Memphis Grizzlies make a sneaky trade on Sunday that could change their defensive outlook

The Memphis Grizzlies made a move so quiet, most fans missed it completely. But make no mistake, this trade could matter. While Golden State chased offense, Memphis locked in on Jahmai Mashack, a Tennessee standout with elite defensive numbers.
In a league chasing flash, the Grizzlies doubled down on grit and Mashack might be the next piece in their hard-nosed puzzle.
Golden State Warriors
moved up in the draft but might've overlooked what they gave away
The deal started when Tennessee standout Jahmai Mashack was chosen at No. 59 by the Houston Rockets on June 26. His rights were quickly passed through the Warriors before they ended up in Memphis — the Warriors moved up to No. 56 to draft Will Richard, trading away Mashack's rights and a future pick.
By Sunday evening, the Grizzlies confirmed the trade, emphasizing their focus on a defensive-first strategy.
This deal was anything but ordinary—it took place following the NBA's inaugural seven-team trade, which saw Kevin Durant heading to Houston. While the spotlight was on the stars and significant picks, Memphis quietly acquired Jahmai Mashack after Golden State sent his rights their way. The entire shuffle involved players, draft selections, and picks extending to 2032—but Memphis remained focused and determined.
Standing at 6'4" and weighing 202 lbs, Mashack was recognized with SEC All-Defensive honors in 2025, averaging 6.0 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 1.5 APG, and 1.7 SPG across 38 games. His last season helped Tennessee make it to the Elite Eight, and he placed fourth among all Division I guards in defensive box plus/minus. With a reputation for his lockdown defense similar to Tony Allen, he fits perfectly with Memphis' tough-minded roster.
Mashack hasn't made it to the Summer League court yet; his introductory practice was postponed because of some paperwork regarding draft rights exchanges. But now that the trade is finalized, he's anticipated to debut in the Summer League this week. As the final pick and a defensive specialist, he might not fill the stat sheet—but his energy, hustle, and perimeter defense are exactly what Memphis needs.

In a league where flashy trades get all the attention, Memphis' Sunday deal for Jahmai Mashack is notable for its subtle strategic importance. While the Kevin Durant blockbuster took center stage, the Grizzlies focused on enhancing their defense — bringing in a high-energy, tough-minded guard perfectly suited for their style.

A $229 million deal would be one of the biggest in the NBA . Meanwhile, Trae Young is a somewhat divisive player, and over the years, trade rumours have been made about him. He has an incredible career average of 25 points and 10 assists per game. The 2022 All-NBA third-team selection and four-time All-Star has been the team's ambassador since 2018. Trae Young is an amazing player (Image via Getty Images) Despite his efforts and consistency, the team's poor record hurts his chances of making the All-NBA team. However, he doesn't seem to have a big impact on winning all the time. He should still have some of his best years ahead of him as he turns 27 in September. Nevertheless, it's unclear how he would age in a career where he is being pushed around by larger players because he is also listed as 6-foot-1 and 164 pounds. Trae Young is developing into a perimeter playmaker in the NBA. He will have more opportunities if he signs with the team. IND vs ENG: 'Even if India lose the series ...' - Yograj Singh after India beat England at Edgbaston

India captain Shubman Gill and coach Gautam Gambhir (Image by) Former India cricketer Yograj Singh has come out in support of national team head coach Gautam Gambhir , urging critics to back the 43-year-old following India's historic win at Edgbaston. Under Gambhir's guidance, the Shubman Gill-led side secured their first-ever Test victory at the venue, defeating England by 336 runs to level the five-match series 1-1. Prior to the triumph in Birmingham, Gambhir faced scrutiny for India's form in the longest format, particularly after the team's five-wicket loss to England in the series opener at Leeds. However, Yograj stressed that Gambhir should not be criticised, as he continues to contribute positively to Indian cricket . 'Indian players are consistently growing and improving their game. We will support them always. We should not speak about Gautam Gambhir because he is doing well. Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, and Rahul Dravid are giving back to cricket because they have received so much,' Yograj told ANI. Shubman Gill, Gautam Gambhir shut critics with thumping win over England India's recent Test form had been underwhelming, with losses piling up since the start of their home series against New Zealand last year. The side had suffered seven defeats in nine matches, including a whitewash by the Kiwis, a 3-1 loss in Australia, and the opening Test against England. Despite the inconsistent run, Yograj urged for continued support for the team. 'Even if our team loses the series, we should not demoralise them. If you lose, you will not be there to explain; if you win, you don't have to explain. We hope that we win the series under the captaincy of Shubman Gill ,' he said. Poll Do you think Gautam Gambhir deserves support after India's victory at Edgbaston? Yes, he has proven himself. No, he needs to prove himself more India now head to Lord's for the third Test, looking to take the lead in the series. Game On Season 1 continues with Mirabai Chanu's inspiring story.
