Banish stubborn sun cream stains with two 'simple' items from your cupboard

Daily Mirror7 days ago
Cleaning expert Lynsey Crombie, also known as the Queen of Clean, has shared her top tips for removing sun cream stains from clothes - including using two items you already have at home
Sun cream, also known as sunscreen, is a must-have during the summer months when we're soaking up more rays than usual. It's a saviour for your skin, warding off cancer and premature ageing, but it's not so kind to your clothes, often leaving behind unsightly stains.
The culprit behind these pesky marks is usually the chemical absorbers found in many sun cream formulas. These can leave white garments with an unwelcome yellow or orange tinge, particularly when mixed with sweat.
Standard washing machine cycles might not do the trick, but fear not, there's a nifty solution.
Lynsey Crombie, the Queen of Clean who rose to fame on Channel 4's Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners in 2013, regularly shares her top cleaning tips with over 382k Instagram fans. She even graced ITV's This Morning recently, dishing out advice on tackling those "stubborn" sun cream stains.
It turns out this is Lynsey's "most asked question" when the weather warms up, a query she faces nearly every day. Fortunately, she's got a straightforward fix that utilises a couple of household staples you're likely to have lying around.
The cleaning guru revealed that because the stain is caused by grease, you need a "degreaser" to "soak it up". One of the "easiest things to do", which can even tackle stains that have set into the fabric, is to use bicarbonate of soda and washing up liquid.
Lynsey showed how she would "sprinkle the bicarb on" the affected area, which should be slightly dampened with water first. Then she added some washing up liquid, which she described as a "degreaser".
She then took a small toothbrush to gently scrub it in, before leaving it to soak for a few hours. After that, the stain should "come off".
Alternatively, white vinegar can be used, which is often considered a miracle product in many savvy cleaners' arsenals. It's versatile, useful for everything from shining kitchen windows to swiftly removing toilet limescale.
Simply "really liberally spray it" on the stain before popping it in the washing machine.
Lynsey also mentioned a "really unusual method" involving tea tree oil. "It's actually a natural degreaser," she said.
She suggested diluting it with water and applying it directly to the stain, claiming it should "combat it". According to the clever cleaner, this technique can be effective on various greasy stains, including those from body moisturiser.
In the comment section, people began sharing their own tips. "Lemon juice and sun works for me," said one person.
Another chimed in: "Haven't tried yet but I was given the advice yesterday to hang it on the washing line on a sunny day and the yellowness will disappear!".

Billi Mucklow shows ex Andy Carroll what he's missing as she poses in a pink Hunza G bikini during Spanish getaway

showed ex Andy Carroll what he's missing as she shared a sultry bikini snap on Instagram on Thursday. The former TOWIE star, 37, flaunted her jaw-dropping figure in a pink Hunza G bikini, which retails for £185, during her Majorca getaway. Posing up a storm by the crystal-clear sea, Billi further accessorised her beachy look with a pair of retro gold-framed shades, a pearl layered necklace, and a green Van Cleef bracelet. Flaunting her tanned and toned figure, Billi captioned the post: 'Sun, Sea & Sangria.' Fans and several famous pals then flocked to the comments section to compliment the star. One fan wrote: 'Glowing (love heart eyes emoji)'; 'Look at you (flame emojis)❤️,'; 'Unreal ❤️.' Meanwhile, former Coronation Street star Helen Flanagan, 34, and TOWIE star Georgia Kousoulou, 34, commented several love heart eyes emojis. The sizzling bikini-clad snap comes after Andy, 36, and Billi reportedly sold their sprawling mansion for a huge seven-figure sum, seven months after filing for divorce. The ex-Liverpool striker and his former TOWIE star ex Billi were together for 11 years but confirmed their split last September after secretly separating earlier in the year. Billi and Andy got engaged in 2014 before marrying in 2022 and share three children, but they put their six-bed family home up for sale in November following their split. Their shared house, which used to belong to Rod Stewart, cost the couple £4.1million in 2019; however, it was thought to be worth closer to £8.5million last year. And now, The Sun has revealed that Andy has accepted a seven-figure offer on the home. The 18th-century property in Epping boasts 25 acres of land, a football pitch and a lake. Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Andy and Billi for comment. Fans and several famous pals then flocked to the comment section to compliment the star Weeks after their split, Andy and celebrity hairstylist Lou Teasdale, 42, revealed their relationship, and now he is reportedly set on tying the knot with her. Andy and Lou were holidaying together in Ibiza earlier this year and shared several loved-up snaps from the trip. But tensions between exes Andy and Billi were reportedly set to explode over his sun-soaked holiday with his new girlfriend. According to The Sun, it did not go down well with Billi's closest friends, who were furious with how her ex was behaving while she was at home with their children. A source said: 'Everyone thinks Andy is acting like an utter p***k and is making himself look like a total fool posting so many sexy shots with Lou, who he moved on with alarmingly quickly after separating from the mother of his kids. 'While he is off gallivanting around the party island, posting all these snaps that scream "we are having hot sex!", Billi is at home looking after not only their children, but his two kids from a previous relationship with ex-fiancee Faye Johnstone. 'It's a silent gut-punch to Billie, who is an angel and adores the kids - looking after them and protecting them from this circus is her number one priority.' Andy and Billi have three children together - Arlo, Wolf, and Marvel Mae and she also raises his children Emilie Rose, 15, and Lucas, 14, from his past relationship. Weeks after their split, Andy and celebrity hairstylist Lou Teasdale, 42, revealed their relationship, and now he is reportedly set on tying the knot with her Billi regularly shares photos of all five children on her Instagram, and her pals are said to be furious she's holding down the fort at home while Andy lives it up with Lou. The insider said the situation feels 'disrespectful', but Billie is trying to hold her head high and carry on looking after the kids. Billi's legal team is reportedly working out the details of her divorce from footballer Andy, and sources say she has 'no interest' in dating anyone new for the time being. In 2022, Andy's wedding to Billi was almost called off when he was pictured drunkenly passed out in bed with two women in Dubai on his stag do. Billi forgave him after one of the women insisted that nothing sexual happened. Less than two years after their nuptials, the couple's marriage was over, with Andy confirming they had started divorce proceedings after 'a hard few months for our family'. Despite claims Billi was 'blindsided' by the relationship, friends of hers say that she ' knew Andy had someone' but she just wasn't sure who it was. She found out shortly before the romance was made public. Weeks later, Andy made his relationship with Lou public in October for a Halloween party dressed as Taylor Swift and her boyfriend Travis Kelce.

'Kim Kardashian's £52 face wrap feeds into a dangerous obsession with facial perfection'

SKIMS has launched a brand new product that claims to help sculpt your face and help you wake up with a 'seriously sharp and contoured face' - but critics question whether it's taking beauty standards one step too far Kim Kardashian's SKIMS brand has never held back when it comes to unconventional standards of fashion lines - but the latest launch has left people divided. From bras with fake nipples on show to micro bikinis that would struggle to even cover a Dorito, it's a brand that always gets people talking. ‌ Renowned for their ultimate body shapewear, promising sleek silhouettes and serious tummy control knickers, the $3billion (£2.2bn) SKIMS empire has just released Seamless Sculpt Face Wrap designed to give you a snatched and sharp jawline, reduce puffiness and improve facial definition - apparently. ‌ Amid the launch, Mirror writer Danielle Kate Wroe called for the product to be "stopped". The shapewear, inspired by lymphatic drainage massages comes in two colours and tightly wraps around your face and neck and fastened with a Velcro strap. It's designed to be worn to bed, in the hope you wake up with a seriously sculpted face - but does it work? ‌ According to Kim, it's an "absolute necessity", as the contraption is infused with collagen yarns and the new launch, in true SKIMS style, has already sold out after only launching on July 29. Costing a staggering £52, shoppers are hoping to copy Kim's ultra-sculpted face shape. With many calling for women to just "sleep in peace", they aren't convinced this product is a good idea - including renowned skincare guru and expert Caroline Hirons, was seen chiming in on the Skims Instagram comments, asking: "Is it April Fools?" ‌ Another Instagram user wrote: "Guys, there's straight up no science to back this. Believe me, I've looked (I've always had a double chin) Save your money." While others are comparing it to Hannibal Lecter as well as The Handmaids Tale and slamming the "disturbing" product to pressuring women to conform to these beauty standards. For more stories like this subscribe to our weekly newsletter, The Weekly Gulp, for a curated roundup of trending stories, poignant interviews, and viral lifestyle picks from The Mirror's Audience U35 team delivered straight to your inbox. ‌ One of the unique selling points of the product is the collagen yarn, and according to Olga Skydan, dermatologist and member of the Medical Expert Board at the face yoga app Luvly, the term sounds scientific, but it's "largely a marketing ploy". She told The Mirror: "Collagen yarn refers to textile fibres infused with collagen peptides derived from fish or bovine sources. In some garments, these are used for moisturizing or skin-conditioning benefits. But the thing is, collagen molecules are far too large to penetrate intact through the skin barrier, and certainly too large to do so via a garment." She highlighted that it can't help promise a snatched face and compared it to a Gua Sha. She said: "Gua sha, at least, is based on traditional massage techniques that stimulate lymphatic drainage and blood flow. On the other hand, the SKIMS face wrap does something similar, but in a compressive way. It can temporarily reduce puffiness, just as sleeping in an upright position can. But make no mistake, there's no rejuvenation happening here." ‌ The expert also notes concern over the wording used for the product. The product is called 'Seamless Sculpt" and Olga said 'sculpted,' and other similar adjectives, "feeds into an already dangerous obsession with facial perfection and symmetry among women" and added: "The implication is that natural softness or aging is something to be concealed or fixed. And the fact that the solution is marketed as something you can wear at home while multitasking suggests that we should always be optimizing ourselves, even during rest." here are a lot of effective, non-invasive options out there, according to the expert. For example, professional-grade radiofrequency and ultrasound can stimulate collagen and elastin and at-home products such as retinoids and peptides can help improve skin density over time. ‌ As well as lifestyle habits like a consistent use of SPF, a protein-rich diet, adequate hydration, and quality sleep still form the foundation of skin health. THE FANTASTIC FASHION DESIGN COMPETITION RETURNS FOR SECOND SERIES THIS AUTUMN ON ITV Returning by popular demand to ITV1 and ITVX this Autumn, the fashion series – which was watched by eight million last year – is back for another stylish season Nine contestants compete over five 60-minute episodes to secure an exclusive mentorship with the UK's favourite fashion retailer - M&S, as well as have their winning design sold at M&S Marks & Spencer and ITV have announced the return of M&S: Dress The Nation, hosted by two of the UK's favourite TV presenters, AJ Odudu and Vernon Kay. Returning to ITV1 and ITVX this Autumn, the fashion forward series – which was watched by eight million people last year – is back by popular demand, meaning fashion-lovers across the nation can tune in once again to find out what it takes to design stylish clothes for M&S. The nationwide style search continues this season, as M&S looks for the UK's very best emerging fashion designers. The new series focusses on womenswear and menswear, and documents the search process over the course of five 60-minute episodes, welcoming contestants from up and down the nation. Nine candidates, ranging from ages 22 to 59, will compete to secure an exclusive mentorship with M&S where they will work with some of the best in the industry across Design, Buying, Merchandising and Marketing. In addition, the talented winner will also have the exciting opportunity to see their design sold exclusively in selected M&S stores and online for the AW25 season. The design challenge format was launched by M&S CEO, Stuart Machin, inspired by his love of fashion and passion for supporting people looking to start a career in retail no matter what their life experience or background. The series, created in partnership with ITV and South Shore productions, has once again opened the competition to individuals from all walks of life - formal qualification or training in fashion design is not essential. Instead, the nationwide talent search favours creative flair, a willingness to learn and a true passion for design. Throughout the process, the candidates will work individually, as well as in groups, to design and create garments that will be loved by the M&S customer where style, versatility and quality are key. Maddy Evans, Head of M&S Woman and Mitch Hughes, Menswear Director return to the judging panel as they cast their expert eye over the designs, where they will also be joined by a host of M&S ambassadors and celebrity judges, as well as some of the UK's leading fashion designers. Stuart Machin, CEO of Marks & Spencer said: 'At M&S we've spent the last three years improving our womenswear and menswear to be more stylish, even better quality and great value. To do this, we have attracted some of the best fashion talent in the UK to join our team, as well as developing our own brilliant in-house talent. With Dress The Nation, I wanted to show what our M&S designers look for and what it takes to create desirable fashion, with the aim of inspiring more would-be designers to consider a career in this wonderful world of fashion, no matter what their background or formal qualifications.' David Olaniyi won the series last year and has been working in the Menswear Design team at M&S since October. He said: 'Winning Dress The Nation last year changed my life. I've always been passionate about designing clothing for the modern man, but being part of the Menswear team has been a massive eye opener into how the retail industry operates on a day-to-day basis. From speaking with suppliers to working closely with the merchandising and buying teams, the experience has helped me nurture my craft and opened up a realm of possibilities for the future. I can't wait to see how the contestants get on this year.' AJ Odudu said: 'Dress The Nation has heart, hustle, and enough fashion drama to keep you glued to the telly. It's real people with proper talent, bringing their A-game. Last year's winner was outrageously talented; proof that this show uncovers the kind of raw, brilliant creativity you don't see every day. I'm chuffed to bits to be hosting for a second year running and proud to front something that champions fresh opportunities in fashion, a world that's notoriously tough to break into.' Vernon Kay said: 'Dress The Nation isn't just about fashion — it's about changing someone's life forever whilst discovering more of their own confidence, creativity and talent. The level of skill this year is unreal which means the competition is ridiculously tough but seeing people shine doing what they love makes for proper feel-good telly.' Katie Rawcliffe, Director of Entertainment & Daytime ITV said: 'We're so excited to bring Dress The Nation back to ITV1 and ITVX for a second series. A series which celebrates real people with real talent. At its core, it's about creativity and opportunity, opening up the fashion world to new voices and perspectives. Viewers really connected with that last year, and this new series promises to be even bigger, bolder and more inspiring.' Bhavit Chandrani, Director of BE Studio at ITV, said: 'I'm delighted that Dress The Nation is returning for another series. The programme shows the power of commercial collaboration through BE Studio, delivering Ad Funded Entertainment that resonates with ITV viewers and offers a unique way for M&S to connect with its audience.'
