Saad Kassis-Mohamed's SKM Capital announces intention to revive Caterham F1 team for 2027 entry

The 2026 Formula 1 season will see the grid swell up to eleven teams for the first time in ten years, with the inclusion of General Motors-backed Cadillac F1 team.
A twelfth entrant also could be a possibility after Kuwaiti investor Saad Kassis-Mohamed announced his intention to revive the dormant Caterham F1 team as SKM Racing, subject to approval from the FIA and rights holder Liberty Media.
SKM Capital, of which Kassis-Mohamed is the board director, aims to secure an entry ahead of the 2027 season. The team will function out of a technical base in Silverstone and will have a race operations unit in Munich.
'F1 now operates with clearer financial guardrails and stable technical frameworks, making the category investable. We like the intersection of elite engineering, a global platform, and predictable cost governance,' Kassis-Mohamed told Sportstar.
Caterham was part of the F1 grid for three seasons (2012-2014), during which it failed to score a single point. An eleventh-place finish for Vitaly Petrov in the 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix was the team's best result.
After entering administration in October 2014, the team returned for a final race in Abu Dhabi that year, managing to raise enough money via crowdfunding. With the administrators failing to find a new investor, the team folded at the end of the year, with its remaining assets auctioned off in March 2015.
'Caterham has strong recall and no current grid presence. A brand licence shortens the marketing ramp without reviving the defunct corporate entity or its liabilities,' the Kuwaiti entrepreneur said, outlining the reason for not marketing the team as a new entry.
The road to FIA approval is still quite far, with the FIA yet to announce the reopening of its Expressions of Interest process since its previous notification in early 2023.
Cadillac's confirmed F1 entry was also far from smooth. Michael Andretti's initial attempts to form an eleventh team were met with reluctance from Liberty Media. It was only after the onboarding of an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) in the form of General Motors that the team was welcomed to the grid.
Despite the perceived importance of OEM support, Kassis-Mohamed said the team will apply as a customer team, hoping to strike a deal with the existing 2026 power unit suppliers.
'We respect the thresholds set by FIA/ F1. Our plan involves two options: a change of control transaction in an existing entrant or applying in the next FIA process as a compact, well-funded customer team with long-term PU supply,' he said.
Despite the short turnaround time, Kassis-Mohamed is confident of setting up the infrastructure and leadership group before 2025 comes to a close, ahead of focusing on chassis systems and race operations the following year. The timeline and decision-making, however, will be contingent on regulatory and commercial approvals.

US Envoy says Israel's turn to 'comply' as Lebanon moves to disarm Hezbollah

U.S. Envoy Tom Barrack on Monday (August 18, 2025) called on Israel to honour commitments under a ceasefire that ended its war with Hezbollah, after the Lebanese government launched a process to disarm the militant group. Under the November truce, which ended more than a year of hostilities including two months of all-out war between Israel and Hezbollah, the Iran-backed group was to withdraw its fighters from near the Israeli border and weapons were to come under the control of the Lebanese state. Israel was to withdraw its troops from the country but has kept them at five border points it deems strategic and has continued to strike Lebanon, threatening to do so until Hezbollah has been disarmed. "There's always a step-by-step approach but I think the Lebanese government has done their part. They've taken the first step. Now what we need is Israel to comply," Barrack said following a meeting in Beirut with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. "We're all moving in the right direction," he said after meeting parliament speaker Nabih Berri. Berri, a Hezbollah ally, said Israel's commitment to the ceasefire and its troop withdrawal was "the gateway to stability in Lebanon", a statement said. 'Progress' Asked by reporters whether he expected to see Israel fully withdraw from Lebanese territory and stop its violations, Barrack said that "that's exactly the next step" needed. "We need participation on the part of Israel, and we need an economic plan for prosperity, restoration and renovation," the US diplomat added, with Lebanon weighed down by an economic crisis. Barrack said Washington was "in the process of now discussing with Israel what their position is", adding that "in the next few weeks you're going to see progress on all sides." "It means a better life for the people... and at least the beginning of a roadway to a different kind of dialogue" in the region, he said. The visit comes after Lebanon's cabinet tasked the army with developing a plan to disarm Hezbollah by year end -- an unprecedented step since civil war factions gave up their weapons decades ago. The cabinet has also tackled a US proposal that includes a timetable for Hezbollah's disarmament, with Washington pressing Lebanon to take action. The cabinet endorsed the introduction of the US text, which lists 11 objectives including to "ensure the sustainability" of the ceasefire, and to phase out "the armed presence of all non-state actors, including Hezbollah" across all Lebanese territory. It also provides for demarcating Lebanon's land borders with Israel and neighbouring Syria, and a process involving the international community to support reconstruction. 'Lebanese process' Aoun told Barrack that what was needed was for "other parties to adhere to the contents" of the joint declaration, "more support for the Lebanese army", and expedited steps towards reconstruction, the presidency said. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said Washington needed to "fulfil its responsibility in pressuring Israel halt hostilities", withdraw troops and release Lebanese prisoners it holds. Hezbollah, the only faction that kept its weapons after Lebanon's 1975-1990 civil war, emerged badly weakened from last year's war with Israel. On Friday, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem vowed to fight plans to disarm, saying that "the resistance will not surrender its weapons while... occupation persists". On Sunday, Aoun told the Saudi-owned Al Arabiya channel authorities would do "everything possible... to spare Lebanon any internal or external shock". If Lebanon rejected the US plan, "then Israel will intensify its attacks, Lebanon will be economically isolated, and none of us will be able to respond to the aggression", he said. Barrack on Monday stressed that "dealing with Hezbollah, as we've always said, is a Lebanese process".

WhatsApp calling gets major update; call scheduling, reactions now available

WhatsApp has introduced new features allowing users to schedule group calls and invite them to join in advance, the company said in a blog post. The move is aimed at making the platform more interactive and planned, catering to both personal and professional use, protected by end-to-end encryption. How does it work? Press the + button in your Calls tab Click on the Schedule call option Invite people or groups you want to schedule the call with Attendees will receive a reminder notification before the call begins Additionally, users can manage all the upcoming calls in the same tab alongside a list of attendees and call links. The individual who generates the call link will also receive notifications when someone joins. Personalisation weighs in In addition to scheduling calls, users can also react in multiple ways to express themselves on group calls, such as the 'raise hand' option. The development comes after the Meta-backed messaging platform unveiled 'Message Summaries' in late June, integrating MetaAI capabilities to generate private summaries for chats so that users get an idea of what is happening before reading the details in the unread messages. As per the report by AFP, the Mark Zuckerberg-owned company is also planning to roll out three new monetisation features exclusively within its Updates tab, i.e., paid channel subscriptions, promoted channels in its Discovery directory, and ads within Status. Lewis Hamilton Tipped To Write 'Amazing Comeback Story' After Ferrari Struggles In 2025

Lewis Hamilton's dream of an eighth Formula 1 title with Ferrari is spinning off track. His comments at the Hungarian Grand Prix in early August sparked concern among fans of Hamilton and Ferrari as the seven-time champion called himself 'absolutely useless', suggested Ferrari should consider replacing him, and hinted at deeper issues. 'There's a lot going on in the background that is not great,' Hamilton said. Having a four-week break before next week's Dutch Grand Prix offers a much-needed reset, argues Michael E. Sawyer, author of a biography of Hamilton, 'Sir Lewis," published this year. 'I think he's venting, I think he's down. I think the summer break couldn't have come at a better time for him," Sawyer told The Associated Press. 'It gives him a chance to reflect and think through exactly what the approach is going to be.' Hamilton certainly seems to be getting away from it all. He posted pictures on social media last week in the countryside with his beloved bulldog Roscoe and the caption 'DND' — seemingly short for 'do not disturb'. Ferrari has said it still has faith in Hamilton, though F1's former boss Bernie Ecclestone has urged him to call time on his record-breaking career. Hamilton 'would be cheating himself if he goes on,' Ecclestone told the Daily Mail newspaper this month. So how might Hamilton find his way back to the front of the F1 field? All too often, he's been off the pace in qualifying on Saturday and down the grid, meaning his typically better race pace is wasted on working his way through the midfield. 'Every time, every time,' was Hamilton's groan of frustration when he qualified 12th for the Hungarian Grand Prix. Teammate Charles Leclerc was on pole. Qualifying is the area where the break might help Hamilton most, argues Sawyer. He has competitive pace — as he showed while carving through the field on a wet track in Belgium last month — but hasn't brought it on Saturdays. Hamilton's move to Ferrari was never all about 2025. The team made clear that signing Hamilton was a long-term project despite his age — he turned 40 in January — and backed him when he said he needed time to adapt to a different car. When he hasn't been venting about his results on track, Hamilton has emphasized his role in creating Ferrari's car for 2026, when new F1 regulations will shake up the running order. Making Hamilton a core part of the 2026 car's design philosophy means 'there's reason for him to be really optimistic about the possibilities because there's going to be so much shifting around on the grid,' Sawyer said. 'There's going to be opportunity for someone as savvy and experienced as him to take advantage of that.' The worst-case scenario for Ferrari would likely be an unexpected Hamilton retirement, denting the brand's image and leaving the team without a high-level driver to partner Leclerc next season. Of its two reserve drivers, Zhou Guanyu has a career-best race finish of eighth at Sauber and Antonio Giovinazzi's last F1 race was in 2021. Ferrari could also call on Oliver Bearman, the Haas rookie. Still, if Ferrari's big bet pays off, Hamilton has the potential to redefine what F1 success means once again. He turns 41 in January and will be racing for an eighth world title to break a tie with Michael Schumacher and stand alone in the record books. Hamilton could become the oldest race winner since 1994 and oldest champion since 1966. Sawyer believes it would best all of his other titles. 'I don't think there's any doubt about that," said Sawyer. 'I think it would be the greatest of them all. The comeback story would be amazing.'T
