said that the incident was being handled by British Transport Police as the incident took place inside the station.

British mother sexually ‘violated' by parasailing operator while mid-air in Tunisia

A British mother of three was sexually assaulted mid-air while parasailing in Africa, according to a report. Michelle Wilson, 52, said she was strapped into a harness with a parasail operator when he pressed himself against her and groped her while they soared through the sky off the beach in Sousse, Tunisia. 'I could feel the back of my bikini bottoms being pulled, and he was pulling the strap,' she told The Sun. 'He must have been tightening the harness to get me closer. 'His legs straddled around me, he had one hand up on the parachute, the other wasn't. Then I felt him touch my leg.' 'He was groping me and moving back and forth into me and talking to me in Arabic,' Wilson said. 'I felt him pressing against me. I kept arching my back. I felt violated and dirty and was scared. He was only a young lad, maybe around 20.' She originally planned to take the ride with a friend but was told it was too windy and that she and her pal would have to go separately accompanied by an operator. The friend 'had a great time with no problems,' Wilson said. Wilson said that as soon as she was back on the ground, she burst into tears and reported the incident to local police. She said the incident ruined her vacation. 'As women you expect a bit of banter from men in these countries, but this wasn't banter, it was a sexual assault,' she said. Wilson spent $8,000 for the trip to Tunisia wither her 17-year-old daughter, her friend and her 16-year-old twin sons. She believes the man has since been arrested. British authorities and Wilson's insurance company are assisting in the case, she said. EasyJet, with whom Wilson booked the trip, are looking into the assault as well. British and Irish Lions hooker Dan Sheehan cited for hit on Tom Lynagh

British and Irish Lions hooker Dan Sheehan has been cited for foul play over an incident in Saturday's third Test against Australia that left Wallabies' flyhalf Tom Lynagh knocked out. The incident was briefly looked at by the match officials just before halftime but Sheehan initially escaped punishment even though replays showed he entered a ruck at speed and appeared to make dangerous contact with Lynagh's head. The Australian playmaker was taken from the field to undergo a head injury assessment, which he failed, preventing him from rejoining the match, which the Wallabies won 22-12. Sheehan's actions at the ruck were hotly debated on social media, with many incredulous that he was let off as Australian supporters argued he should have been given an instant red card. 'British & Irish Lions player Dan Sheehan will have a citing complaint reviewed by an independent Foul Play Review Committee (FPRC) after being cited by the independent citing commissioner Adrien Menez for an act of foul play contrary to Law 9.20 (a) (a player must not charge into a ruck or maul …) in the Australia v British & Irish Lions third test in Sydney on Saturday, 2 August,' World Rugby said in the statement. Asked about the incident after the match, Lions coach Andy Farrell said he couldn't comment because he hadn't looked at it yet. 'There are all sorts of rugby incidents that we can pull apart. I've seen quite a few more incidents as well,' he said. 'We'll always go through the right channels when that's concerned.' Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt was also tight-lipped after launching a blistering attack on the way officials deal with head knocks from collisions at rucks after the Television Match Official failed to penalise the Lions over another contentious clean-out that would have ruled out their series-winning try in the second Test in Melbourne. But Schmidt was biting his tongue this time when asked about the hit on Lynagh, the talented young son of Wallabies great Michael Lynagh. 'In live, we didn't see Tom's incident, and it was probably a little bit later that we got a glimpse of it, and that's all I've seen so far,' Schmidt said. Dan Sheehan has been cited for foul play. Picture: Getty Images 'So I'd rather not comment on it until I've seen it. But … You know, there's always a difficulty for a TMO, I guess. He's watching the main TV broadcast, and then if he doesn't pick it up there, then he doesn't' access the other angles because everything's happening so quickly.' Schmidt did say that he didn't think there was any malice from the Irish hooker and also that he had checked in on Lynagh's health to ensure he was OK 'I've got massive respect for Dan,' Schmidt said. 'There's a few things like that that will happen in a really physical contest. 'For us with Tom, he is still a young kid and we'll try to look after him and make sure that he's fully fit on the back of getting that knock. But I had a good chat to him after the game and he's pretty resilient.'

And now to the leafy north shore of Sydney where a wild soiree took a turn for the worse: EMILY FRANCIS: A night of partying ending in violence. A schoolboy stabbed with a kitchen knife inside this Mosman home. - Seven News 6pm (Sydney), 19 July 2025 A house party descending into a brawl that landed a teenager in hospital and stunned the neighbourhood: TEENAGER 1: Yeah, it was a bit of shock. TEENAGER 2: They go to another school and I think they're in the same year as me… WOMAN: It's very unfortunate and I hope that boy is okay. - Seven News 6pm (Sydney), 19 July 2025 After charges were laid against two suspects aged 18 and 20 years old, Sydney's trusty crime almanac The Daily Telegraph blew the lid off the story: Two self-appointed bouncers at a teenager's Mosman house party allegedly stomped on one guest and stabbed another in the thigh with a kitchen knife in front of horrified revellers. - The Daily Telegraph, 21 July 2025 Lavishing every brutal detail: Police allege a 16-year-old boy feared he was going to die as a knife was held to his throat … - The Daily Telegraph, 21 July 2025 The 'exclusive' yarn also ran online via the Tele's homepage and its social media and in The Mosman Daily, another News Corp publication. And front and centre of all the stories was another get—a photograph of one of the young men charged with the stabbing, 20-year-old Hugo Phipson. Just a small problem however, the person in that photo isn't Hugo Phipson at all. In fact, his name is Angus Bendall. Phipson, as it turns out, is the blurred figure on the left. Many in the neighbourhood immediately recognised Angus from the picture, which he has granted us permission to reuse, in part because Angus Bendall is the son of Roy Bendall, once deputy mayor of Mosman, whose former constituents upon reading the news vented their displeasure. Just heard about your son stabbing someone that's disgusting i supported you handing out flyers to help you get elected for representing the community dont count on my support again get your shit sorted. - Text to Roy Bendall, 25 July 2025 In fact, poor old Angus had spent the night in question innocently watching a flick with his girlfriend and had woken the following Monday to find his face splashed across the tabloid: My first reaction was I was like, 100% sure that it was some joke … … and then a fear and anxiety. What's going to happen from this? Who's going to see this? - Angus Bendall, 31 July 2025 So how did The Daily Telegraph get it so wrong? It declined to say. But after Roy Bendall engaged lawyers, the image began to disappear from the paper's website and social media channels. A few days later, no doubt after the exchange of legal letters, a mea culpa materialised in News Corp's online mastheads nationwide. And in the local papers: Mr Bendall has no association whatsoever with the allegations described in the article and was not present at the party. - The Daily Telegraph, 25 July 2025 Mr Bendall has no association whatsoever with the allegations described in the article and was not present at the party. - The Mosman Daily, 31 July 2025 It is not the first time a news organisation, in its rush to be first, has scraped the internet for a photo and misidentified someone accused of a crime, and to err is human, of course. But in the modern era where every word and photograph ever published seems to reside in everyone's pocket, the damage is lasting: Even now I'm still saying to people that it's not true … what hurt the most, what did the most damage, was [The Daily Telegraph] sharing it on social media … it just had his photo and the headline. - Roy Bendall, 29 July 2025 The Telegraph, like every publisher who does so, should be acknowledged for correcting its error and issuing an apology, which will inevitably cost it some pretty coin. But a better lust for accuracy than speed would provide its readers whose photographs also lie scattered about the internet with surely the higher service.
