Karnataka's Shakti Scheme sets world record with over 500 crore women bus journeys
The award recognizes over 5,049,476,416 women passenger journeys, equivalent to over 500 crore ticketed rides, recorded between June 11, 2023, and July 20 this year.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, also the KPCC president, hailed the recognition as a milestone in women's empowerment, socially, educationally, economically, and industrially, under the scheme.

State officials attributed the scheme's success to the collective efforts of the management boards of KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC, and KKRTC, along with the secretariat, managing directors, and staff.
'The tireless efforts, dedication, and sincere service of all employees are unparalleled and praiseworthy. The cooperation of labour union leaders too deserves heartfelt thanks,' said a statement from the transport department.
Launched soon after the current government took office, the Shakti Scheme became the first of Karnataka's five guarantee programs. It faced initial hurdles: the transport corporations were burdened with debt, lacked fresh buses, and had no recent recruitment activity.
Now, in just two years, the government has added 5,800 new buses, conducted 10,000 recruitments, and cleared debts using ₹2,000 crore in assistance, efforts officials say have significantly boosted ridership and operational efficiency.
These interventions align with findings from the "Beyond Free Rides" study by the Sustainable Mobility Network, which shows significant socio-economic returns: women's employment rose by 23% in Bengaluru and 21% in Hubballi-Dharwad following the launch of the free bus travel scheme.
The scheme's influence stretches beyond state borders. Several other Indian states are now piloting similar women-centric bus travel programs, a testament to Shakti's success and replicability. Officials called the world record recognition a moment of "pride and honour", underlining the long-term transformational impact of the program.

The timing is particularly interesting. Within hours of the call, external affairs minister S Jaishankar met with Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi, who is on his first visit to India in three years. Both sides stressed a willingness to move beyond recent tensions. 'Having seen a difficult period in our relationship, now seek to move ahead. Differences must not become disputes, nor competition conflict,' S Jaishankar said as he interacted with his Chinese counterpart. Wang was equally forward-looking. China has privately assured India of fertilizer, rare earth and infrastructure equipment supplies, according to Indian officials. The Trump administration has slapped a 50 per cent tariff on Indian exports over its purchases of Russian oil, a move that could cripple sectors dependent on overseas markets, Bloomberg reported. India's strong ties with Russia India's refusal to stop buying oil from Russia reflects decades of partnership, from Cold War defence deals to today's trade. India is an essential part of the solution for the world's main challenges – be it the issues stemming from disparity between the global north and south, dangers of cross-border terrorism or the implications of climate change, President Droupadi Murmu said on Tuesday (August 19, 2025). Addressing a group of officer trainees of the Indian Foreign Service (2024 batch), who had called on her at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, the President asked them to bear in mind "Rashtrahit Sarvopari" (nation first) while embracing the spirit of "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" (world is a family). Ms. Murmu said the world around them is seeing rapid changes in terms of geopolitical shifts, digital revolution, climate change and contested multilateralism. She said the officer trainees have joined the Indian Foreign Service at the 'Amrit Kaal' - a time when India is playing its role as a leading power and effective player on the global stage. "Today, India is an essential part of the solution for the world's main challenges – be it the issues stemming from disparity between the global north and south, dangers of cross-border terrorism or the implications of climate change," the President said. Ms. Murmu said that India is not only the world's largest democracy, but also a steadily rising economic power. "Our voice carries weight. As our diplomats, you will be the first face of India that the world sees – in your words, in your actions, and in your values," she said. Spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam Even as "we embrace the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, please do bear in mind – Rashtrahit Sarvopari – that our actions are ultimately based on enlightened national interest", the President said. Ms. Murmu said the country's diplomatic efforts should be closely aligned with "our domestic needs, and with our objective of becoming Viksit Bharat by 2047". She urged them to carry with them the values of "our civilisational wisdom — peace, pluralism, non-violence, and dialogue". "At the same time, remain open to ideas, people, and perspectives from every culture you encounter," the President added. Ms. Murmu asked them to remember their responsibility to the country's 33-million-strong diaspora, which plays a key role in India's development story. "In my interactions with the Indian communities during my travels abroad, I have been very impressed by their energy and commitment, both to their country of residence and to their motherland. As the world goes through upheavals, it is crucial that you meet the needs of our nationals abroad, especially in times of distress," she said. From Operation Raahat in 2015 to Operation Sindhu in 2025, India's diplomats have demonstrated the unwavering commitment of the government of India to the safety of our nationals, wherever they are, Ms. Murmu said, and urged them to "keep up this proud tradition with sensitivity and a humane touch". Operation Raahat was India's major evacuation mission to rescue Indian citizens and foreign nationals from war-torn Yemen. Operation Sindhu was launched by India on 18 June to evacuate its nationals from conflict zones in Iran and Israel. Ms. Murmu also mentioned the increasing importance of cultural diplomacy in today's times. "Connections formed through the heart and soul are always stronger. Be it Yoga, Ayurveda and millets, or the musical, artistic, linguistic and spiritual traditions of Bharat - I would like you to be more creative and ambitious in your efforts to project and promote this vast heritage abroad," the President said. Ms. Murmu told them to uphold the principles of integrity, probity and conscientiousness in all matters as they soon proceed for their first posting in Indian Missions abroad. "Think of yourself not only as custodians of India's interest, but as ambassadors of its soul," she added.

Easing worries over additional tariffs by the US also boosted market sentiments," said Anuj Chaudhary, Research Analyst, Commodities and Currencies, Mirae Asset present GST tax rates of nil/zero on essential food items, 5 per cent on daily use products, 12 per cent on standard goods, 18 per cent on electronics and services and 28 per cent on luxury and sin goods will be replaced by two tax slabs of 5 per cent and 18 per cent, plus a special 40 per cent top bracket for 5-7 demerit proposed two-slab regime, if approved by the GST Council, will replace the current four slabs in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, doing away with the 12 per cent and 28 per cent slabs."We expect the rupee to trade with a positive bias on upbeat domestic market sentiments due to GST rationalisation and fading trade tariff concerns. Falling crude oil prices and overall weakness in the greenback may also support the rupee," Chaudhary increased demand of dollar by importers may cap sharp gains. Traders may take cues from building permits and housing starts data from the US. USD-INR spot price is expected to trade in a range of 86.70 to 87.40, Chaudhary Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, was trading lower by 1.04 per cent at USD 65.91 per barrel in futures trade, amid cautious optimism around the Ukraine-Russia dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was lower by 0.13 per cent at the domestic equity market front, Sensex climbed 370.64 points to settle at 81,644.39, while Nifty rallied 103.70 points to 24, Institutional Investors bought equities worth Rs 550.85 crore on Monday, according to exchange data.
