India to restart tourist visas for Chinese citizens

Russia Today23-07-2025
In a sign of warming ties between New Delhi and Beijing, India has said it will restart issuing tourist visas to Chinese citizens after a five-year pause.
The restrictions were imposed during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic, and continued after relations between the countries became strained due to a deadly border clash in the Himalayas in 2020.
'From July 24, 2025, Chinese citizens can apply for a tourist visa to visit India,' the Indian Embassy said in a post on Chinese social media platform Weibo.
Beijing has long requested the reissuing of visas to its citizens, in addition to restarting direct flights between India and mainland China, which were also suspended in 2020.

'Easing cross-border travel is widely beneficial,' the Chinese Foreign Ministry said. 'China will maintain communication and consultation with India to further facilitate travel between the two countries.'
Efforts to normalize ties between the two countries began in October last year, after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks on the sidelines of the 2024 BRICS summit in Kazan. Both leaders gave their nod to follow an agreement to disengage from areas of tension and a commitment to work towards restoring relations.
Following multiple rounds of military and diplomatic talks, certain proposals to ease trade and investment restrictions between India and China have gained momentum, driven by industry demands.
Earlier this month, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, at a meeting in Beijing with his Indian counterpart, S. Jaishankar, said, 'Since our leaders' meeting in October 2024, the relationship has been gradually moving in a positive direction.'
In June, a group of Indians crossed over into Tibet for the Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra, one of the holiest pilgrimages in Hinduism. The pilgrimage, which traverses two sacred sites, was also resumed after a five-year hiatus.
Last week, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said Beijing is ready to enhance trilateral cooperation with New Delhi and Moscow.

Trump to ‘substantially' raise tariffs on India ‘over the next 24 hours'

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he will 'substantially' raise tariffs on imports from India over the next 24 hours because of the South Asian's continued purchases of Russian crude. The latest threat comes a day after India rejected US and EU criticism over its oil trade with Russia saying it would take measures to 'safeguard its national interests and economic security,' while adding that the targeting of the South Asian nation was unreasonable. Calling India the 'highest tariff nation,' the US President told CNBC Squawk Box in a phone interview that India has not been a good trading partner. 'They do a lot of business with us but we don't do with them. So, we settled on 25% but am going to raise them substantially in the next 24 hours because they're buying Russian oil and they're fueling the war machine,' Trump said in the interview. ❗️Trump Will 'Substantially Raise' India's 25% Tariff Rate 'Over the Next 24 Hours' The US president cited India's Russian oil purchases as the reason during a phone interview with CNBC. In the 2024-25 fiscal year, bilateral trade between India and the US reached $131.8 billion, with a trade surplus of $41.18 billion for New Delhi, according to the Indian government. Trump also claimed in his Tuesday interview that New Delhi has offered to entirely waive tariffs on US imports. 'Now I will say this, India went from the highest tariffs ever, they will give us zero tariffs. But that's not good enough, because of what they're doing with oil,' he said. Although the US President maintains that India is a friend, he has recently made a string of statements that are critical of New Delhi. On Monday, he said India was making 'big profits' by selling Russian oil in the open market. 'They don't care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian war machine,' he said in a Truth Social Post on Monday.

India and Philippines announced the establishment of a strategic partnership, following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr, on Tuesday. The countries, which are marking the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, have decided to expand economic as well as defense ties. 'We have decided to take our relations to the level of strategic partnership,' Modi said at a joint press briefing with Marcos in New Delhi on Tuesday. 'Our bilateral trade is rising constantly, and it has crossed $3 billion. To further strengthen it, our priority is to complete an India-Asean Free Trade Review as soon as possible.' The Philippine President said his visit to India this week is a reaffirmation of the bilateral partnership that the countries 'are strengthening,' and highlighted the island nation's acquisition of BrahMos cruise missiles. 'We express satisfaction with the rapid pace of the Philippines' ongoing defense modernization and the expanding capabilities and footprint of India's indigenous defense industry as a partner in this undertaking, as exemplified by our BrahMos project,' Marcos said. Russian region declares itself ‘carbon neutral'

The Russian Far East's Sakhalin Region has achieved carbon neutrality, reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions, Governor Valery Limarenko has announced. He made the statement on Saturday at the 'Islands of Growth' international climate forum in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. The event took place last week and brought together leading experts in the field, as well as officials from BRICS nations and the Asia-Pacific region. 'Sakhalin Region became the first region in Russia where the removal of greenhouse gases exceeded their emissions according to the official regional inventory,' Limarenko said. 'We fulfilled the president's order and proved that the transition to a low-carbon economy is possible without compromising growth and with industrial development,' he wrote on Telegram after the event. The goal was reached 'a year ahead of schedule,' he added. In 2022, Moscow launched an experiment aimed at achieving carbon neutrality in Sakhalin Region by the end of this year. Dozens of companies took part, forming a system of reporting greenhouse gas production, and for working with a carbon market of government quotas for CO2 emissions. The climate agenda affects the 'competitiveness of Russian products abroad,' Russian Economic Development Minister Maksim Reshetnikov said at the forum last week. Moscow could take 'leading positions' in low-carbon-footprint industries such as aluminum, lithium, and fertilizer production, as well as nuclear and hydroelectric power, he said. The success of the Sakhalin experiment means it could be repeated in other regions of the country if they show interest, Reshetnikov added. The Yakutia Republic, also in the Russian Far East, is considering becoming the next region to pursue carbon neutrality. The regional government has tasked several research centers with calculating the region's carbon balance in preparation, according to the first deputy chairman of the republic, Dzhulustan Borisov.
