'Kim Kardashian's £52 face wrap feeds into a dangerous obsession with facial perfection'

Daily Mirror21 hours ago
SKIMS has launched a brand new product that claims to help sculpt your face and help you wake up with a 'seriously sharp and contoured face' - but critics question whether it's taking beauty standards one step too far
Kim Kardashian's SKIMS brand has never held back when it comes to unconventional standards of fashion lines - but the latest launch has left people divided. From bras with fake nipples on show to micro bikinis that would struggle to even cover a Dorito, it's a brand that always gets people talking.

Renowned for their ultimate body shapewear, promising sleek silhouettes and serious tummy control knickers, the $3billion (£2.2bn) SKIMS empire has just released Seamless Sculpt Face Wrap designed to give you a snatched and sharp jawline, reduce puffiness and improve facial definition - apparently.

Amid the launch, Mirror writer Danielle Kate Wroe called for the product to be "stopped". The shapewear, inspired by lymphatic drainage massages comes in two colours and tightly wraps around your face and neck and fastened with a Velcro strap. It's designed to be worn to bed, in the hope you wake up with a seriously sculpted face - but does it work?

According to Kim, it's an "absolute necessity", as the contraption is infused with collagen yarns and the new launch, in true SKIMS style, has already sold out after only launching on July 29. Costing a staggering £52, shoppers are hoping to copy Kim's ultra-sculpted face shape.
With many calling for women to just "sleep in peace", they aren't convinced this product is a good idea - including renowned skincare guru and expert Caroline Hirons, was seen chiming in on the Skims Instagram comments, asking: "Is it April Fools?"

Another Instagram user wrote: "Guys, there's straight up no science to back this. Believe me, I've looked (I've always had a double chin) Save your money." While others are comparing it to Hannibal Lecter as well as The Handmaids Tale and slamming the "disturbing" product to pressuring women to conform to these beauty standards.

One of the unique selling points of the product is the collagen yarn, and according to Olga Skydan, dermatologist and member of the Medical Expert Board at the face yoga app Luvly, the term sounds scientific, but it's "largely a marketing ploy".
She told The Mirror: "Collagen yarn refers to textile fibres infused with collagen peptides derived from fish or bovine sources. In some garments, these are used for moisturizing or skin-conditioning benefits. But the thing is, collagen molecules are far too large to penetrate intact through the skin barrier, and certainly too large to do so via a garment."
She highlighted that it can't help promise a snatched face and compared it to a Gua Sha. She said: "Gua sha, at least, is based on traditional massage techniques that stimulate lymphatic drainage and blood flow. On the other hand, the SKIMS face wrap does something similar, but in a compressive way. It can temporarily reduce puffiness, just as sleeping in an upright position can. But make no mistake, there's no rejuvenation happening here."

The expert also notes concern over the wording used for the product. The product is called 'Seamless Sculpt" and Olga said 'sculpted,' and other similar adjectives, "feeds into an already dangerous obsession with facial perfection and symmetry among women" and added: "The implication is that natural softness or aging is something to be concealed or fixed. And the fact that the solution is marketed as something you can wear at home while multitasking suggests that we should always be optimizing ourselves, even during rest."
here are a lot of effective, non-invasive options out there, according to the expert. For example, professional-grade radiofrequency and ultrasound can stimulate collagen and elastin and at-home products such as retinoids and peptides can help improve skin density over time.

As well as lifestyle habits like a consistent use of SPF, a protein-rich diet, adequate hydration, and quality sleep still form the foundation of skin health.

Ore Oduba reveals he's ‘coming out as truest version of me' but ‘isn't gay in the sexual sense' in tribute to sister

The Strictly star, 39, said he had received messages asking him about the new rainbow emoji in his updated Instagram bio. The TV presenter wrote: "Lots of people have been asking about the rainbow in my bio.. some will say I don't need to explain myself (and they'd be right) however in this case I'm happy to share my why. It's maybe not why you think. "I've mentioned before about the longer you can withstanding a storm the closer you are to your rainbow. "I'm so glad to have grown monumentally through a truly difficult, stormy period in my life.. the colours of my rainbow look very bright today." Ore went on to explain that the rainbow has a special link to his late sister Lola, who was openly queer and non-binary. "But in losing my sister in April the symbol of a rainbow has brought me closer to them in the times I've needed it desperately," Ore continued. "My sister was very proudly black and very proudly queer. Definitely an ICON to me and so many of their friends and family. In the last year of their life they identified as non-binary. My pride for them knows no bounds. "Despite doing a whole lot of living in their latter years, my sister spent much of their life in shame and humiliation of who they were. "In so many ways, my sister's death gave ME a gift of life. "Having realised I'd lived the majority of my life for the attention of others, often suppressing my authentic self, my sister gave me the wake up call to live my life fully and express myself wholeheartedly. Ore Oduba and Portia Announce Separation After Nine Years "And that is what I plan to do. "It's certainly the version of me I want to mirror for my children." The TV personality explained that he was ready to stop "hiding" and "second guessing" in fear of how he would be perceived. Ore went on: "So am I gay, as someone keenly asked me on Instagram yesterday. No, not in the traditional or sexual sense. "But if 'coming out' is about shedding a former self to put forward the new, truest version of me, without the shame, the hiding, without the second-guessing whether any decision will make me happy rather than how others perceive me, how I cheerlead others with kindness and compassion, with occasionally quiet, or loud, flamboyance, depending on the mood, and a big dollop of camp then HALLELUJAH count me in!" He ended with a sweet tribute to his sister for teaching him how to live his authentic self without judgement. "My sister taught me so much about the queer community," Ore added. "About how feeling like the outsider, of difference of feeling othered and misunderstood, it was the one place they truly felt belonging. "I understand that now. "I miss you so much Lola but how lucky I am to feel you with me, guiding me every day. "I will always keep your rainbow flag flying in my heart. I love you," followed by the rainbow emoji. Ore's post was flooded by positive comments including ITV's Rob Rinber, who wrote: "This is how true allyship sounds." Alison Hammond posted: "Lola RIP. Fly that flag Ore." Ore's fellow TV pals Lisa Snowdon, Helen Skelton and Angellica Bell all posted red love hearts in the comment section. Earlier this month, Ore appeared on This Morning as he revealed he fell victim to a cruel scam. He then opened up about the loss of his sister, revealing how the scam occurred shortly after. The scammer pretended to be US author Mel Robbins - of whom Ore is a fan. "Our family has been through a lot, recently. And, even at the point where I got a second email inviting me to be on Mel Robbins' podcast, it was on the day that we were going to plant a tree in honour of my sister. We lost my sister three months ago; they took their life," he shared. Ore continued: "We were grieving, and it felt like a sign. It felt like exactly the point that Mel should come into my life and offer this incredible opportunity." In October, Ore announced that he had split from his wife Portia after nine years. He revealed the couple, who share two children, had decided to end things earlier last year. Ore, who won Strictly in 2016, wrote: 'Hi guys. Portia and I are said to announce that we separated earlier this year. 'We're so grateful for all the love you've shared with us both over the years. 'And we want to thank you in advance for respecting our privacy as we navigated this difficult transition. 'We will be making no further comment. Be kind, always.' In early 2018 Ore revealed Portia had given birth to a baby boy on January 9. The couple named their son Roman. The couple's second child, daughter Genie, was born in 2021. Strictly curse The Newsfound presenter won Strictly alongside Joanne Clifton in 2016 and famously said the experience helped his married to Portia - and the Strictly cuurse was not an issue. He said: "For us, it brought us closer together but it's not easy for some people. It's a bubble. If people dear to you are not there, factions can occur." In another interview, he told The Sun: "The show is so 24/7 and I didn't want Portia to feel like an outsider. The three of us went out for dinner and bowling together. I won. "But Portia and Jo got on so brilliantly, I was the third wheel! If anything, the curse has stolen my wife because I feel left out when we all hang out together. "I really couldn't have been more fortunate than to get two brilliant blonde bombshells in my life." 6 Ore paid tribute to his late sister Lola who died in April Credit: Getty 6 Ore announced that he had split from his wife Portia after nine years in October Credit: Alamy

How being Markled over race row sparked Jessica Mulroney's spiral, insiders claim… as Meg's ex-BFF ‘splits from husband'

Insiders tell The Sun the toll of the fall-out ultimately proved 'too much' for the high society couple MUL IT'S OVER How being Markled over race row sparked Jessica Mulroney's spiral, insiders claim… as Meg's ex-BFF 'splits from husband' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MAYBE think twice before making friends with Meghan Markle. Just ask her former best pal Jessica Mulroney, who's been on a downward spiral both personally and professionally ever since being unceremoniously dumped by the duchess five years ago. 14 Meghan Markle with former BFF Jessica Mulroney and her then husband, Ben Mulroney, in happier times in 2016 Credit: Getty - Contributor 14 The longstanding couple - who share three children - have now reportedly split Credit: Instagram / @jessicamulroney 14 Jessica's marriage split comes five years after she was publicly dumped by ex-BFF Meghan - with sources claiming the upset it generated causing cracks in her marriage Credit: Getty It's certainly been a challenging five years since that very public dumping - which came following Jessica's PR crisis in 2020. At the time, she lost her best friend and a string of high-profile gigs in the aftermath. But now it's been claimed her relationship with husband Ben Mulroney, with whom she shares three children, also suffered. This week, following much speculation, it was reported that their 16-year marriage is over. And according to insiders, Meghan's decision to "cut off" her friend may well have contributed to its demise. Speaking about the split - first rumoured last month after Jessica attended a wedding at the Ritz-Carlton in Toronto alone - an insider tells The Sun: "It didn't help that Meghan effectively 'ghosted' Jessica after 2020, basically cutting her off entirely. "Jessica played coy about the end of their friendship for a bit, but at a certain time, she started teasing [that things were over]." The insider adds that the stress and upset had knock-on effects on her personal life. "Jessica's been open about her anxiety over the years," we're told. "Ben tried to be supportive, but the toll of everything was possibly too much." Having been friends for years, the proverbial hit the fan for Jessica and Meghan in 2020, after Jessica was embroiled in a headline-grabbing race row with lifestyle blogger Sasha Exeter during the height of the Black Lives Matter movement. According to Sasha, Jessica showed 'textbook white privilege' and refused to amplify black voices after she'd reached out to her online asking for support. Meghan Markle's best pal Jessica Mulroney threatens lawsuit despite publicly apologising after being accused of 'white privilege' in brutal Instagram post 14 Lifestyle blogger Sasha spoke out about Jessica's treatment towards her and accused her of 'white privilege' Credit: Instagram Jessica hit back, allegedly threatening to have her blacklisted from all major brands if she didn't leave her alone. Sasha said: 'I'm by no means calling Jess a racist, but what I will say is this: she is very well aware of her wealth, perceived power and privilege because of the colour of her skin and that, my friends, gave her the momentary confidence to come for my livelihood in writing.' Things went from bad to worse when Sasha leaked messages that Jessica had sent to her by way of apology, which seemingly implicated Meghan - a vocal supporter of amplifying black voices, who has spoken out about her own experiences of racism. In one message, Jessica wrote: 'As I told you privately, I have lived a very public and personal experience with my closest friend where race was front and centre. It was deeply educational. I learned a lot from that. 'I promise to continue to learn and listen on how I can use my privilege to elevate and support black voices.' Jessica's been open about her anxiety over the years... Ben tried to be supportive, but the toll of everything was possibly too much Insider Despite her best intentions, Jessica was promptly dropped from the Sussex sisterhood. Sources at the time claimed Meghan already felt Jessica was trying to "make a career out of the friendship", and when she embroiled her in this PR crisis, it was the final straw. One insider told Page Six in 2020: "The white privilege row has really given Meghan the excuse she was waiting for to cut Jess off for good. "I don't know what the tipping point was, but Jess has been on the out for some time." 'Cracks started to show' 14 Jessica and Meghan became firm friends when Meghan relocated to Jessica's home city, Toronto, to film the TV series Suits 14 Jessica was a key player at Harry and Meghan's wedding in 2018, and her daughter, Ivy, was a bridesmaid alongside Princess Charlotte Credit: AFP 14 The former besties seemed to have an unbreakable bond until Jessica's fall from grace in 2020 Credit: Instagram/jessicamulroney As Meghan distanced herself from her best friend, things went from bad to worse for Jessica. She was dropped by Good Morning America and Canadian TV network CTV, where she hosted wedding-themed reality TV series I Do, Redo, as well as department store Hudson's Bay, where she worked as their fashion and bridal specialist. A source told us: "Jessica never really seemed to recover from that incident, losing all of her gigs around that time, including her GMA job." Ben also left his long-running job as host of E! around the same time. While the couple stayed committed to each other at the time, cracks "started to show". An insider claimed: "They presented a united front. It was them against the world, and they were so angry for a while that the anger possibly fuelled them. "But in many ways, the incident also exposed cracks in their marriage." Five years later those cracks seem to have splintered beyond repair. And while Jessica now finds herself without her husband and best friend, Ben's reportedly moved on with a new girlfriend. Insiders believe her sad state of affairs won't change anything when it comes to her relationship with Meghan. 14 The pair were last pictured together in 2020 Credit: Instagram/jessicamulroney The women first became friends back in 2011 - when a pre-royal Meghan was still living her former life as a TV actress on the Toronto-based series Suits. They bonded quickly, and it was claimed Jessica was instrumental in helping to ingratiate Meghan into the upper echelons of Canada's high society. While Jessica knew and styled many figures - including former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's then wife Sophie Grégoire - Ben was also extremely well-connected. His politician father elevated his position in society, while his TV work - presenting shows including Canadian Idol and Your Morning - made him one of the city's most prominent figures. We're told: 'Jessica and Ben helped facilitate Meghan's entry into Canadian social circles, and helped to vouch for her. 'Furthermore, during those mad early years when she started dating Prince Harry and she was still living in the city, they helped to shroud them in Toronto, even hosting them at their home.' When Harry proposed, Jessica was one of the first people Meghan called. Jessica and Ben helped facilitate Meghan's entry into Canadian social circles Anonymous insider She went on to play a key role at the royal wedding, unofficially assuming duties as maid of honour and helping Meghan choose her dress. Her daughter Ivy, then four, also walked alongside royal children - including Princess Charlotte - as bridesmaid, while her then seven-year-old sons, Brian and John, acted as pageboys. Just months later the family accompanied Harry and Meghan on their royal tour of Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga. And, of course, Jessica was there - front and centre - for Meghan's star-studded baby shower in New York in 2019. But ever since her PR crisis, she's been royally 'Markled' - that is, dumped by the duchess. And she's not the first person who Meghan has seemingly dropped when it suits her. 14 Harry and Meghan ensured their 2018 wedding was the biggest A-list event of the year Credit: Getty 14 They welcomed George and Amal Clooney as wedding guests Credit: Getty 14 David and Victoria Beckham were also in attendance - but the famous couples are since rumoured to have fallen out Credit: Getty - Contributor Just cast your minds back to 2018, when she welcomed a slew of Hollywood glitterati to Windsor for her and Harry's nuptials. All those in attendance - including Oprah Winfrey, Priyanka Chopra, Serena Williams, George and Amal Clooney, and David and Victoria Beckham - attested to the celebrity status that the Sussex power couple had cultivated. Since then however, their friendships - for the large part - have proven to be all smoke and mirrors, as Meghan and Harry have been accused of being as impetuous in their social lives as they are in their ever changing careers. Alliances that appear to have fallen by the wayside include friendships with the Beckhams, the Clooneys and Tyler Perry. And that's before you take into account their family estrangements. Not only have they burned bridges with the Royal Family, after consistently lashing out at them since moving to the US post-Megxit, they've also made it clear they want nothing to do with Meghan's paternal side of the family. Granted, Meghan's estranged father Thomas and sister Samantha have been unscrupulous in their public attacks against Meghan - with the latter branding her 'Princess Pushy'. She's long insisted she never had any relationship with Samantha, and only cut her father out of her life after he started exploiting her in the media. But whether they were the first to cast the stone or not, the fact remains: Meghan's family and her in-laws have also been Markled. 14 Meghan hasn't spoken to her father, Thomas Markle, since 2018 Credit: Collect 14 She's also estranged from her half-sister, Samantha Markle, who's labelled her 'Princess Pushy' Credit: MomandPapparazi - Commissioned by The US Sun Digital edition 14 Harry and Meghan - pictured with children Archie, six, and Lilibet, four - have made a habit of making, and losing, friends on their way to the top Credit: Instagram As for Jessica, there's no suggestion that Meghan actively worked to bring down her friend. The fact is, Jessica made a misstep in her interactions with Sasha, and she paid the price with her career, and - latterly it seems - her marriage. Meghan could have stepped in at any point and used her power and influence to bolster her former BFF's public standing - but her silence was deafening. Meanwhile, initially, Jessica did all she could to quieten any rumours of bad blood between them. Shutting down rumours In September 2020 - just a few months after her fallout with Sasha and amid rumours that Meghan had dumped her - she rubbished the speculation. She wrote on her Instagram Stories: 'I'm going to tell this once and for all. Meghan and I are family. 'She is the kindest friend and has checked up on me everyday.' Then, six months later, she posted a photo of flowers she'd received from Meghan for her birthday, writing in the caption: 'LUCKIEST FRIEND XXXX, THX MM.' However, as time ticked on it became clear the two women had become distant - with Meghan seemingly the driving force. In June 2021, Jessica posted cryptically on Instagram: 'Life changes. You lose love. You lose pieces of yourself that you never imagined would be gone.' It can be lonely have the world, friends distance from you Jessica Mulroney Later that year she wrote online: 'It can be lonely having the world, friends distance from you and not even ask how you are. But, thankfully, you find the things that truly matter…' Still, Meghan didn't make a move - and Jessica seemed to get the message. In 2022, she shared a picture of a sign that said: 'You are not too sensitive. You are not overreacting. If it hurts you it hurts you.' She wrote beneath it: 'I wish I had seen this a long time ago. I hope it makes a difference in your day too.' Despite being so instrumental in the Sussexes' lives for a period, Jessica was glaringly absent from Harry's 2023 memoir Spare, and did not appear on Meghan's Netflix lifestyle series With Love, Meghan - which saw the latter invite her closest friends to cook alongside her. In fact, the former best friends haven't been pictured together for five years. Now as Jessica deals with the alleged demise of her 16-year marriage and all the uncertainty that comes with that, one bitter thing seems certain - she won't be getting support from her former ride or die.

Coronation Street favourite Sally Ann Matthews confirms Jenny Connor exit

A Coronation Street star has announced their departure from the ITV soap in a post, leaving fans "gutted". Jenny Connor actress Sally Ann Matthews appeared to confirm she was leaving the role after 10 years. After fans had speculated over the exit following another character leaving the show earlier this year, the actress took to Instagram on Friday to announce her big news. It comes amid a new storyline being teased for the character just this week, with a potential new love interest. Jenny is set to show an interest in another Weatherfield resident, but it seems this will not last. While Jenny has been a Weatherfield regular for the past decade, she actually debuted on the soap years earlier. Actress Sally took on the role back in 1986 and appeared until 1991, with another appearance in 1993. But now the time has come for Jenny and actress Sally to move on, and taking to social media the star broke her silence. Stating she was ready for new roles, Sally did not specify the details about her departing the role or her character's exit storyline. She said: "I was supposed to stay for five months but ended up doing an extra ten years because I loved it so much! It's time though to play those parts I always hoped I would when I'd 'grown up.' Thanks Trafford Wharf Rd for the memories and endless laughter x." Viewers have been left gutted by the news, sharing their reactions both on X and under Sally's Instagram post on Friday. One fan called it "the worst news" as another said: "Are you as heartbroken as me???" A third viewer shared: "Oh my god no…?! Jenny Connor what am I to do without you on the cobbles?!" A fourth added: "Very sad," as others replied to Sally, sharing they were "gutted".
